I'm sure you have all been anxiously awaiting to know the answer to the question of the hour: Am I or am I not Mike Malinin? Well, after careful deliberation, I have decided that it is indeed true. Yes, that's right, I am the same Mike Malinin that faithfully pounds the drums night after night on stage with John and Rob, bringing to all of you wonderful fans the live experience of everything that is Goo. I disguised my last name on this list so that I could remain hidden for as long as I possibly could, but I guess I couldn't keep my secret forever. ...And if you believe all that, I've got a nice bridge I'd like to sell you for the measly cost of $1 million dollars. Truth be told, I'm just a simple geek who happens to share the extremely common first name of our favorite drummer, and who happens to work at the same college that our other heroes (including Dave, who was actually in a class of mine) once attended. Although, it sure would be nice to swap places with him and make some decent money for a change. Sorry for the extreme sarcasm (and don't take it the wrong way - no mean-spiritedness was intended here), but hey, I had to have a little fun with this. I'll make an honest attempt to stop pissing my pants in laughter now. :) By the way, just to keep this post actually Goo-related, does anyone have MP3's of any B-sides or soundtrack tracks (Don't Change, I Wanna Destroy You, etc.) that they would be willing to send my way? If so, I'd appreciate it. This is from 1991. Goo Goo Dolls Thrash-happy power pop Looking back on `Jed,' their second album of thrash-packed pop and well-articulated rage, the Goo Goo Dolls are philosophical. ``That was a very angry record,'' says drummer George Tutuska. ``Whenever you embark on a creative endeavor, you're leaving a mark of where your emotions are at that moment. It's like leaving a photo scrapbook of yourself. But sometimes you look at those photos and say, `Oh, God.' '' For its third effort, Hold Me Up, the trio from Buffalo, New York, has traded anger for introspection. The sound remains the same, but the message is actually hopeful. ``I'm just a lot more comfortable with myself than I have been in my whole life,'' says singer-guitarist Johnny Rzeznik. ``You still have a lot of anxieties, but you kind of burn off that post-adolescent angst. That shows up in your work.'' But just because the band members are growing up doesn't mean their new record has to sound grown-up. Anchored by Tutuska's Neanderthal clubbing, the Goos reverberate like chain saws with a beat. The Goo Goo Dolls, in fact, are a throwback to the glory days of postpunk heroes like the Replacements and Husker Du -- bands that would wear their hearts on their sleeves if only their shirts weren't ripped to shreds. ``One of the biggest problems these days is there's no bands anymore,'' says singer-bassist Robby Takac. ``It's all projects and one-person efforts. It's just really aggressive Muzak.'' The band is so unwavering in its mission that it has twice used the ace Buffalo lounge crooner Lance Diamond for vocal chores. ``We tend to be kind of hedonistic when we're putting our records together, because, ultimately, we want pleasure out of it,'' says Rzeznik. ``Quite honestly, they don't pay us enough money to make an album that we don't want to listen to.'' -- CHRIS MUNDY ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 1999 18:31:31 EST To: goo@mailinglists.org From: LuckEBugg@aol.com Subject: Re: [GOO] January's futuristic question of the month! Maybe you guys already saw this, but they were re-capping the Fly2K thingy, and DJ Skribble was like "Then we caught up with the Goo Goo Dolls in London". Then they showed three of them with the winners. Then they moved to like a hotel lobby with John and Robby and that short, big-nosed guy from 98 Degrees (ew, they suck...sorry if you like them...hehehehe), and the guy had a beer in his hand and Johnny goes "Can I please see your ID?" and Mr. Big Nose goes "I'm getting carded by the Goos?" (or something to that effect). And Johnny goes "Hey, we're old guys, we can do that." Then they went on to some other 98 Degrees crap, so I lost interest. Anyway, I checked if they were gonna replay it later, but they're not. Sorry! It wasn't really worth wtching the whole crappy hour and a half of that show anyway. Also, Carson was counting down the results of the poll for who people were most looking forward to seeing there, and the goos weren't on the list. So I figured Carson would mention that they would be there, but he didn't say a word about them. Maybe that's just that stupid ass's way of snubbing them...sorry if you like Carson, but I really hate him after I went to TRL. But that's a whole other story. Anygoo, are they still gonna be there??????? What's up with all this confusion????? Also, 92.3 KROCK in NY is gonna be broadcasting the Goo's performance (along with Bush, No Doubt, and Blink) tomorrow starting at 9, I think. I know the time doesn't make sense, but that's what *both* Cane and Booker said. And about this Mike E-mail thing...how do you guys know that that was Mike? I have an extra Nylon Mag and also an extra Teen People Mag, but I so desperately need a Nov. issue of Performing Songwriter with the John interview. I would like to trade if at all possible, otherwise, I will accept what I paid for them which was $3 apiece. I also have ONE Billboard December 25 - January 1, 2000 Double issue magazine. This was $10. The Goo Goo Dolls are only on one page as far as I can tell (YE-100) for the top 40. There is a black and white pic (like one of their promo pics) and the categories in which they were in. The four categories that had songs or groups, our guys topped them all!! Just so you know, I also have a spare Guild Gallery. If you are interested in any of these, and you honestly don't have them, I will be willing to trade with you. But I am really looking for that Performing Songwriter... Thanks for reading, and have a happy and safe New Year!! Jenn __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Message-ID: <0.14b2cdfc.259d90b8@aol.com> i just thought i'd let everyone who gave me guitar buying advice know what i ended up getting. well i finally went shopping today and i started out with about eight different guitars and narrowed it down to three real quick - 2 Ibanaz and a Epiphone. i really liked this $400 Ibanaz but the other one was $200 and it sounded almost as good so i decided to get that. then for an amp i tried a couple but the nicest one was a Peavey (for the person who told me they are good, i agree!). this particular amp didn't have much for distortion so we went to look for a pedal. while we were looking this guy comes by and says "why do you have a guitar plugged into a bass amp?" that would explain the lack of distortion! but then i found this used marshall for $250 that was exactly what i wanted. i now know why everyone uses marshall, the sound is wonderful! it goes from this clean almost acoustic - electric sound to metallica crunch! now to make this slightly goo - related the first song i played on it was "long way down", one of my favorites and is sounded so good! sorry this is so long i'm just really excited. and thank you for all your help. ~Eva ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 1999 23:53:54 EST To: goo@mailinglists.org From: MarthaGoo@aol.com Subject: John looks like who?????? Milissa, I apologize yours was so late getting to the list. Brain melt, I guess, or I didn't cover up all of the blonde! I wrote Friday on the email you sent to me...DUH! Please send your birthday wishes directly to Milissa and Lindsay, and not to the whole list. My boss just sent me an IM, asking me how the Goo Goos are doing...he knows me too well. He asked me to send a hello to them, and to all of my friends that are in my "infamous red folder", which is the birthday calendar. So, from the General Sales Manager at Rudy Luther's Toyota...HELLO! Are there just small PICS in them or are there articles? I am starting to only want ones that have something relevant in them and not just small PICS. So if anyone can tell me about Twist and any others they are currently in, I would really appreciate it. I am still making copies of the 1st Release and 12/3/99 Buffalo concert for those who want them for $6.00 shipped. Will consider trades. As for the performance tonight, I think that I am not going to record it and just wait until it replays tomorrow so I can edit for commercials, etc. Is anyone else doing this? The way I understand it, though, is the Goo's will perform BEFORE 7:00 during the TRL Top 99 of '99 AND during the party that starts at 7:00 p.m. Carson keep saying that Goo's and 98 degrees will be performing *live* sometime during the countdown and also mentions them for the "2 Large" party. Since some of us will not be home from 7:00-12:30 (i.e. the time of MTV's 2largeparty), i was thinking that if the people who would be watching it at home could record the times that the goos came on, the ppl who didn't want to spend the whole 2AM-7:30AM trying to capture a glimpse of the goos would really appreciate knowing exactly when the goos would be on. ok that was a little confusing. lemme rephrase that: the people staying home on new years eve tell the list what time the goos come on so that the other ppl who missed it can record it later. lemme know what you think...if its unfair or not, but it would really help a lot of goobers out! hanly ~Scars are souvenirs you never lose~ ~I'd rather hang with drunks than hang out with myself, well the booze is over there take a glass off the shelf~ ~Words like fists that tear you down crash before they hit the ground~ ~I'll become what you became to me~ ~Sometimes the more you wonder why, the worse it seems to get~ ~Do you realize that humans are the only ones that kill their own species?~ Patch Adams ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Dec 1999 14:00:33 -0700 To: "Goo Goo Dolls" From: "Jill Goo" Subject: A possible gift for John?? I've known of the Goos since Name came out but until this year I didn'= t=20 know what kind of impact they had on me. Some people don't understand the=20 friendships people can make online. I made many friends online and those=20 friendships were strengthen from meeting some of you in person. Some of you= =20 I don't even know what you look like, but all of you are good friends to me.= =20 Matter a fact, I think many of you have became closer to me faster than many= =20 of my friends I had since I been living in the US. Even with some of the recent negativity on the list, I love the lists I'm on= .=20 There are times I get mad, there are time that I laugh so hard my stomach=20 hurts, and they are times I am touched that it makes me cry when I read=20 postings from the lists. That to me is what friendship is all about :) =20 Don't know ALL of you from the lists I'm on, but I just wanted to take this=20 opportunity to THANK YOU! Just like the Goos, you are angels to me! =20 Have a safe and wonderful New Year! See you in 2000'!
