Joey Pays Tribute To Death Angel
Death Angel's official web site has been updated with a photo of Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison at the age of 16 sporting a Death Angel t-shirt and standing behind a drum kit ready to pound away on the skins. An accompanying message from Jordison reads as follows: "This is a picture is from from my 1991 yearbook wearing a Death Angel 'The Ultra-Violence' shirt. Me and my friends were all heavily influenced by the band and played covers in our garage of Death Angel classics such as 'Mistress of Pain', 'Bored' and 'Seemingly Endless Time'. It's almost 15 years later and I am still a fan of the band. The new record, 'The Art of Dying', is a must for any fan of old-school upbeat thrash. Here's to one of the best Bay Area bands EVER! Man, my hair sucked."

Scabbia Clears The Air on Jim
Lacuna Coil's 33-year-old frontwoman Cristina Scabbia has confirmed to the Des Moines Register that she is in a relationship with an Iowan, guitarist Jim Root of Slipknot. The couple met, appropriately enough, on a previous Ozzfest.

Because of Root, tonight's (April 13) Lacuna Coil concert with Rob Zombie at the sold-out Val Air won't be Scabbia's inaugural visit to Des Moines. And she already considers herself a fan of Iowa's capital city.

"I like the fact that it's really quiet," Scabbia said of Des Moines. "I've found really friendly people.

"But I have to be honest with you. When I was back in Milan, I just checked the web site and I found it pretty stupid that there are more pigs than persons, so I had a completely distorted idea of Des Moines."

Regarding Slipknot, Scabbia said, "It's definitely a band I respect because they have their own trademark. ... Even if you don't like the music, they're a punch in your face. ... They're an army when they're on stage."

On Milan, Italy, her hometown, Cristina said, "If we are talking about art, if we are talking about fashion, it's the fashion capital. It's a wonderful city if we're talking about events. ... But it's really smoggy. It's really industrial. It's a kind of town where people are so much into work. ... I don't want to say they're not friendly. It (is) more so they're really concentrating on the job. They're not really chilled out, but it's a beautiful town."

On being hailed as one of the "hottest chicks in metal": "I'm not a model, I'm not super tall, I don't have huge (breasts), I'm not super skinny, I'm not the usual model cliché. You can be sensual, and you can be unique even if you're not, like, perfect. I don't consider fake (breasts) perfections."

Slipknot Pays Tribute
According to The Des Moines Register, Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor will return to the House of Bricks in Des Moines, Iowa on January 21 for another unusual show when he performs with Josh Brainard (On A Pale Horse, ex-Slipknot) as part of Auspicious P, a tribute to Jack Black's comedy duo Tenacious D. Facecage, On A Pale Horse and Knucklebone are also on the bill.

Taylor performed with cover band Dum Fux as part of his annual New Year's Eve at the House of Bricks. The group was made up of Taylor, guitarist Denny Harvey, bassist Steve McGuire and drummer Joey Corigliano. They perform just one show of punk and metal covers a year. In addition to Taylor, members of Odium, Only, Facecage and On A Pale Horse handle vocals on some songs.

"We first got together about 10 years ago and played a garage party," Corigliano told The Des Moines Register. "Seven years later we played our second show. Corey and Denny brought it back just to get together for fun and jam with friends."

Stone Sour, which features Taylor and Slipknot guitarist Jim Root, are writing and rehearsing new material at home in Iowa and will begin recording their second album on January 25.

Root recently told Launch that the band will work at Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl's studio in Los Angeles.

Stone Sour's new album will follow up the group's 2002 self-titled debut, which went gold and featured the hit single, "Bother".

Slipknot 9.0 Live Certified Gold
Slipknot's first full-length concert album, "9.0 Live", has been certified gold by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for shipments in excess of 500,000 copies. The CD, which was recorded at shows in Singapore, Japan, and Las Vegas, has sold 163,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

As previously reported, Slipknot have been nominated for a Grammy for the sixth consecutive year. The single "Before I Forget" from the band's third album, "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)", was nominated for Best Metal Performance alongside songs by Ministry, Mudvayne, Rammstein and Shadows Fall - all bands that Slipknot have toured with.

Slipknot have yet to take home a Grammy trophy, having competed in previous years with such heavy-hitters as Metallica.

The 48th Grammys will be awarded in a telecast Feb. 8 on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Corey Kicks The Bottle
ContactMusic.com is reporting that Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor credits his wife Scarlett for making him realise he had to stop drinking.

Taylor, who was a cocaine addict and homeless at the age of 15, only decided to quit alcohol when his spouse made him take a look at himself in the mirror. He says, "I was an alcoholic. It was really bad by the time we were recording 'Subliminal Verses'. I was out of control, hiding Jack Daniel's (whiskey) bottles under my pillow. I would drink from the moment I got up until the moment I passed out, wherever that was. I didn't like it and my wife didn't like it, so she basically grabbed me by the hair and said, 'Look at yourself!' I was swollen and fucked up and I didn't realize it. The last night I drank, all I remember is we were at the Viper Room. I was spitting vomit at people walking down Sunset (Boulevard, Los Angeles). I almost got my a*s kicked and wife just left, like, 'Fuck you! I can't take this.'"

Corey says that he cannot bear to remember life as an alcoholic, because is so appalled by his irresponsible behavior towards his baby son. The 32-year-old Slipknot singer, whose life has been blighted by drug and alcohol abuse, is most ashamed of the time he babysat his child Griffin. He says, "I used to be a really fun drunk, but there was a point where it stopped being fun and became a need. The first year of my son's life I was fucking unavailable because I was drunk the whole time. I've never admitted this to anybody, but one night my wife went to see Mudvayne and I got so ripped that I was sitting at home taking care of my son while I was wasted and it didn't bother me at all. That's fucked up."

Mixonline Interview with Slipknot Soundman
Slipknot's front-of-house engineer Dave "Shirt" Nicholls recently spoke to Mix magazine about the group's most recent North American leg of the Subliminal Verses Tour. Taylor, Mich.-based Thunder Audio have been providing the audio rig, which is based around a Meyer Sound MILO line array system (24 high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers and four UPJ-1P compact VariO loudspeakers for occasional frontfill and stage monitor use).

"When we did our first soundcheck with the MILO rig, I have to say I was rather taken aback," says Nicholls. "I brought up the kick drum and, well, there it was — I didn't have to tweak it or add anything; it sounded exactly as it should. And as I brought in the rest of the mix, the same thing happened all the way across the desk. The MILO is just about the smoothest, most accurate and well-defined line array I've ever encountered. In fact, I've been running the mix virtually flat most nights, with no EQ at all."

The tour covered a wide range of venues, from mid-sized halls to large arenas and even the occasional outdoor festival. According to Nicholls, "We haven't even had to use all the cabinets most nights, except in the very largest venues. They're just immensely powerful. I'm running flat out around 103 dB (SPL), and they haven't red-lined even once. My stated goal at this point is just to get the second fan to kick in!" (The second fan on MILO turns on only when the amplifier heatsink temperature exceeds 74 degrees Centigrade–an unusual occurrence.)

Underoath Speaks Out on Slipknot
Christian punk/metal act Underoath spoke to MTV.com about a Halloween show in New Jersey, where the band took the stage dressed like Slipknot and opened the show with the masked marvels' "Duality".

"Our manager called their management, and they sent us some masks and said all they wanted was some pictures," guitarist and songwriter Timothy McTague recalled. "We all had jumpsuits with their numbers spray-painted on them. It was funny as crap. Both of our singers love Slipknot. There's a lot of respect there, for sure."

That's a strange revelation considering Slipknot's catalog is filled with tales of serial killers, followers of black magic and other evildoers. Underoath, however, draw a distinction between wicked people and wicked imagery. "I feel like there are two ways to be satanic," he explained. "You have bands like Atreyu, who are dark and twisted and have pentagrams and say they believe in vampires and all this evil stuff. But at the end of the day, those guys are just doing theater. We've toured with them several times, and there's no strife there.

"I feel bands like them and Slipknot don't truly believe in what they're talking about," he continued. "People who are truly satanic are different, and when they step into a church everything goes weird. But if I started talking to you five minutes ago and I thought you were just a dude, and now you tell me you're a satanic dude, I'm not going to think of you any differently. I love everyone for what they do, and if someone wants to have an adult conversation about doctrinal beliefs or spiritual warfare, that's fine. We'll talk to anybody."

Slipknot Guitarist A-OK
Launch Radio Networks reports: Slipknot's fall North American tour was nearly sidelined when guitarist Jim Root broke his wrist in a biking accident the day before he was supposed to leave for the trip. Root sat out that trek, but told Launch he's healed and ready to get to work on the next album from his other band, Stone Sour. "I'm all done, man," he said. "I got my cast off, like, two weeks ago. I just had my last examination and my last X-rays, you know. He said I'm all good. He said, just do everything as you normally would now. Every once in a while if I'm not thinking about it, you know, I'll, like, use it, put all my weight on it or something and that doesn't feel very good."
