GGD interviewed by Top Billing on Wednesday 22 March 2000 A magazine programme interviewed the Goos the day after their last show in South Africa. ( The interview was on a yacht in the city of Cape Town) Before I start let me tell you what the guys were wearing Mike: royal blue T-shirt, khaki cut-off cargo pants, black peak cap, white socks, black sneakers, black sunglasses John: black tank top(ooh baby!) light charcoal cut-off cargo pants, white socks, black sneakers, sunglasses with purplish lenses (later he put on a black denim jacket) Robby: black T-shirt, black jeans rolled up (legs EXTRA PALE lol!),barefoot (yeah!!!), sunglasses with yellow lenses (Why didn't they just wear their bathing costumes lol!) Charl - interviewer THE VOICE - commentry that appeared out of nowhere (They showed a piece of a radio interview the Goos had done so I will start with the DJ's last words) ....... Rockstars; love 'em or leave 'em! (Shows yacht pulling out of the harbour) ('Black Balloon' playing in the background) WE DECIDED TO LOVE 'EM AND TAKE THE ROCK TRIO OUT TO SEA. PERHAPS NOT THE BEST OPTION AFTER A HEAVY NIGHTS PARTYING. BUT AFTER MORE THAN 10 YEARS IN THE TRENCHES OF LOW BUDGET TOURING BEFORE MAKING IT - THEY ARE SURVIVORS. (Show a short clip of BB) (Shows yacht at sea and 2 dolphins jumping in the water) Charl: The GGD are a musical success story. With their hyperkinetic power-pop style they've pulled a cult following, a list of platinum hits and a substantial bank balance. We decided to put them to the test and see if they're really as tough as they make out to be. INITIALLY THEY CALLED THEMSELVES THE SEX MAGGOTS, BUT AFTER THE INSISTENCE OF A LOCAL PROMOTER, THEY REPLACED THE OFFENSIVE NAME. BUT WHY GO WITH GGD? (Clip of BB playing) Robby: No significance whatsoever (Some mumbling that I can't make out and laughing) John: No significance. It's just a ridiculous, silly, stupid name. (Laughs and shakes his head) Really. Mike (Woah!! He speaks!!): That we're stuck with for all time. Robby: It's like Earl, ya know. We were sorta born with it. Charl: You just woke up one morning and said 'Oh, GGD would be a good name for a band'? Robby: Yeah. No, we...we were sorta under pressure to...to find a name that we could use,so we didn't spend enough time and now, ya know,...here we are. (Short clip of 'Slide') Charl: How are you dealing with the...the success now? John: Just, ya know, workin' an aweful lot, that...that seems to be what's goin' on, lotsa work. But, er, ya know, it's nice. It's nice for peolple to hear your music and come and see you play. It's good. Charl (please forgive the stupid question this guy asks next): The music is still the most important thing for you? John (shrugs his shoulders): How could it not be, ya know. (Short clip of 'Slide') Charl: How do you get..uh...get along as a band? (As the camera moves over to Robby it catches a glimpse of Mike giving an adorable giggle) Robby: Well...ya know...You just, you learn...you learn to give people space when they need space and hang out when it's time to hang out, ya know. Uumm, ya know, we...John and I, ya know, in particular have been together for...an awful long time, so, ya know, and...and er, you gotta make sure that everybody's gettin' what they need and want,ya know, to keep things going. (Short clip of 'Dizzy') Charl: When you initi- initially started out, with the band, your music was much more of a...a heavy metal kind of mix. Robby: No, we didn't think so... (Show clip of Dizzy and it plays in the background while John speaks) John: It was more...it was more a weird cross between punk and...and ya know, New York Dolls (???) and yes, some metal influence. I always hated heavy metal, so I don't know why it wound up sounding like that. (Says something afterwards but I can't make it out. They all kind of laugh.) Robby: We just, we just sorta... everyone was using Vox's and Fender Twins (I have no idea???) and we were just using loud amps...is kinda what it was, ya know. (Short clip of 'Iris') THE POLISHED ACOUSTIC BALLADRY OF THEIR HIT 'IRIS' WAS IN COMPLETE CONTRAST TO THEIR ORIGINAL HARD ROCK SOUNDS. BUT IT BECAME A NUMBER 1 HIT AND THE MOST PLAYED SONG OF 1998 AS WELL AS EARNING 3 GRAMMY NOMINATIONS. ('Iris' clips play through the rest of the interview) John: Ya know, I was just looking for a writing assignment, 'cause I was just starting to try to get myself back into gear to write DUTG and...and then, uh...just came along...it was pretty cool. Charl: Nothing that...really happened? John: Not in my life, ya know, but in the life of, uh... Seth, ya know, uh, the guy in the movie, uh ya know, it's er, I mean it's a pretty common theme about him giving up his immortality to, uh, be with the woman he loved, ya know. And it's a really schmultzy, romantic, (giggles)...ya know, kind of thing. But it was nice. I like that crap (beeped out! Can you handle it?)...ya know, (giggles) I love all that...(laughs and says in deep voice) I like all that romantic crap (beeped again!) (Everbody laughs) Charl (please excuse the next idiotic comment): Oh, you're a romantic. That's...that's refreshing to hear. A rockstar being a romantic. John: Oh, ya know, yeah you know. (Robby and Mike are laughing. Omigosh! they are so adorable!!!) (Go to 'Iris' clips) ROMANCE ASIDE, THESE RUFFIANS ARE AS TOUGH AS THEY MADE OUT TO BE. NEXT ON THEIR AGENDA IS A LOT MORE INTENSIVE TOURING. FIRST TO EUROPE, THEN TO JAPAN AND FINALLY BACK TO THE UNITED STATES. The end (I hope you enjoyed that, but I wish you could see it! Sorry about all the detail, but I wanted you guys to get the feel of the interview as much as possible.)
