"I Turned Down The Spice Girls" The Man Himself: Sean Goldsmith
by Sean Goldsmith

"On the bottom rung of the showbiz ladder"

Sean Who?
I'm Sean Goldsmith and I work as a Radio Presenter (that's DJ) at Trent FM in Nottingham and Mercia FM in Conventry, England.

(For guests not au fait with 'Girl Power')
Who are the Spice Girls?
They're probably the biggest pop act in the UK and Europe at the moment. They're coming to America, and if you haven't heard of them, you will. Soon.

What's 'Girl Power'?
It's the Spice Girls idiology. The Spice Girls claim that former British Prime Minister Margaret (now Lady) Thatcher had 'Girl Power'. Ziz-a-zig-ar.

Zig-a-zig-Whaaaaat?
Don't ask.

If the Spice Girls are so popular why did you turn them down?
They weren't famous at the time. Like the chap who turned down the Beatles, I get to interview many artistes, and ever-so occasionally I make a mistake.

What was the set-up?
I interviewed the then unknown Spice Girls in June 1996. I was in the Trent FM studios in Nottingham, and I was able to talk to the Spice Girls in Coventry via an ISDN link.

What was the content of the interview?
They spent most of the interview flirting with me.

Did you flirt with them?

What happened immediately after the interview?
The link back to Nottingham was still live at the end of the interview, and the Girls didn't realise that I could hear them, but they couldn't hear me.

What did they say?
They had a discussion to the effect of: "Ooh, he has a really great voice, I wonder if he's good-looking?"

Have you rejected any other major artistes?
Yes. Peter Andre.

What was even worse...
(Comment by the Webmaster) Sean taped the Spice Girls interview on DAT but has since lost or erased the tape! Yes, it's true!

Coo-el Email Addresses:
You can send an email to me, Sean Goldsmith.
Mark Pugh. Ah yes, Pugh fixes my computer (for free) and does a bit of presenting on Trent FM. He also wrote this page for me.

Special note to the Spice Girls from Mark Pugh:
I'd like to state here, now, for the record that the photograph of Sean Goldsmith at the top of the page really doesn't do him justice (he doesn't normally look that vacant... most of the time).
