HEY YOU
(G. Stefani, T. Kanal)
from the album Tragic Kingdom

Written during the four track demo recording of "Snakes", the song was written by some role reversing on Gwen and Tony's part. Inspired by the only guitar chords Gwen knew (lifted from "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" by the Smiths) she started playing as Tony sang the melodies. The Don't Speak single features an acoustic version which is truer to the original version, however the album version is fully electric and incorporates layered backing vocals as well as strange instruments such as a sitar. The song was played electric occasionally, but in most of the larger shows following the release of Tragic Kingdom it was played alone by Gwen and Tom as the first song of the encore. On the ROCK SHOW tour onwards Tony started playing acoustic bass and Adrian played bongos.

Hey you with the wedding dress on
Made of white chiffon blowing in the wind
Hey you with the dreams in your head
You've been so mislead by your heart's pull

I know you're waiting for your ship to come in
You anxiously wait for such a long time

You're just like my Ken and Barbie doll
You dress up, you play the game
You're just like my Ken and Barbie doll
Your name will never change
(Your name will never change)

Hey you with your eyes full of hope
You think you can rope your desire
Well hey you, you naive thing
Your patience in turn will tire

I know you're thinking that your tide will roll in
How did you ever get such high hopes?

You're just like my Ken and Barbie doll
You dress up, you play the game
You're just like my Ken and Barbie doll
Your name will never change
(Your name will never change)

You're just like my Ken and Barbie doll
In a plastic world of make believe
You're just like my Ken and Barbie doll
You know he's just gonna leave
(Gonna leave)

Hey you... hey you... hey you

I know you're waiting for your life to begin
Well wake up girl you've got it all wrong
You want a prize that you're not gonna win
Oh face it girl you've got it all wrong

You're just like my Ken and Barbie doll
You dress up, you play the game
Oh ou're just like my Ken and Barbie doll
Your name will never change
(Your name will never change)

Oh you're just like my Ken and Barbie doll
In a plastic world of make believe
You're just like my Ken and Barbie doll
You know he's just gonna leave
