I don't know too much about the band, but I really like "Boy" and thought the band was fantastic live.
Can somebody recommend one of the older albums.  Is there one that is considered better than the others?

Well it's all a matter of opinion, but "Hold Me Up" and "Jed" are my
favorites.  "Jed" is more "punk rock", and "Hold Me Up" retains the punk
rock desparation attitiude but gets more melodic.  Kind of the bridge
between when they were a total punk band and when they were more of a
melodic band.  All their albums (even their first one) have great songs on
it.  "Superstar Carwash" is more like "A Boy Named Goo", but not as good.

regarding the goo goo dolls, their previous album, superstar carwash is
excellent and i would recommend it.  also, the one before that, hold me up
is also a great album.  as you can tell, i am a goo fan and have been for
a long time, so all of their albums are really good.  they have two older
ones also, Jed, and their first one was just called goo goo dolls - looks
like fruit-loops on the cover.  each record seems to get better and
better.  the goo's are finally enjoying the success they deserved a long
time ago.  hope you enjoy their records and have a chance to see the band
live many more times.
goo goo dolls rule!

A Boy Named Goo was also my first Goo album.  If you like that, I think a
natural progression would be "hold me up", "Superstar Car Wash", "JED" and
then First Release.  That's the order I got them in and I LOVE them all!!

I agree with Fay. But I think I'd put SuperStar Carwash after Boy Named
Goo
