She wants a coffee. She drops the coffee, the dish and the cup. She has been crying, it's easy to see. She has a black eye.
A group of big-boys who, besides feel free of their sins, were violently anxious about seeing the Rolling Stones, had hurled stones at her. On Monday 03/30 she dropped her Argentinian t-shirt to the floor, as a protest sign, and she left the stage never to return... She wasn't able to sing even 2 songs. The next day, she looks very sad at the hotel. Three fans are with her in that difficult moment: a girl who appeared to be Japanese, another one with a bouquet of flowers and the third one a "nerd" with bangs and glasses, with a "We Love You" sign.
After dropping the coffee, Meredith sits at the head of the table and then she says, "If any of you wants to ask me something about my career or my music, please save it to the end. First I want to talk about all of this. I need to talk about what happened."
She says that she is a celebrity, and that this regretable episode will be known through all the world, that she is sorry about this because she knows that not all Argentinians are like this, and that the journalists had been so sweet with her at every moment. Right from there, the 'chat' became a kind of therapy session where the journalists tried to console the lady.
Meredith said, "Imagine that playing with the Stones is a very important step in my career and now I won't be able to do it. When I knew that Bob Dylan was also going to come, I got even more disappointed, because he is one of the artists that I admire. The worst part of all this stuff is that a small group of people not only ruined one of the dreams of my life, they also took away the chance of seeing me and listening to my songs from the people who wanted to. But I can't risk my and my musicians lives. Let's not forget that I'm not the only one who had things hurled at me, my musicians got it also, and I'm responsible for them too."
"I was playing," Meredith said, "and I looked at those faces... Let's be honest, they weren't faces like yours or mine, all the hate of all those ill-mannered people... They were drunk, they were drugged, they looked like animals, and the truth is that I asked myself: What have I done to them?"
"I don't want to be a pop-star. I made an album that speaks about hope, resurrection, waking up, an album that has a very deep message. What is Rock'n Roll?? It's just an illusion, a moment. My life is worth more than a show."
Then the more important question came: was she going to play on Thursday 04/02 and Saturday 04/04? Meredith said that she wanted to, but she really can't in these conditions. Her people said, "C'mon, Meredith, everything's gonna be alright." The journalists also said, "C'mon, try it again." Someone suggested that maybe the Stones should present her. Meredith said that they were so gentle with her, that Mick Jagger came to greet her, but that she didn't think that it would be good. "I must take care of myself. I don't know if it's good to shield myself on them."
With a melancholic smile, even more melancholic because of her eye, Meredith says, "As in the first concert it was all wrong, I thought that it could be a good idea to wear the Argentinian football t-shirt, as a peace sign, but I see it didn't work though."
Then she says, "I'm sorry, I was supposed to be beautiful now but I'm awful. All this stuff has overwhelmed me."
This is how the sad moments of this girl ended here in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a girl victim of the intolerance of a part of the public and the negligence of the concert organizers, maybe the only ones who didn't know that this was going to happen.

What Happened in Argentina
As told by Argentinians
This section is put together in cooperation with
Meredith Brooks Rules!!!

Rodrigo's story:
Rollings Stones tour: (I don't like their songs very
much, anyway)
1 day (sat 03/28/1998):
- Meredith opens the show, after a local band (very
very very BAD band),
called "Las Pelotas" (something like "The Balls", in
english) made their
one. The people like her songs "Bitch", "I need",
etc... but they're not
pretty excited, they just like her songs... (yes, that
people don't even
deserve her singing at them....)
2 day (sun 03/29/1998):
- A normal show, but the crowd is not so happy. A
small group start
insulting her. A very few throw something. Meredith
think something's
wrong!. The group of RS fans does not listen to her
songs, they just repeat
"we want the Rolling Stones, ...". (that kind of
people just stink!). After
the show, she goes to the RS camerino and she says HEY
what was that??. They
don't know why that happened. They say to Meredith
"Give the people a second
chance, they will like your music. Try again
tomorrow...". A little
dissapointed, she waits till the next show...
3 day (mon 03/30/1998) AWFUL!!!!!!
- at the morning.... Meredith goes to an interview
with some guys from a
radio program called "Cual es", a morning-prog of the
"Rock & Pop" FM
station. She says she don't understand why people was
acting like that, but
she takes tonight show as a second chance to get to
the audience. She says
that the show will be shorter, she won't play all the
songs, only the more
commercial ones. She sings "I need" unplugged in the
radio-program (Great
song, Meredith!) and one of the guys of the prog's
crew says to her "Hey!
why don't you wear an argentina t-shirt tonight!! the
people wil just love
that! (Stupids, they should love her MUSIC, not what
she's wearing, but,
anyway...). She says "I will rock again tonight, and I
will rock harder!".
She also say that one of her dreams was to open for
the Rolling Stones. This
was her dream. The Rolling Stones were who personaly
choose her from many
many other bands to open their show. She was so
excited... They've said to
her "Come with us to Argentina, people is so nice in
there"....
- at night.....
Meredith goes to the stage after the band "Las
pelotas" (yes, that
baaaad band that some people stupidly like) finish
their show. She start
with a song (I just don't remember the name right now,
but it was a great
song -I was listening the recital on the radio because
I wanted to hear
Meredith's songs-) and when it finished, some people
were clapping, some
started insulting her again, and some were just acting
like if the scenario
were empty... BAD for any music artist... She can't
believe it, she is doing
her best for them...
Second song: "Bitch". That should break the ice,
everybody likes the song.
so.... BUT NO! when the song ends, some motherfuckers
start throwing things
at her... coins... little glasses fragments...
bottles!! ...some son of a
bitch throws a bottle that hits her in her left eye...
She must go, afraid
for her life! She runs away, crying... her heart
broken... her dream (of
opening for the stones) crumbling to the ground...She
says "please...stop...
it hurts...."
----------
Nobody, specialy Meredith, deserves what they've made
to her... she cames to
bring her music to the people, she was invited by the
RS, she came to this
country for give a show, NOT for getting hurt by some
stupid. (I can't say
the right insults in english, but they're some
"inadaptados sociales,
pendejos estpidos que en lugar de abrirse a la msica
se esconden detrs de
la violencia annima, porque ni siquiera son capaces
de dar la cara. Un
montn de maricones que lastiman a una chica que vino
con toda la onda a
tocar su msica". Sorry but I don't know how to say
thay in english)
I think that even if you don't like someone's music
you can't just start
throwing things like some kind of neanderthal...
she's not just a musician,
she is a WOMAN!! I still can't understand WHY they've
made it.
I can only say that I'm embarassed for all of this.
I'm embarassed of being
Argentinian. This is one of those times when you say
"God, why you've made
me born in this #&$^country?"
I only have words of shame for this. I hope she keep
up with her music,
because it is very very good.
I am not a "fan" of Meredith, actually I am a fan of
Garbage, but I'm not so
"closed" so much that I can't listen to other great
musicians, like this
stupid RS fans.
Well, that's all I know for now... hope you don't
think I'm so stupid as
they are because I live in Argentina....
Oh, I think this is goodbye to her next... well, she
said before that this
were going to be a "warmup" for her Tour that would
have been around
Argentina at the end of 1998. I was thinking about go
to Buenos Aires to her
show ( I didn't went this time because I don't like
the RS), but I don't
think she is going to return to this fucking country
anymore..... to bad,
too sad, too shame, too embarassing........ don't you
think?

Carla saw Meredith Brooks perform for the local media at the local
Hard Rock Cafe on March 28, the day before the first show with
the Rolling Stones. She was also at the last press conference
before Meredith Brooks left Argentina as well as at an autograph
session. Here's her story:
I saw her at the media showcase in the Hard
rock cafe, it was the day before she played with the
rolling stones for first time.. she played like 7
songs... I remember I was coming back from my math
classes so it was the 28 of March... (I have the
newspaper).. then I saw her at her last press
conference in her hotel that was one day before she
left...and then at the autograph bin that was awfull,
'cos I thought I was going to be alone in the line and
there it was like 150ppl!!! It wasn't announced in
papers! For god's sake I found some friends and I end
up being the 8th in the line.. but what I didn't like
about it it's that it was so fast that I hadn't time
to say her, hey, I like you music.. you know..that was
it was great!! I heard on the radio that
she would be doing an unplugged so I
called to the Hard rock cafe but nobody knew nothing
(as usual), the day before I was coming back from my
math classes and i hear on the radio Meredith brooks
is starting to play here on the Hard rock! So I ran! I
wasn't far away 'cos I live 4 blocks from the Hard
Rock.. and when I got in the door there was a guy
asking what kind of media do you belong to... LOL I
told him I'd heard about the concert on the radio.. he
didn't want to let me pass, cos it wasn't much space
left for media and actually I'm not a journalist...
then I told him if I could eat there, he told me of
course! isn't the world crazy? why he didn't tell me
that? So I passed and instead of going upstairs to eat
(you could see her from the 1st floor) I walked behind
some guys with cameras and nobody told me anything about
me so I stayed... at the end
of the concert I catch two picks!! I couldn't leave
without take one pick!! :)
The band is really powerfull on stage, I like
a lot her drummer and bassist maybe 'cos they're my
favourites instruments.. she has her OWN way to play
the guitar and that's great! she's very kind.. always
smiling and winking at me ;) (bahh to the audience in
general! ;) I remember I gave them the peace sign
between some songs and she winked at me, smiled and
started to sing... You can FEEL she loves to be play
and jam. At certain moment she told us (ehmm, the
journalists) to come to her 'cos we where like 2
meters far of the stage... and of course I did! She
played great, fire on her fingers, one moment I
thought she was going to fall over me 'cos she was in
the stage's edge.. the stage was really small, and it
was like in every beginning of a band, you know
playing for small crowds.. I love that!! :)
Even when I hadn't heard her music before
(except one time, that was bitch on the radio) I liked
her music.. of course it took me some time to get used
to the level of the amps! but it was great, the only
thing I regret it's not have known her better before
so I would have enjoyed a lot more but it was really
cool anyways!!
I hope to see her again if she comes in the
spring... :) (*sigh*)
I'm going to paste a small part of a "conversation"
with a friend relating what happened.
Carla
Me to Brandon:
it's awesome!! even better than mine's
(because she confused the cds)
the one you're going to receive say carla in the
bottom on the last page.. LOL I just wanted to ask her
who had painted the girl with the guitar! but it was
so fast! I hadn't even time to say her that I liked
her music! so I said, hi I'm Carla c-a-r- ok.. she
signed your cd, and then I said something about if
she's really going to play here but she didn't really
answered.. I guess she's not going to play :(
so I said and this one is for a friend called
Brandon and she signed it (my cd!) ROTFL I put my
fingers on all over my cd I'm stupid! ;) but yours is
even great 'cos she didn't sign the cover, where she's
with a guitar, she signed the part of the child
playing the guitar that's where I had it opened to ask
her who had painted it...
and then the whole band signed it!! :) ROB LADD!!!!!!
cute boy! great drummer!
YEAP!, the drummer of Jagged Little Pill! :)
and the other guys!
he put a peace sign on both cds!
I wanted her to write for me a paragraph of her best
song but when she signed your cd there was another
girl in the quenue so I had to go.
Did you remember to buy me the Meredith
Brooks first cd? COol! if you see any single please
buy it for me, I know soon she'll release "Stop"
I forgot to tell you, before to play with the Rolling
Stones she played in the hard rock cafe and I went to
see her just cos maybe I can get some autograph for
Rob, I couln't get the autograph but I see her and she
was at 50cm of me! It was great even I thought she was
about to fall over me 'cos she played like crazy!! :)
I want to see her again! sometimes i hate the stupids
who threw her things! they must be on jail now! it
was her dream! they're heartless and intolerant
She said she's going to play on Atlanta and Houston..
maybe I don't remember if she said Houston (yeap, I
also went to her last press conference, it was just 5
blocks of my house :) (that's where she said she's
going to be signing autographs) to film the video she
supposed to film here... she's also playing with the
rolling stones in US...
this was to my friend Brandon..
/me turns to normal writing mode:
they offered her the dates for what happened here. I
think the rolling stones behaviour lets a lot to
desire. I thought they're going to cancel the show but
my mother said I'm too innocent. She'll do a
documentary also, she's going to put shots of here!
That's great 'cos I want everybody to see what they
did to her. What people do when they turn into animals
I don't mind what other people may think, I care about
what I think and that's is worse that any other thing.
ouch! I want to see her live!!
She's one of the MoST BRAVE persons I ever
met!. Can you believe to face 30.000 people that are
booing you and threwing you things! and she faced
them!! she had more guts than any other coward that
was on that stadium!!!
(needless to say that was just 'cos she was a
woman and just 'cos they're intolerant)
