free will is a philosophical concept arising from
the fundamental difference between subject and
object, from ourselves and the world around us.
it is the difference between two things that are
simply different. one is self the other is
other.
free will is, therefore, the product of the
contradiction between subject and object, and is
the manifestation of the reflexion of this
relationship in on the subject by itself.

or, we could look at it from a psychoanalytic
perspective and find that what we're really
talking about is the question of the relationship
between the ego and the self. the ego =
consciousness, which has free will. it is,
however, determined by it's relationship to the
self (=the sub-total of our existence), or, to
put it another way, by the relationship of the
persona to the shadow, that is; of unrepressed
personality traits to repressed ones. the fact
that these contradictory forces and constantly
shifting in equilibria is, in a way, reflected in
the fact that we have free will.
