(Of course!! =o) And today I went to a Chinese restaurant here in the states and they started playing "Iris" (woo hoo!!) I ALSO sang along and my brother was just giving me strange looks. =o) Well,at this point you are probably bored,so I'll end it here.Hope everyone had an AWESOME New Year's !! =o) ~*Sky*~ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2000 18:48:02 -0600 To: goo@mailinglists.org From: Amanda F Nordman Subject: Broadway Message-ID: <20000104.185336.-856289.2.iLuvYodaAFN@juno.com> I'm new to the list and I need some help. I thought vh1 was pro-goo but after seeing all these catagories listed for grammies...its easy to see who THEY want to win. Santana i will give them. He has been in the industry for over 30 years, and to see him let Robbie from Third eyed blind join him (not the other way around) to introduce altin music to mainstream young listeners, to exsperiance where new bands have received their influences is great! Go Santana! However... showing a cluster of clips of the nominees in the begininng of the show, britnay spears was shown 4x out of maybe 10! The best female artist ( i think) only britnay and christina A was mentioned. Pretty smug considering they are nominees in the company of Madonna, Sara McLaughlin and Alanis Morisette. Sorry to dissappoint you girls that experiance rules in that kind of catagory. Look towards best new artist instead. After all you don't graduated when your in your freshman year. Second...They get 3 people from highly read magazines and what are their picks..rap artists and TLC! They had the audasity to mention limp bizkit and Eminem as a best rock performance??? Goo Goo dolls were never even mentioned out of their mouths. Again, 2 hits does not make a winner in the company of bands that have been around for many years like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Goo Goo Dolls and Garbage. Quick someone throw water on me !!!!!!!!! And whats this crap about mentioning the single Black Balloon even after John's troubles of writers block. Like they are taking shots at him or slipping sympathy to them. All I have to say is thank god these awards are voted on by the industry and NOT the public. I'm sorry , but I want credit given where credit is due. Not because they sold millions of dollars on t-shirts, lunchboxes, stickers, bookbinders and posters. I want to see the groups and artists who truely put their souls and experiances into music, played hard, worked hard, took the punches and made it on top in the end. Mark my words in 2 years no one will hear of BSB, N'Sync, Britnay, Christina A, Limp Bizkit, Eninem, or Kid Rock other than on .."Where are they now?" I know that Russell asked for my permission to post it when I was announced as the winner, but I was out of the country as many of you know and just got back today. Once again, I would like to thank Russell for this great idea and for making my xmas very Gooey!!! You are the best!!! WHAT THE GOO GOO DOLLS MEAN TO ME The Goo Goo Dolls to me have always been something more than just a rock band. I shall start by saying that being from Brazil, I never really had the oportunity to get most of the "collectibles", such as magazines, tv appearances or anything that they would be on. It saddened me. I remember that I first time heard "There you are," I was in junior high and I heard it on the car as my mom was driving me back home after school. As the first notes started to play, I instantly felt connected to the song. I took out a blank piece of paper and wrote down the name of the band...GOO GOO DOLLS. That weekend I went to the local store and asked if they could order import records for me from the US, in about 2 weeks I had in my possession a copy of Hold Me Up. It was funny because I was barely learning how to speak English and I used to try to get the lyrics and translate them to Portuguese so I could sing the songs along. Years went by and I continued to follow their work. The more I listened to them, the more and more that I felt attached and more involved in their music. It wasn't until 1995 that I first got to see what the banc actually looked like when I saw the David LEtterman show (the egg nog incident) and I fell in love with their simplicity and they good sense of humor..I mean, I didn't eve know that the hell EGG NOG WAS!!!! I guess if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't really know much about American culture. Through the years that followed, I began to find out more about the band. People in high school would come up to me when A Boy NAmed Goo came out and asking me if the same band that played "Name" was that band that I liked. I said "yes" feeling all proud of myself because around campus I was now known as the Goo Goo Girl. It was amazing. I have to confess, I hated people that would come up to me and tell me their favortite band was the GGD just because they had heard "Name" on the radio. I felt jealous because those people didn't know much about them and now because of one song it was their favorite band???!!!! I was really annoyed by that. One night, while listening to "We are the normal", I saw an image of myself in the future. I saw an empty road in the middle of a desert and saw myself standing there, in the middle of the road, with 2 suitcases on each hand. What was that image supposed to mean? After giving it thought, I realized that it probably meant that I was going on a journey and that I was going to be alone, but that I had to find myself. A few months later when I was applying to colleges I realized what that journey meant. I was going to go to college in the US and leave everything behind, my country, my family, my friends. I also relized that I loved music and that passion that I felt started since that day when I heard "There you are" in my radio. I decided to study print journalism here in boston and specify as a music reporter. I have graduated now and I have every reason to believe that the Goo Goo Dolls have had a huge influence in my life. I am a different person. I was scared to leave everything behind, but somehow I knew that they would always be there for me. Even if it was by listening to their music, I knew that I would never be alone. I saw them last year when they came to Boston and I couldn't help but cry all through "Dizzy" because it all seemed to surreal to me. I wanted to tell them that I owed so much to them. I owed them a chance to start a new life alone in a different country, that they were the reason why I chose to do what I want to do for the rest of my life. If it wasn;t for them, I might have never been a music reporter. If wasn't for that ONE song that I heard on the radio when I was in junior high, I don't think I would be where I am today. That is what the Goo Goo Dolls mean to me. Through their music, they have affected my life entirely. They have made me strive for my goals and make me do the best that I can. And everytime I hear one of their songs I am greatful for their influence in me....every time I hear one of their songs, somehow I transport myself to that time I heard the song in the car and my life has never been the same since. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2000 02:18:53 EST To: Goo@mailinglists.org From: IMagelo@aol.com Subject: I'm Back! VERY IMPORTANT. = Copy/ Paste/ add your name and pass on.. PLEASE On NPR's Morning Edition, Nina Totenberg reported that if the Supreme Court supports Congress to cut the budget of the National Endowment of the Arts, it is in effect the end of NEA. This situation creates great concerns about Congressional funding for creative arts in America, since NEA provides major support for NPR (National Public Radio), PBS (Public Broadcasting System), and numerous other creative and performing arts. If NEA is lost or weakened, our lives will be similarly diminished. In spite of the efforts of each station to reduce spending costs and streamline services, some government officials believe that the funding currently going to these programs is too large a portion of funding for something which is seen as not worthwhile. Currently, taxes from the general public for PBS equal $1.12 per person per year, and the National Endowment for the Arts equals $.64 a year. A January 1995 CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll indicated that 76% of Americans wish to keep funding for PBS, third only to national defense and law enforcement as the most valuable programs for federal funding. Each year, the Senate and House Appropriations committees each has 13 subcommittees with jurisdiction over many programs and agencies. Each subcommittee passes its own appropriation bill. The goal each year is to have each bill signed by the beginning of the fiscal year, which is October first. The only way that our representatives can be aware of the base of support for PBS and funding for these types of programs is by our making our voices heard. Please add your name to this list and forward it to friends who believe in favor of what this stands for. The full list will be forwarded to the President of the United States, the Vice President, and the Speaker of the House, whose office has in the past been the instigator of the action to cut funding to these worthwhile programs. This petition is being passed around the Internet. Please add your name to it so that funding can be maintained for the NEA, NPR, and PBS. THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO MAKE INTERNET TECHNOLOGY WORK AS A VOICE IN OUR DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM. IT'S EASIER THAN EVER TO MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD. Please keep the petition rolling. Sign your name and your state and city (ZIP CODE would be helpful also) to the list and forward it to others to sign. If you prefer not to sign, please send the list to the email address given below. This is being forwarded to numerous people at once to add their names to the petition. It won't matter if many people receive the same list, as the names are being managed. This is for anyone who thinks NPR and PBS deserve $1.12 per year of their taxes. If you sign, please forward the list to others. If not, please don't kill it ... send it on unsigned to others who might be friends of the arts. If you happen to be computer savvy and find that some signers have used the RESEND feature in their email program and it added characters to the text, if you are familiar with the SEARCH and REPLACE functions, please delete the characters so that the text stays clean and does not become unreadable. IMPORTANT **** If you happen to be the 100th signer of this petition, please forward it to: wein2688@blue.univnorthco.edu. This way we can keep track of the lists and organize them. Please forward this to everyone you believe might be interested. NOTE: It is preferable that you SELECT the entirety of this letter and then COPY it into a NEW outgoing message, rather than simply forwarding it. Once upon a time ^Ö back in 1995, to be exact ^Ö two well-meaning but naive young students at the University of Northern Colorado decided to express their concern over cuts in federal funding for the arts by starting an email petition. In their earnest Internet opus, they cited facts and figures concerning the costs of keeping the Public Broadcasting System and National Public Radio in business, raised the specter of Republican threats to cut funding for these programs, and asked recipients to "sign" the document by appending their names before forwarding it off to everyone they know. Unfortunately, several things were wrong with the whole idea: First, no one in any position of authority takes email petitions seriously. Electronic signatures are meaningless, no matter how many hundreds of thousands are collected. Second, the University of Northern Colorado was not pleased to find its email system deluged with responses to the students' unauthorized mailing. And finally, there was one little technical problem the students hadn't foreseen: they had no way to recall the petition once its purpose had been served. All this was painfully clear within two weeks of its launch, but it was too late. The beast had taken on a life of its own. Fast-forward to 1998, three years later. The petition has seen the inside of hundreds of thousands of modems, probably more. It has been repackaged by recipients in numerous inventive ways, most notoriously with the slogan: "Save Sesame Street!" Though perhaps successful at the outset in alerting a vast number of people to the right-wing threat against federal funding for the arts, it has long since stopped serving any useful purpose. Despite repeated pleas by the authors and the University for re-mailings to halt, the petition remains in wide, constant circulation to this day, all across the Internet and around the world. Message-ID: Hey all! I've got a dilemma...every time I try to download the "There You Are" video at Launch.com, AOL peforms an illegal operation. It's not the kind you can pull down and work around, it's the kind that duplicates itself when you pull it down, so you have to start aol up again. This has happened like 12 times over the last 2 days (I know, I'm persistent, but I love that song) and I'm getting pretty mad. Has anyone else had this problem? Are there any other sites out there where I can download that video? Thanks a bunch! *^*Amanda*^* Dizziness - get lost in all that is goo P.S. I'm still accepting answers for my question of the month: "What are you hoping for on the Goos' next album? Anything specifically similar to or different from 'Dizzy Up the Girl?'" Just e-mail me about it! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2000 16:59:33 -0500 (EST) To: goo@mailinglists.org From: twodaysinfeb@webtv.net (Kristyn VanOrden) Subject: Looking For and "Our List" Message-ID: <18336-3873BEC5-383@storefull-118.iap.bryant.webtv.net> Hey Guys, Well....there are a couple bootlegs that i used to have, but lent to someone...they moved and i never got them back!
