Goo Goo Dolls to slide into Saginaw

By Josh Grosteffon
03/04/2007

Robby Takac, bassist and vocalist for the Goo Goo Dolls, was there when the Superdome opened after Hurricane Katrina – and it wasn’t pretty.
But despite the devastation, Takac said he never felt more welcome and thanked by a crowd for doing what he does.
"I’ve never finished doing something and really felt from someone’s heart ‘thank you from being there," he said via phone last week about the post-Katrina concert. "That day for those people was that one day they could just forget about everything, it was insane."
Takac and the rest of the Dolls will be in Saginaw on March 11 at the The Dow Event Center, promoting their newest album "Let Love In."
The center will be much different from the bare stage in Lousiana. Fans watched them play in the dome’s parking lot, as well as the game on large projector screens. But when it came time for U2 and Green Day to play at halftime, it got crazier, he said.
"We knew it was going to be a spectacle," Takac said. "They just opened those gates and let 40,000 people in there for free, free!"
The experience was rewarding for Takac and unique in the band’s 20 years.
"Every day I’m amazing that we’re still holding it together, but nothing comes without working at it," he said. "Life is always chaos, but at the same time we always seem to hit the end of it and say ‘holy cow, we just achieved a lot."
These achievements include having the most top ten hits of any band on the hot adult contemporary chart (12) and the amazing success of their singles, especially the song "Iris" from the film "City of Angels."
Their new album marked a return to their geographic roots in Buffalo and represents a somewhat lighter tone than their last studio work. A six-month frozen writing session in a rented Masonic temple provided a different feel from the buzz of the west coast.
"John (Johnny Rzeznik, vocals and guitar) writes from this weird place. Unless he’s completed freaked out by what he’s writing, he doesn’t feel good about it," Takac said. "I think he was kind of able to free himself up on this record and talk about a lot of things that he wanted to talk about it."
Soon, the band will release a DVD to compliment the album. It will feature some fresh live recordings of the band trying out their new songs without much experience with them on-stage.
"It’s a little bit different of an experience than a live DVD," Takac said. "It’s cool to watch us holding these songs with kid gloves. Now we muscle ‘em, they’re ours. I’ve played them 300 times at least."
And for fans who want to show their appreciation at the concert, think candy.
"I’m a sugar freak. I was hooked on suckers for a while," Takac said. A fan noticed his habit of chomping on candy while playing and tossed a Pez dispenser on stage. The trend caught on and now he gets dispensers from fans frequently.

**I liked this article. It didn't seem to have the same recycled facts as so many do. I'm sure I'm going to be kicking myself for not buying tickets to this show.**

I wish I would've too, but it's too far for me to travel right now. I would've loved to go!
