As discussed in alt.config (originally under title alt.fan.goo-goo-dolls). Note that the proposal for rec.music.artists.goo-goo-dolls received 143 Yes votes (although it failed 143 Yes to 86 No) From the proponents Fay Boyle and Brian Goodman : Discussion in alt.config resulted in the name, originally proposed as alt.fan.goo-goo-dolls, being changed to alt.music.goo-goo-dolls. Most posts were favorable to the creation of this group, although in some crossposted newsgroups, we were met with insults and remarks to "get out of our newsgroup", another indication of why this group doesn't fit in with any current newsgroup. The Goo Goo Dolls is one of the hottest bands in the music business today. Although thought by some to be a new band, the Goo Goo Dolls have been around since the late 80's. Their music has been called everything from hardcore pop to melodic punk, an indication of the band's extremely versatile talents. Combine the talent with the hook-laden guitar riffs, two very capable vocalists, profound lyrics and non-stop energy and you've got the Goo Goo Dolls. JUSTIFICATION: Over the past 10 years a strong loyal fan base has been building for the Goo Goo Dolls with new fans being added daily. The fan club is active, with over 200 members. The Goo Goo Dolls mailing list (penberth@oswego.edu) consists of over 180 members with messages ranging between 20 and 50 a day, a lot of activity for a list of that size. There are more than five webpages devoted exclusively to the band and several others which give them considerable mention. The Goo Goo Dolls have been touring almost non-stop for much of their career and have just finished an exhausting 18 months of touring in the United States, Canada and Japan. Fans worldwide are scrambling to find new forums in which to discuss the band and its activities. The newsgroup alt.music.goo-goo-dolls is being proposed because their music is so difficult to define that it prevents them from fitting into many of the current music newsgroups. Posts in current music newsgroups have been unwelcome. There is no usenet newsgroup specific to the Goo Goo Dolls. We are interested in attracting fans worldwide and providing an active discussion forum for the Goo Goo Dolls. CHARTER: The scope of conversation of alt.music.goo-goo-dolls will include discussions of the Goo Goo Dolls' records, concerts, tours, merchandise, member's solo projects, outside projects and other topics related to the band. It will also address current news, rumors, fan club announcements, future events and bands that have a connection to the Goo Goo Dolls. Appropriate "nettiquette" is expected of all users of the group, alt.music.goo-goo-dolls; the behavior guidelines posted to news.announce.newusers and news.answers are explicitly included as part of the group's charter. -- Jonathan Grobe
