From fabfay@aol.com Thu Jul 30 01:44:22 1998 <> WOW! It's great to see a post about Robby for a change! Robby is an incredible talent! His style may be different from John's, but that's why it's so refreshing to hear the Goo Goo Dolls--their music is never boring! Thanks for the post! Fay From zipdrive@my-dejanews.com Thu Jul 30 06:06:00 1998 Thank you for these posts!!! We don't hear from Robby enough! I hope there are a lot of songs sung by Robby on the new CD...hopefully a single or two on the radio, too :*) Karen From mreiter@osf1.gmu.edu Thu Jul 30 09:15:08 1998 I totally agree. for the first half of their career, robby was the GGDs. He wrote and sang almost everything- which sat with me just fine. I still think Robby's contributions are truer to a sorta rock/punk kinda thing while Johnny's stuff sounds like a cross between metal and smooth jazz. i really wish someone at warners would show a little sack and put out one of robby's tunes. i thought everything he wrote on Boy was solid to great. and ya know, it can't be easy on the ego to live in the shadows of the band you formed. it's a real bummer to see the rhythm section tossed in the videos as filler. remember the "name" video for god's sake? you couldn't even tell robby was in the band. it was like, "who's the captain caveman looking fella on the bus?" i dunno. i'd like the shaggy one to get his propers. i got to meet/hang out with him a coupla times and he was really really cool. he took me on the bus, gave me a promo single and a press kit. he showed me their new gear and all kinds of spiffy stuff. then he introduced me to john who treated me like i was a jerk. which, of course, i am. rant over, mark From ptmcnee@aol.com Thu Jul 30 20:31:22 1998 Mark, That is great that you got to meet and hang with Robby!! He is very cool!! Johnny is too, but is more shy so tends to appear a little stand- offish sometimes, more serious or something. Robby seems more of the PR person and just wants to have fun! :) And don't forget Mike, he is great too!!! :))) When the Goo's are touring, you will notice that Robby and Johnny each sing about 50% of the songs, so Robby gets to share the limelight then. :) He seems to love being on stage! But I really think Warner should have taken a look at his songs from the Boy album and released them. Theresa From fabfay@aol.com Fri Jul 31 13:58:10 1998 Those who have followed the Goos for a while know how much time and energy Robby has contributed to the Goos. Mark was right with what he said about the early days. And it's sad that the very new fans know only about John because he's been showcased on recent videos. Even on the TV shows like Letterman, the camera rarely even pans to Robby and Mike. That's an incredible shame. It's about time we had a Robby hit on the radio--wouldn't that be unbelievably cool? Fay From mreiter@osf1.gmu.edu Fri Jul 31 15:18:19 1998 You know what I wonder? How long can Robby sustain under these stupid conditions? Johnny, who admittedly deserves a ton of credit, frequently responds to questions about the band with sentences that begin with "I." Hmmmmm. There's a bunch of "big" bands who'd be dern fortunate to have a frontman with Robby's energy and charisma. Character counts and Robby has it in spades. Plus, he's a great songwriter. He's got a real gift for hooks and keeping things simple... which is a task for some players. True, but I haven't heard Johnny respond to band questions with "I", but then again, I've missed out on many interviews recently. Johnny is not that cocky of a guy. Confident (when he has a reason to be, or wants to be), but not cocky. I've seen him be quite the opposite. I think he says "I" because he can only speak for himself, not put words in other people's mouths. >Character counts and Robby has > it in spades. Plus, he's a great songwriter. He's got a real gift for > hooks and keeping things simple... which is a task for some players. > Oh fuck yeah.... Robbie is AT LEAST as good as a songwriter as Johnny. Just check out "Lucky Star" (among dozens of other songs) to see why. (that wasn't directed to you, Mark C. Reiter, just to any newbies just reading this). Incredible songwriter. Johnny and Robbie don't write together all that much (as far as I know). They come up with those songs on their own, separately. It's SUPER rare to have two amazing songwriters in the same band! Yeah, you can say that the Rolling Stones have Jagger/Richards or the Beatles have Lennon/McCartney, but that's them writing TOGETHER. Johnny and Robbie write separately. And Johnny has TONS of character. So does Robbie. Don't know if you were discounting Johnny's character because the label picked his songs to market, but Johnny is really an amazingly real, cool person, just like Robbie.
