Welcome to version 2.0 of the Our Lady Peace FAQ. With the growing success of Our Lady Peace, there has
been an increase in the number of questions about the band. In this FAQ, we have tried to answer some of the
most common questions. Be sure to have read this document before asking dumb questions to Transparent
Humans. In no way is the FAQ to be considered complete. Any corrections or additions are greatly appreciated

1.1 - Who are the members of Our Lady Peace?

1.2 - Where did the band's name come from?
The name for the band comes from a 1943 poem titled "Our Lady Peace" by American poet Mark Van Doren.
Mark Van Doren is the father of the Charles Van Doren, who was involved in a game show scandal in the 1960's.
This incident was the basis of the 1994 movie "Quiz Show".
1.3 - When did the band start?
Our Lady Peace was formed in Toronto, in 1992, by Mike Turner and Raine Maida. When their original group
refused to get serious, Mike and Raine decided to audition more committed bandmates. Eventually, they found
Chris Eacrett and Jeremy Taggart (who was only 17 at the time).
1.4 - Who are the band's influences?
The musical influences for each member of Our Lady Peace are very diverse. Raine Maida admires many female
vocalists such as Bjork, Tori Amos, Sheila Chandra, and Sinead O' Connor as well as male vocalists Jeff Buckley
and Otis Redding. Mike Turner was influenced by such punk bands as The Sex Pistols, The Jam and Boomtown
Rats. Jeremy Taggart was brought up listening to Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Chris Eacrett brought to the mix
a heavy metal bass influence by listening to such band as Rage Against The Machine, and Living Color.
1.5 - What were the band members doing before OLP?
Raine was at the University of Toronto, majoring in criminology. Chris was studying marketing at Ryerson
University in Toronto, while Jeremy was finishing high school. Mike, who is originally from Bradford, England,
was working in a machine shop. He has a degree in English from the University of Western Ontario. Duncan was
working as a set dresser for the TV series Due South and playing in the band Blue Heavies.
1.6 - Why did Chris Eacrett leave?
The band and Chris felt that they were moving in different directions, both musically and personally and decided it
would be best if they parted ways.
Section 2.0 - The Music
2.1 - How did Our Lady Peace get signed?
With limited finances, the band went to Arnyard Studios to record a three-song demo. Raine and a friend passed
the demo tape around to several labels at New York CMJ music conference in 1993. Geffen and Interscope
showed an interest in the band which then caught the attention of other labels including Sony Music Canada. The
band ended up signing with Sony in Canada and later with Relativity Records in the United States.
2.2 - What albums have Our Lady Peace released?
"Naveed" is the bands debut album. It was released in Canada in May 1994 through Sony Music Canada and
one year later in the United States through Relativity Records. The song titles are:

In Canada, singles were released for: The Birdman, Supersatellite, Starseed, Hope, Naveed, and Julia.
In the U.S. the only singles released were Supersatellite, Starseed and Naveed.
Our Lady Peace's sophomore release "Clumsy" was released on Jan 21st in Canada on Sony Music
Entertainment (Canada) and will be released in the US in early March on Columbia Records.

Both albums were produced by Arnold Lanni and recorded at Arnyard Studios, in Weston ON Canada
2.3 - Have OLP recorded any cover songs?
Our Lady Peace recorded a cover of Neil Young's "The Needle And The Damage Done" on the double disc
tribute album, "Borrowed Tunes" . A single disc version, with only half the artists, is also available and is titled,
"Into The Black". Our Lady Peace's cover is also included on this album.
As well, Our Lady Peace recorded a cover of The Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows". It was released
exclusively on the Soundtrack the to the movie The Craft.
2.4 - What videos have OLP released?
The band has shot videos for The Birdman, Starseed, Hope, Naveed, and Superman's Dead. All of the videos
were released in Canada, while only Starseed and Naveed were released in the United States. In the early days of
Our Lady Peace's career, they recorded an independent video for the song "Out of Here". This song was never
recorded for an album, and is not believed to have been played in any live shows since Naveed was recorded.
2.5 - What are the songs about?
The songs on Naveed can be interpreted in many different ways. For a pretty good rundown on what they're
about you can see the synopsis on this web site.
2.6 - Where can I find the song "Mona Lisa"?
This song is NOT an OLP song, but a song written by Sons Of Freedom, a band from Vancouver. OLP has
performed this song in concert before.
2.7 - What happened to the songs "Out of Here", "Anacin", "Spider Gun", "Disgusted", "Home" and "Trapeze"?
"Out of Here" was a song that OLP recorded an independent music video for before they were signed to Sony
Music (see 2.6). "Anacin" was renamed "Story of a 100 Aisles". "Spider Gun" was renamed "Disgusted", and then
renamed again to "Shaking" for the release of Clumsy. "Home" and "Trapeze" were played during the band's short
summer 96 tour with Alanis. Although these 2 songs were recorded during the making of Clumsy, they did not
make it onto the album. It is possible that they will be released at a later time.

3.1 - What is written on Raine's guitar in the Naveed video?
The writing on Raine's guitar is Persian for Naveed.
3.2 - Who have OLP played with?
Our Lady Peace have toured with countless acts. Some of these include: 54-40, I Mother Earth, Bush, Elastica,
Cake, Face To Face, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Matthew Sweet, Sponge, Letters to Cleo, ... the list goes on.
Notably, they have opened for Page & Plant and Van Halen.
3.3 - Have they ever played on any TV shows?
Our Lady Peace have been featured on The Jon Stewart Show, The Conan O'Brien Show, MTV, and also
played on the Juno Awards.
3.4 - What awards have they won?
The band picked up the award for Best Song Of the Year, "Starseed", at Toronto's Q107 awards in '95. Mike
Turner also won for Best Guitarist at the awards.
OLP won three awards at the 1995 CASBY (Canadian Artists Selected By You) sponsored by Toronto radio
station CFNY-FM. They won for favorite new artist, favorite new release for Naveed, and favorite new song,
Naveed.
3.5 - What does Naveed mean?
Naveed literally translated means "bearer of good news".
3.6 - What are the markings on the CD jewel box and the jacket?
It is sanskrit for Our Lady Peace.
3.7 - Where was the Starseed video shot?
The video was shot at the old Sears warehouse in Toronto. Interestingly, during the filming, there was an accident
involving the lighting box. The lighting box was about three stories above the band and was set up to move up and
down, as seen in the video. Part of the box fell downward, just missing Mike and Jeremy's heads. No one was
injured.
3.8 - Who is the Birdman/Naveed?
Sol Fox (an actor) is the individual on the cover to both Clumsy and Naveed. He was also in the video for "The
Birdman". However, the song "The Birdman" was written about a man that Raine crossed paths with as a kid
(read the timeline for more info).
Naveed was a schoolmate of Raine's. Nothing more is known about him except for what his name means (see
2.4).
3.9 - In the Superman's Dead video is it a boy or a girl?
It's a boy... can't you tell?

4.1 - Is there a snail mail fan club?

4.2 - Is there an internet OLP mailing list?
There is an excellent net fan club dedicated to Our Lady Peace called Transparent Humans. Keep in mind that
this is NOT to post to the band, but to other OLP fans. Fans post messages for others to read, expressing their
opinions, reviews etc. on the band. They also feature trivia questions with rarities for prizes.

4.3 - Is there a Usenet newsgroup?
No, there is no newsgroup (as of yet) for the band. However, on ourladypeace.com, and this web site, there are
suitable alternatives which work the same way.
4.4 - Where can I get OLP merchandise?
Besides at their shows, you can order shirts through the fan club (3.1). If rarities are your thing, the mailing list
(4.1) frequently runs contest with live CD's, posters etc., up for grabs.
