Introduction - please read! 2. Changes since the last edition 3. How to get the latest edition 4. How to review a CD 5. The reviews 1. Introduction - please read! Welcome to the fourth edition of The Guide To Oasis Bootlegs! This edition includes reviews of 84 Oasis bootlegs. More than a year has passed since the third edition of the guide and this edition really should have been released a long time ago. I am very sorry for the delay, but I promise that there will be more frequent updates in the future. Thanks for all the new reviews! Some of you people out there really need to start realising what you are reading. I do not wish to sound harsh, but as I keep getting these requests I have to spell it out: I do not sell bootlegs! This is a collection of reviews, not a mail-order catalogue. Please note that the guide is supposed to be about bootlegs on CDs that are made and sold in, at least fairly, large numbers. We really do not need reviews of your home-made CDRs, nor the stuff you have taped off radio. The market for Oasis bootlegs seems to be large and new bootlegs are being released all the time. It is very possible that we are facing a new trend, a trend in releasing bootlegs on recordable CDs. This should lead to increasing supply and lower prices. Some of them are already being sold and a review for "Spreading The Word - Exeter '97" appears in this issue of the guide. What kind of bootlegs should the guide include? Live bootlegs only or all kinds? Personally I am totally against all these compilations of studio material that is already available on official releases. I am leaning towards getting rid of those reviews and concentrate on "real" bootlegs, but I need your advice. What do you think? When reading the reviews, please remember that the sound quality mentioned is stated on the subjective mind of the reviewer. In some cases an "excellent" show may in fact only sound as "very good" to you. This is a problem we will have to live with. To make it as good as possible, please raise your voice if you think something is wrong! Feel free to copy and spread the guide AS LONG AS NOTHING IS CHANGED! Do not add, delete or change anything. ANY COMMERCIAL USE IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED! If you have an Oasis bootleg (on CD) that has not yet been reviewed, please review it. The future of the guide depends on you! Martin Eksten, April 1998 2. Changes since the last edition 28 new reviews have been added. The sound quality of HOMEDOWN SHOWDOWN has been changed to Very Good. 3. How to get the latest edition As soon as a new edition is finished I will post information about it on Whatever - the Oasis mailing list (to subscribe send e-mail to majordomo@kuci.org with the words subscribe whatever in the body of the mail). If you do not subscribe to Whatever, just e-mail me and ask for the new edition. However, you should be able to find the latest edition at the same place where you found this one. 4. How to review a CD Send your reviews by e-mail to eksten@df.lth.se This format is used: [TITLE] [MANUFACTURER] If no name can be found, simply write "no manufacturer mentioned". [CATALOG NUMBER] [TIME] The total running time. Please check with your CD-player, do not trust what is written on the CD. [TRACK LISTING] The complete track listing in correct order. Write the _true_ track titles and order (note that this is not always the same as what is written on the back of the CD). Mention if any of the songs are acoustic. [SOURCE] The venue and date of the show. About the date, please write e.g. May 10, 1997 (or 10 May, 1997) and not 05/10/1997 (or 10/05/1997) as people from different countries use different standards. [SOUND QUALITY] This is in terms of bootleg quality. Compare the sound quality to other live recordings and not to studio recorded material. The rating scale is as follows: Excellent Very Good Good Fair Poor If you are uncertain which alternative to choose, choose the lower one. Combinations like "Good - Very Good" are also used. A recording rated as excellent should sound almost like a "commercial release" and be very enjoyable to listen to. A recording rated as poor is very unpleasant to listen to. If you know, please state whether it is a soundboard or an audience recording. [COMMENTS] Anything worth mentioning that has not been covered in any of the above fields, as well as anything especially good or bad about the actual CD and packaging. If possible, try to say something about the band's performance; were they in a good/bad mood, were any songs played in a different way, how was the audience, etc. If you know, tell whether the show is complete or not. This is important! Mention if there is something wrong with the song titles listed on the CD. This is actually quite common as most bootleg manufacturers do not know everything about the band. Also make sure to mention if the venue and/or the date printed on the cover is wrong. Also, please state whether you want your name and/or e-mail address to be included in the review or not. The idea is that people should be able to contact you if they have any questions. 5. Soundboard Comments: The Utrecht show is not a complete concert, the tracks are also out of order. Liam was having trouble with his voice that evening. He sounds hoarse through most of the songs and can not finish a few, so Noel takes over the vocals. There is a six page booklet with pictures from various concerts, tour dates and a shameless plug for Oxygen's other bootleg CD - Undrugged. On the back of the CD there is a great picture of Noel and Liam wearing Manchester City shirts. On the CD cover it says that the two demos are sung by Noel. But in fact, only the second is sung by Noel, the first is sung by Liam with Noel singing harmony. 250,000 OASIS FANS CAN'T BE WRONG KTS KTS607-608 (64:41, 62:56) Reviewed by R. Campos CD 1 1. Once again KTS did an excellent job, two picture discs and a booklet full of photos. John Squire joins the band on tracks 18-19. The Berkeley concert is also great, although not complete. The two songs from Be Here Now (not yet released at the moment) come as bonus tracks. This is one of my best Oasis boots. THE ACOUSTIC SESSIONS KTS KTS 494 (56:01) Reviewed by Gilles Riand 1. As Liam was not present on stage, Noel confirmed once more to be an excellent singer. Great show. Unfortunatelly, most of the talk between Noel and the audience is not present on this recording. The rest of the CD is also great. Tracks 11 and 12 are just Noel and Bonehead (on keyboard), tracks 13-16 are Noel only and track 17 is Noel with Burt Bacharach. It is interesting to compare this set with the one from Glastonbury, which took place only a week earlier, as the band works the Morning Glory material into the set. There are quite a few differences in the set order. Liam: "You kid down in the front there. Don't be throwing your beer up here because we got loads of things here, yeah, and it busts. And then we gotta go home, you know what I mean? So just keep your drinks to yourself." Noel: "You fucking Belgian!" The sleeve contains many recent tour pictures of the band, but, on the back, behind the track listings, there is a picture of someone else live. I cannot really tell, but it could be Richard Ashcroft. The sleeve says nothing about the venue for the first 11 tracks exept for 'Europe 1996', but the same tracks are included on the bootleg 'Fab Five', and are labeled 'Cardiff CIA 19th March'. That is partly correct as the venue was Cardiff CIA, but the date was the 18th, not 19th. I went to the date on the 19th, and talked to friends who went on the 18th, and I am convinced. The Cardiff concert is not complete, unfortunately. The acoustic set and I Am The Walrus follow, which I have on cassette. The band talk a lot to the crowd, and the crowd respond with more than enough noise! Favourite tracks? All of em! (According to Sara Strum the quality is only Good-Very Good; the back ground vocals, sung by Noel, are too loud in some songs (Noel comments that, "we're using special bass equipment but the subbass is so low you can't even hear it").) Comments: This is the infamous "sloppy" show that made Noel leave the band and disappear for 2 weeks. The CD has an amusing cartoon on the cover of Noel and Liam being accosted by Judge Dredd, who sentences them to 20 years in the iso-cubes. Meanwhile, the scene in their hotel room includes a smashed-in TV set, naked groupies, guitars, beer, and lines of coke. The back cover has the track listing and looks like a copy of the real thing. There is not much else in the packaging. The inside cover reads: "This is the soundboard recording of the historic 'Whisky' show. It was at this particular show that these uni-browed Brits broke into a fight sending one home in a tiff and breaking up their first North American tour. The best part of breaking up is when you're making up! Here's looking at you lads!" (The spelling and factual errors are theirs.) I believe this is the whole show. This is the infamous show where they supposedly blew it and messed up. There are long bits of silence in between songs and at one point, Noel complains about the monitors not working correctly. Also, at one point, instead of "Maybe I don't really wanna know how your garden grows," Liam sings "Maybe I don't really wanna know how you pick your nose". If you're willing to pay the price for a double CD bootleg this one is a must! Gary: This is an excellent bootleg. It is the second day of the Maine Road concerts. The band shifts moods a lot. Liam gets mad singing Whatever because either Noel is goofing off or the crowd is singing too loud. He storms off a minute into the song causing the song to crash and leaving Noel to start it up again by himself. Very Good in most places, but Round Are Way is only Good, as the trumpets are a bit too loud, and Supersonic is only Good as the Bass is a bit too heavy. COMMENTS: A very good performance. The band were in a very good mood, and Liam spent the time inbetween songs talking complete nonsense, which was funny. The most noticeable thing about the setlist is that they play Cum On Feel The Noize instead of I Am The Walrus. At the end of Whatever, they sing that song which I think is by the Kinks that goes "All the young blues, carry the news...". Also, at the end of Whatever, Liam comments on the song: "Glad you all like it, I say it's a pile of shit" The first ten seconds or so of Wonderwall are missing for some reason. The packaging is very good, but on the track list, Round Are Way is spelt as "Round Our Way". The CD itself is a picturedisc of a silhouette of Noel playing the Union Jack guitar. Comments: The band is in a good mood. Noel plays with the crowd and Liam is totally out of it as he cannot remember where they are (e.g. during The Swamp Song, he yells "Hello France!"). Throughout the rest of the concert, he keeps on asking Noel where they are. He also insults the crowd, though they cannot hear (or maybe understand?) him. Really funny commentary from the boys (e.g. Liam introduces "Hello" as "Frig Off"). However, Liam is bleeped (censored) when he swears before Supersonic, which I thought was dumb. After Roll With it, the radio station probably took a break because you hear a guy say "Live from the Pit, Oasis". The transition from Slide Away to Don't Look Back In Anger is not that great either as the crowd's applause is abruptly cut and DLBIA starts (bad editing, though neither song gets cut). And if that was not enough, they edited Noel's end riff during Live Forever! Finally, they fade out I Am The Walrus after about five minutes. If you can look past these little glitches, then this is a must have! Even if not, it is not a bad bootleg to add to your '96 tour collection. Rock 'n' Roll Star (encore) Source: Wetlands, New York, US; October 29, 1994 Sound Quality: Excellent, but slight changes in volume in the first track. Soundboard Comments: One of the best bootlegs I have. The recording is excellent, but there is no crowd noise unfortunately. This is only Oasis's second ever gig in New York, and their first ever encore. The band talk a lot to the crowd. Noel, to crowd: 'Can anyone lend us a tenner?, 'You don't know how lucky you are' [encore], 'Why don't you come up here and we'll go down there', 'Anyone like the Beatles?'. Liam, to crowd: 'This one's for the clouds' [Up In The Sky], 'Bring it on down New York!', 'It's good to see everyone moving and dancing...', 'Stage diver coming through, go on'. The band play each and every song very well. The cover has a picture of Noel wearing a Beatles T-shirt with New York at night behind him. Inside the sleeve, there is a picure of the band backstage at Wetlands and some shameful plugs for four of the other five Oasis bootlegs made by Vulgartone. According to the sleeve the date of the concert is the 24th, but it really is the 29th. Another classic by the label, highly recommended. The back shows the brothers Gallagher standing in the sun. The insert features a photo of Noel sitting Indian-style with an electric guitar, and the inside of the insert is a photo of Noel standing with the same guitar at his feet. The actual disc has a picture of Noel playing an electric guitar. The quality of the packaging is first-rate! Noel sings all of the songs on the disc, as it says that Liam had a throat infection on the back of the package. It is a first-rate performance and Noel seems to be in a good mood. He mentions that Liam regrets not being able to perform, or something to that effect. The four acoustic songs are brilliant and Noel lets the crowd sing portions of Stand By Me all alone. The true emotional gravity of Don't Go Away is truly done justice here. I would recommend this bootleg to anyone who likes Be Here Now, since the songs are all done justice live in concert. It is unfortunately not the complete show. Live Forever and Wonderwall, played after The Girl In The Dirty Shirt, are missing. ODE TO THE WALRUS Flashback 03.96.0269 (64:53) Reviewed by R. Campos 1. Sometimes it fades away at the end of the song, and you cannot hear the ending. Comments: This was packaged very well. On the back side of the sleeve, it has a picture of Noel choking Liam with a rope. This bootleg is great because on CD1 you get six rare and unreleased songs and on CD2 they all are accoustic. All songs on the second disc are sung by Noel, except tracks 22-24. I love the famous Shakermaker: "I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony, I'd like to buy you all a Coke, to keep us company, ahhahh shake along with me, ahhahh shake along with me, ahhahh shake along with me, and now we all drink Pepsi". You can tell that Noel and Liam are high, because Liam's voice is really course and Noel's guitar playing is off. Overall, a great bootleg! The sound is very shallow, there is hardly any crowd noise and the bass drowns out the rhythm guitar. The band don't say much either. The cover has that picture of Liam reading the book 'Cocaine True Cocaine Blue'. The rest of the sleeve just has some pictures of the band. It is my least favourite bootleg and the worst of the Vulgartone collection. But it is OK if you are after some complete shows. THE U.K. REMIXES Reworked (?) O.A.M. 20696 (70:44) Reviewed by R. On the back there is a picture of the brothers playing in Virgin Megastore, London, to promote the (What's The Story) Morning Glory? album. And inside there are two pictures of the brothers. Many arguments can be heard between the first 6 tracks. There is a lot of friction between band members - they are very stressed. It ends with Noel demanding Liam sorts it out, 'You're the singer, so sort it out!'. Track 7, Cloudburst, is the last track from their first headline gig. Tracks 11, 12 and 17 are poor recordings. Comments: This is a collection of acoustic tracks from various sources sung by both Noel and Liam. There are a few exceptional tracks on the CD, notably the first track, Live Forever, sung by Noel and the last bonus track of Champagne Supernova (which is actually the only non-acoustic track). Although tracks 3-5 are listed as coming from a fan club show, this is dubious for a couple of reasons. Firstly there is no audience and secondly the track 4 version of Supersonic is exactly the same as the track 8 version of Supersonic... This means tracks 3-5 and 7-10 probably all come from the same source - the studio demos listed as the source for tracks 7-10. The packaging is excellent with an 8-page colour booklet containing various band photos. Overall a very good CD. UNLIAMMED Tube tucd 013 (71:25) Reviewed by Mazhar Al-Hadid 1. Hello 2. At first, I did not think Noel could sing Hello and Wonderwal nearly as well as Liam could. But when I heard this CD I asked myself why Noel is not the "lead" singer of the band. His performance is masterful. This is one of the greatest CDs Oasis has to offer. Hello and Live Forever sound unbelievable with Noel's voice. The overall performance was fantastic, and the audience seemed very pleased with what they saw. The packaging is good but there is one flaw. The live acoustic versions of Slide Away and Fade Away are rare, though sound quality is lacking. What is interesting is that tracks 14-18 appear to come from the same set, and I had never known Noel to play five songs in his set. The last track is a great version of Wonderwall, complete with strings and drums, and Noel on vocals. The presention is average. The front shows Liam and Noel at Virgin Megastore during the (WTS)MG? release party, while the two pictures inside show the band (with Tony) playing football. It provides a glimpse of Oasis before becoming the huge band they are now, demonstrating the clear Stone Roses influence on both Noels songwriting and Liam's singing. On most tracks Liam sounds painfully like a poor Ian Brown. Although Noel's songwriting is not up to the quality of his later tracks there are a couple of gems which, if produced properly, would not have gone amiss on Definitely Maybe. There is one cover, Better Let You Know - an early 90's dance track - and one instrumental track, Snakebite. Of the other tracks on the CD, the untitled jams are nothing to write home about. Fade Away instrumental is nothing mind-blowing, but the last three songs are excellent acoustic versions of (WTS)MG? tracks sung by Noel. Especially good is the wonderful version of Don't Look Back In Anger. The packaging contains band photos including Tony McCarroll which is only fair seeing as he drums on the majority of the tracks. The times given for each track on the packaging is roughly 10-20 seconds too long. This means the time given for the total length of the cd of 70:05 mins is wrong, it is actually 68:12 minutes. Comments: The CDs themselves are very basic black and white colours, but slightly reminiscent of the first few CD singles. The packaging is good, except for the small area of wierd looking pink and black stripes. The reason that the Knebworth tracks are from different dates is because when Radio 1 (the English radio station that this broadcast was recorded from) broadcast the show live on the night, they stopped the live transmission after Don't Look Back In Anger and broadcast a recording of the last three songs from the previous night instead. This was done to avoid broadcasting the two new songs. However, the manufacturer of the bootleg realised this and obviously obtained an audience recording of the two songs from one of the two nights and placed that in. A really good show, the band was in a very good mood, the audience were "mad for it", plenty of wisecracks made by Liam and Noel, and there was a special appearance by John Squire during Champagne Supernova. The best song of the night had to be Whatever / Octopus' Garden where the crowd sings along. Liam cannot remember one line, and at the end of the song he insults some scousers (=someone from Liverpool, England). This is one of the best shows I have ever heard.
