Pumpkins Plan Mega-Freebie

Word is that the Smashing Pumpkins hope to celebrate the release of their new album Adore with a free concert in Chicago's Grant Park sometime near the Fourth of July holiday. A source who's involved in planning the concert -- which would feature Cheap Trick as the opening act -- stressed that talks are in the preliminary stages and that there are many hurdles to be cleared, but plans are nevertheless progressing. The band has also announced that it will play unconventional shows in other cities, including a block festival in Minneapolis. They could easily sell out several nights at Chicago's New World Music Theatre, and a free gig on the lakefront would likely be the biggest rock show ever held in Grant Park. Adore, meanwhile, arrives in stores on June 2.
