Guerrilla Radio
Music by Rage Against the Machine
Lyrics by Zack de la Rocha
Standard tuning

This tune is surprisingly simple but you are going to need a few things to
make it sound like you hear it on the record. A guitar with two pickups
and two volume knobs to do Tom Morello's toggle switch technique is a must
for the solo. You'll need a phaser (Tom uses a Small Stone) for the bit
right before the solo, but you can also approximate that sound with a
combination of a delay, flanger, and a wah pedal. For pedals, you'll need
a Digitech Whammy, a digital delay set to a quick repeat rate, a wah
pedal, a flanger (if you don't have a phaser), and possibly an EQ with the
settings pushed all the way up to boost the sound of the guitar for
sections where it stands out over the other instruments (i.e. the phasing
effect and the solo). Play the entire song with the toggle switch set on
the bridge pickup, and with the bridge volume at 10 and the neck volume at
0.

Intro (Tom gets down in front of his amp and plays the riff using feedback
with distortion and a bit of digital delay, but you can get it to sound
pretty close if you mess with the delay a little to compensate for the
lack of feedback. Strum smoothly alternating between upward and downward
strokes.)

E---0--2--2--2---0--2--0--2------ (repeat 8x)

Main riff/chorus (Exactly the same as intro. Kill the digital delay and
play away from your amp just with distortion). Strum the strings a little
harder and a little faster than before so it's the same melody but there's
a difference in tone, rhythm, and speed. Play it 7x and end it the 8th
time with

Verse ("Transmission") I'm not sure about the transcription for the
melody, but the sound is definitely just a wah pedal and the distortion
settings from your amp head. The melody part sounds right but I can't get
the exact same sound out of my speaker as you hear on the record. Try
variations of this to see if it sounds more accurate. Rock the wah pedal
back and forth with the beat. Stop playing when Zack sings "More for Gore"

Chorus ("Lights out! Guerrilla Radio!") Play exactly the same as riff on

Verse ("Contact") Stop playing when Zack sings "Off 'em all out that box"

Chorus (Play riff 8 x without the ending like the first two)

Pre-solo (Here's where you use that phaser. I don't have one but have
been able to get something that remotely replicates the sound by
combining delay, wah, and flange. I'm not positive this is it, but I
think it's just the chorus riff played over the effect, but I could be
wrong)

Solo (This is the kicker, where Tom makes his guitar sound like a
jacked-up harmonica. You're going to need a Digitech Whammy XP-100 and a
wah wah to pull this off. I've nailed the melody note for note, but I'm
not sure about the settings for the Whammy. Try raising the pitch 1 or 2
octaves (settings 13 and 14) and experiment with that. I've also found
that harmonizing up a fifth (settings 27 or 28) is pretty close, but it
might just be my crappy little amp that doesn't make it sound right. Rock
the wah wah back and forth with each note you pick with your fretting
hand, and with your picking hand, flick the toggle switch back and forth
so that it's in the down position every time you play a note)

(hold the last A note - 5th string 12th fret - in this melody and pick the
toggle switch back and forth really quick while you keep rocking the wah
pedal so you can get a slight breakup in the transmission that will give
the solo its psychedelic effect)

the previous one except you mute the strings at the second fret and pick
them really hard. Listen to the song for the rhythm and speed.

That's it If you figure out the exact riff for the phaser part and the
verse, please send corrections to Lance Buchi at [email protected] so he
can put it up at the Complete Rage Against the Machine site
(www.musicfanclubs.org/rage), the only Rage fan site that matters! This
song is a jam and a half and is surprisingly simple to play once you have
some basic guitar virtuosity. Definitely a Rage signature tune Enjoy!
