Not only is working with both Smashing Pumpkin Billy Corgan and Tricky on Manson's personal agenda, but now Manson is also entering the realm of the written word. Prepare thyself for an Apocalypse Now- like take on Ice T's social manifesto tome, The Ice Opinion. Don'tcha love the smell of the The New York Times' Best Seller list in the morning? "I'm writing an autobiography that'll be out before the end of the year," Manson says in his typical near- whisper. "I'm just telling a few stories I think people will be interested in hearing. I haven't quite decided yet, but whether it's a title of a chapter [or not], it's more than likely to be called The World Spreads Its Legs For Another Star." In Wednesday's interview with Manson, the shock rocker discusses the controversy that has surrounded his band's live shows. -Murray Engleheart ___________________________________________________ KORN LEAVES LOLLAPALOOZA DUE TO ILLNESS Lollapalooza mainstage act Korn is leaving the remainder of the tour after guitar player James "Munky" Schaffer was hospitalized and initially diagnosed with viral meningitis. Schaffer is currently under doctor's care while awaiting a complete diagnosis. Korn has not played on the tour since the Pittsburgh show on July 19. The second stage act Failure has been chosen to take over the opening slot on the main stage. According to a statement released by the band, Korn decided collectively to cancel the remainder of their Lollapalooza dates because they feel that there is no suitable replacement for Schaffer during his recuperation. Jonathan Davis, Korn's lead singer, says in the statement, "We love our fans, this is the last thing we want to do but it's the only decision to make at this time. It just doesn't feel right without Munky." The second leg of the Lollapalooza tour runs July 22-Aug. 18 with such mainstage acts as Julian & Damian Marley, James (all dates but June 28-29), Tricky, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Tool, Failure, Prodigy (only July 20-23 and July 29-Aug. 10), and The Orb (only Aug. 13-16), and such second stage acts as Pugs, Lost Boyz, Skeleton Key, Molly McGuire (only July 22-Aug. 8), and Orbit (only Aug. 3-16). -Tina Johnson ___________________________________________________ SEPTEMBER 67 PENS ANTI-PAVEMENT SONG 'I Want To Be Moved,' Explains Shannon Worrell Virginia- based duo September 67, which features singer/ songwriters Shannon Worrell and Kristin Asbury, may have committed indie rock suicide. The duo has penned what appears to be a pretty big diss to Pavement's Steven Malkmus, titled "Steve Malkmus Is A F**cking Snob," which will be issued as a promotional- only CD to radio stations in late August. (Then again, maybe this is justice, since Malkmus himself is notorious for dissing Smashing Pumpkins, Geddy Lee, and others in his songs.) The CD, which won't be released commercially, also includes live and studio versions of the title track and a live, previously unreleased song, "Teenage Electric." "What's Wrong With Alice" is also on the duo's debut album, Lucky Shoe, which was released on The Enclave. In a release issued by their publicist, Worrell explains, "We love Pavement, but they're not above reproach." The release goes on to say that Worrell feels that many indie rockers use irony in lieu of emotional honesty. "Irony seemed like a pretty good idea a few years ago. Now it's just smart people patting each other on the back. The song's kind of touch love, because I really love Pavement and I still believe in the premise of indie rock. I guess I wrote it because I love Pavement's music and wanted it to send me to another emotional level, but it never did. It was really upsetting to me; I almost felt manipulated and tricked somehow. I love their music so much, but I think they've become complacent in thinking that being smart and clever is enough. It's not enough. I want to be moved." Pavement's camp couldn't be reached a press time for comment. ___________________________________________________ SUGAR RAY'S MARK MCGRATH CHATS ABOUT "FLY"ING HIGH Band Kicks Off Headling Tour Wednesday One of the developing success stories of the year is San Diego's Sugar Ray, whose song "Fly," featuring Jamaican toaster Super Cat, is fast becoming the party rock anthem of the summer, a la Sublime's "What I Got" last year. Sugar Ray singer and confirmed madman Mark McGrath says the band, which begins a headlining U.S. club tour Wednesday (July 30) at Washington D.C.'s 9:30 Club with openers Smash Mouth and Plexi, is enjoying their newfound popularity. "We couldn't be in a better place," says McGrath. "I laugh at everything that's happening right now. We've been on the other end of the spectrum for a long time. We've even gotten our first tour bus." The band's second album, Floored, on Lava/ Atlantic, just went gold this week and is currently No. 27 on The Billboard 200, higher than any of the other bands on the Warped tour, which featured Sugar Ray through the July 25 New York date. Despite the success of their album, the band was forced to perform on the tiny third stage, playing before the local bands. However, McGrath says he made the most of the opportunities he found on the tour. "I'm the guy with the all-access pass who gets to go bother Social Distortion... sit on the stage and watch the Bosstones, watch Pennywise. I'm a fan. I put in my half- hour and play the show, but the best part of the day is when we're done and I get to go watch the other bands." McGrath's Warped Tour highlight, though, would have to be when he "played possum" during a storm at the Chicago show, at the end of "Fly." "All of a sudden this bolt of lightning came down right near the stage," he recalls. "I never miss an opportunity to be the big showman, so I hit the deck immediately. But some of the other guys in the band got hurt they got shocked by it. [Guitarist] Rodney [Sheppard] even burned his lips while he was singing. I laid on the ground after I took my dive, but when I saw people were seriously concerned, I got up and laughed about it, not knowing the other guys were hurt." Sugar Ray covers Iggy Pop's "Cold Metal" for the upcoming Pop tribute album, We Will Fall, due Sept. 16 on Royalty Records. The band will play The Late Show with David Letterman in early September, and kick off a European tour after their U.S. trek ends on Sept. 10 in Los Angeles. -Troy J. This week, the label has released a singles package in the U.K. and a limited edition EP, Summer Fun, and plans are underway for a home video, which will feature the group's trip to India. There are no plans for a U.S. release. Summer Sun is a six-song collection of some B-sides and songs that didn't make it onto their debut album, K. It includes: "GoKula," a song written with George Harrison; a different version of "Govinda" retitled "Govinda '97, Hari & St. George"; "Dance In Your Shadow," an acoustic ballad originally intended for K; "Raagy One (Waiting for Tomorrow)," which is based on an Indian raag that appears on the Japanese version of K; "Moonshine," and "Troubled Mind," which is Kula Shaker's first U.K. hit and the B-side to "Grateful When You're Dead." In addition, a home video is being planned, which will likely include footage of the group's visit to India and possibly their performance at Glastonbury this year, according to their official Web site at www.kulashaker.co.uk.
