ANDY VELLA (parched art) about the cover of The Top:
At the time they were creating The Top, I just had learned how to make wood engraving. In my flat there were terrific tiles on the floor. And one night I torn up the whole kitchen floor and engraved the pictures and symboles into the back of those tiles. For the lyrics on the insert card I carved some wood, dipped into ink and wrote with this. You don't see it on the printing but it was very important for the feeling.

an anomaly, it just sticks out on it's own. I don't know what was going on. It's fucking deranged.

The Cure after adding some sax to the album which appeared to revel in Smith's identity crisis. Trying to account for The Top is like trying to account for somebody's dreams, I wrote at the time. You add up all the reactions and reasons and there's still something missing.

I need other people around. On the Top, it was just Lol and Andy and I played everything except drums and it was the worst record we've ever made. There was no input or criticism of anything.
