I don't know the date excactly, but it is the new one that came out with kinda like a silver background color and it says something in the cover like "best of 1999". I was flipping through it and they have one section where they talk about musicians who took music lessons and there was a TINY LITTLE picture of John and captions saying how he took acordion lessons when he was 8 or 9. Just thought I's share. Now, I assume she's talking about Johnny, because women in general don't seem to think that Robby's the sexiest thing on earth (I, on the other hand, DO think so....so don't flame me telling me i said he was ugly...I don't, and never will, I love the guy to death). Which is a great response to almost ANY other question, um, except this one. It's sexy because John (and Rob and Mike too!) is sexy. Gotta say its Sexy Is As Sexy Does......just ask the BNT -- oh great, there I went and did it.....sorry, sorry, forget that utterance....cripes, I'm in for it now....but Alex told me he wanted one more plug for the band...... Also, people, remember to check Barnes and Noble (and maybe their website? I dunno..) for the Performing Songwriter mag. I got the last one that wasn't mangled by Xmas shopping mayhem at my store, or I'd get some for the list. But try your local B& N for your very own, it is worth it. I come in search of information on cover songs. Well, my friend and I are planning to start a little band and I was just wondering about using cover songs. A lot of bands in the bar scene use cover songs and I was going to ask this one group, Generation X, when I was out last- like if you had to get permission from the original artist, but I got a little too intoxicated and didn't know I was in the world by the end of the night. Anyway, to make this Goo related- I had planned on asking the Goos about this when I met them on the MP3 tour but all I could say when I saw them was, "uh....uh....uh.....uh...". I was really nervous and tounge-tied and forgot most everything I wanted to ask them I was so in awe. So if anyone has any info on the cover song process please email me privately and I don't post much, almost next to zero, so please don't flame my rear. Thanks. If your only intention is to play the song life, you do not need anyone's permission. If you want to record the song, you don't need to get anyone's permission, but, you do need to pay the publishing company (ASCAP, BMI, etc) 2 1/2 cents per copy of the album you manufacture. The only time you need permission (of the copyright owner, not necessarily of the artist) is if you want to release the cover song as a single. To do that, you do need to get permission of the owner of the copyright. One other part of your post caught my attention. . .Generation X??????????? In case anyone doesn't know, Generation X was Billy Idol's (who? LOL) first band, like two decades ago. Did he get the band back together, or, is someone else using that name now????? That would be very cool if Billy Idol has gone back to his punk rock roots. Any more questions, feel free to ask! Since they were asked for, here they are. Since Bryan had the list = changed, the link isn't on the bottom of the posts. Either follow the = link or read them all below. jOegOo joejr@pce.net http://members.tripod.com/~penberth/policy.html List Policies for the Goo Mail List on mailinglists.org=20 Well, now that the list is automated, and discussion is on the rise, = there is a need to put a set of guidelines in place. This was never a = problem before when the list was "hand forwarded," because the messages = were only forwarded once a day. This, of course, slowed down discussion, = and limited the number of messages each day. Well, now with the = opportunity to have 30+ messages per day, it is even more important that = we keep the messages focused on the task at hand, the Goo Goo Dolls. = Please read on: (Whether or not you read this, you will be responsible = for its contents if you wish to remain on the list.) Greetings! As a listowner for the Goo Goo Dolls Mail List -- I've = realized that a need for a set of guidelines would be beneficial to keep = the list focused. These policies are to be followed if you wish to = remain the list. They are mostly geared towards preventing unnecessary = wear and tear on the machines or to prevent unnecessary and pointless = flamewars. Willful violation of any of these policies will result in my = asking you to apologize to the list within a certain set time; failure = to do so will result in your banishment from the list. The URL for this = particular page will be available at all times via the list = message-footer.=20 ON MESSAGE RELEVANCE Okay, this has always been the big bugaboo. What defines what makes a = relevant list post?=20 Really, folks, I tend to take the simple approach on this. Why did you = subscribe to the list? Why, to talk about the band in question. That's = why we're all on the list. And as listmembers, we presume that the = discussion we're going to find on any particular list will relate to = that subject matter at hand. We all know this and should respect this.=20 What exactly can define relevance to any particular band? Well, here's = where things can get sticky, as I freely admit. Consider what earlier on = the list with the MTV Music Awards. Everyone was talking about how = excited they were about the Goo Goo Dolls being nominated for the City = of Angels movie. Then, somehow, the discussion drifts off of the topic = and we're talking about R & B / Backstreet Boys. Now, people are = disagreeing and tempers are flaring up. This just drives people away = from the list. You can talk about the R & B on other newsgroups and = forums. Therefore, such discussion should really go there, and not clog = up the Goo list!=20 Another addition to the relevance category would be one line posts. = Please do not post messages that say, "Welcome." or "Glad to have you = aboard" when some one posts that they are new to the list. This isn't = Wal-mart, so we don't have a greeter at the door. The problem with this = is that we have to much private mail floating around on the list. If you = want to welcome someone to the list, send it privately to them...200 = other people don't care to see it. Those are some particular examples. The lists are unmoderated, and I = will not approve every message sent; that would be a bother. But you = should always ask yourself, "Hey, is what I'm about to say going to be = of interest to the list as a whole?" Obviously, you can't read = everyone's mind collectively on this -- I often suggest lurking for a = bit and seeing how the general course of list discussion goes.=20 Relevance is very important regarding the differences in tastes we all = have. If you're on the Goo list, the one thing, the ONE thing you can = assume about everyone else is that they're all also interested in the = Goo Goo Dolls. To criticize or belittle someone else because of their = tastes beyond what a list is for is pretty gauche anyway, but to do it = via the list is beyond the pale. Don't do it.=20 If you'd like to talk with list folks about things not related to the = list subject at hand, then you are always welcome to post a one-off = message to see if there are others interested in this other thing, and = to ask them to write you back PRIVATELY. It's that simple. The same rule = applies to any polls you want to carry out -- if you'd like to survey = the list on something, okay, but clearly ask that all responses to such = polls be sent privately to you and not the list. Thanks!=20 Having said all this, one more note -- I tend to be much more watchful = of non-list subject threads. This is because the list is so busy already = that off-topic posts already add to a hefty daily mail load. Just a = note!=20 And one more thing as well -- it's just bad in general to write back = responses to a list message by quoting the whole message, especially if = it's really long, and simply adding, "I agree!" at the end. If you do = that, expect some private messages from me about it! It's a bad habit = you really want to break.=20 ON POLITENESS Essentially, this is the key thing about lists. As you're all aware one = way or another, the Net, while definitely a wonderfully free place, is = at times a place of sublime obnoxiousness, with insults and flames = flying hither and yon. Disagreement and differing opinions are wonderful = things; pointless insults and 'attitude' are not.=20 These lists are not your private insult playground. They are public = forums, unmoderated by myself, and you are always more than welcome to = say what you wish to say. However, starting -- OR continuing -- a = flamewar where you bring down the level of discourse to a series of = pointless insults between yourself and whoever else is out there is not = to be tolerated.=20 If you want to attack another person privately, hey, whatever turns you = on. I obviously do not nor cannot nor will not monitor private exchanges = between list members, and if certain people are attacking each other = behind the scenes, as it were, then that's your business. However, = turning such a private disagreement public is really bad. Even more = obnoxious is the posting of specifically private mail to a list -- that = is a clear violation of Netiquette, of trust, and much more besides. Do = not do this, period.=20 ON SOUND FILES, PICTURE FILES, CHAIN LETTERS, VIRUS WARNINGS AND = PROGRAMS Do not, do NOT, do not EVER post such attached files or letters to the = list you are on. It is that simple. Also, majordomo is set up to reject = any messages over a certain size limit. Why? There are many reasons. First, it slows down machine effectiveness = in delivering mail. But second and most critically, you are blowing out = mailboxes all over the world. Essentially, you are sending a huge file = to all the list members. Now, not all the list members have gigabytes of = spare memory space. They might even be charged by the amount of memory = messages take up. They could have slow modem connections which combined = with a program that doesn't allow you to halt delivery of a file could = mean literally hours of downloading time. Especially beautiful is when = you send around a file or program viewable only in a Windows or a Mac = environment -- meaning all of those using the other system will be stuck = with a useless file on top of everything else. Chain letters, while = nowhere near as hefty as a program can be, are still annoying clutter = under any name; personally I hold them on the same level as yer usual = sound files and the like in terms of worthiness and desirability.=20 As for virus warnings, after literally years' worth of warnings about = 'Good Times' and other similarly pseudo-viri which exist only to confuse = newcomers to the net and to annoy everyone else, I have yet to encounter = one such warning that was legitimate; it's very likely that'll be the = case with you too. Here's a tip -- if it talks about how the mere act of = reading a message will cause your hard drive to explode, or something = similar, then you're dealing with a message so bogus it makes The Weekly = World News and The Sun seem like the avatars of truth and enlightenment. = Don't forward them unless you want to tick everyone else off.=20 Do you wish to share a nice file or program? It is very simple -- do one = of two things. Either offer to send it privately to those who ask or = make it available for downloading via the Web. That's all you have to = do. Must you send a chain letter you are absolutely sure needs to be = sent? Contact me with the text of the letter and I'll suggest a more = appropriate place to send it -- even if it is somewhere like alt.spam. = Got a virus warning and feeling the fear? Write me with the text of it = and I'll tell you why you shouldn't worry.=20 Violation of this policy, unlike the other policies here, will result in = being IMMEDIATELY kicked off the list once I find out about it.=20 ON SUBSCRIBING AND MAJORDOMO AND ALL THAT With the improvements in majordomo that have now been carried out, lots = of past problems have been fixed. =20 If at any time you do have questions regarding the functions of = majordomo, or somehow have problems unsubscribing, you may always write = me directly at penberth@mindspring.com.=20 CONCLUDING THOUGHTS Future policy additions will appear as needed. Personally, I think the = less that needs to be said and remembered, the better!=20 ------=_NextPart_000_03AB_01BF4690.A48E7E20-- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1999 00:45:45 -0500 (EST) To: Goo@Mailinglists.org From: kagoo60@webtv.net (Karen) Subject: Performing Songwriter! This show lets us see a different side of John that=20 some people many not be aware of. Look at him, he was great! Did you see=20 him go on his knees and apologize b/c he couldn't pronounce that girl's last= =20 name? Or how he was blushing when that one lady danced for him while=20 everybody danced around Montel Jordan? (sorry I'm not good with names :P) =20 heehee. Some guys might act macho but he was being honest in my opinion. =20 That just makes him more adorable to me. PS: has anybody notice on VH1 site that they misspelled Johnny's last name=20 wrong? No wonder so many people misspell his name! MTV & VH1 post it like=20 that's how you spell it ::sigh:: Cathy's Thought #2 --This is for the Goo mailing list There is too much negativity on this list for the last few weeks (feel like=20 months) that it saddens me. I remember reading in a few posts that we shoul= d=20 be nice to each other especially due to the holiday season. I agree but thi= s=20 is something we should strive for everyday. And I stress "strive." We are=20 all human and we will occasionally blow up but I think some of you will agre= e=20 with me when I say that there are times that we blow up and we regret what w= e=20 say. That is what I hope to prevent here. There are people who continue to= =20 read angry postings and get upset and posts asking people to stop but some o= f=20 those postings are written in a negative tone that it doesn't resolve=20 anything. If you have a problem, PLEASE send your reply directly to that=20 individual. That is a problem between two individuals and everybody on the=20 list don't need to be involved. And a little advice. Something that has=20 helped me when I feel like posting something during a time of anger: If you=20 have AOL Instant messenger or Yahoo messenger, talk to a friend. They=20 usually help you get that frustration that you have inside out into the open= .=20 Especially friends who are on the list will understand your frustration whe= n=20 it's mailinglist-related. Many of us have one or the other and I know a lot= =20 of us talk to each other everyday thru either type of messengers. If you=20 don't have one of those, write a friend. Just say in the subject heading :=20 "I'M ANGER AND I NEED TO RELEASE!! >:(" and pour your frustration out. The=20 point is to let that anger out just in a more productive manner. Just a=20 suggestion. It's something that has helped me BIG TIME. In the time of Goo= =20 and non-goo-related dilemma, many of my GOOd friends from the list has helpe= d=20 me and I know many of you have friends just like that there to help you. Like the Goos, they, too, had the shittiest contract imaginable. The label basically wanted them to sign a 7 year, 7 album deal. My husband's band refused. Instead, they signed a one album deal with an option on the second release. Long story short, they didn't pay them as agreed, but Metal Blade finally settled after legal action was taken (they got back royalties, plus the copy rights to all their music). Not only that, but the label re-released all the old albums without even telling the band - all of a sudden they saw all their old albums advertised and on the intenet for sale (with no royalties coming in!) Even though MB did settle eventually, the fact remains that they do take advantage of these young kids trying to make it. Yes, they advance you all kinds of money and equipment, etc., custom made guitars and stage clothes. But in the end, the band gets screwed. I totally remember when the Goos were with MB. I have been watching The List for a long time and also saw the one where Kelly Martin voted Iris as one of her top three love songs. It got axed off before the final voting. Iris is one of the best love songs ever written but that's just my opinion. Can you imagine what it would be like to have someone give up everything just to be with you? I get tears in my eyes everytime I watch the movie. City Of Angels is now one of my favorite movies and it's not because of Iris. If you haven't seen it, watch it! All I did was yell at the TV. How those people can pick some of those groups is beyond me. I just wanted to say, though, each time I see John speak on TV, I am more and more impressed with him. He is so obviously intelligent, and apparently has good taste! Honestly, he is just a smart, classy guy. I really believe that. How many rock stars speak so intelligently? You can just tell he is a very well-rounded, knowledgeable person. Did anyone hear him laugh when he was reading off the top 10 or 12 or whatever it is, and he got to Bjork or whatever it is? I thought that was cool. I could tell he disagreed with a lot of the picks, and that made me happy! Hard as this may be to believe, there are performers other than the Goos playing in NYC on New Year's Eve. Billy Joel is playing Madison Square Garden, and Sting has been part of an overblown, overpriced, overhyped bash also starring folks like Aretha Franklin and Chuck Berry, I believe. The latter has been experiencing sluggish ticket sales, and has already been moved from its original venue to a smaller one--it wouldn't surprise me if what you heard "right" was news concerning that event. Message-ID: <19991215171557.6212.qmail@www61.linkexchange.com> hey everyone! wow it's been so long since i posted. i haven't gotten a chance to tell u all how the best night of my life went! i will try and shorten the story...just give u all the most important details, cuz i did write a 7 page typed review already! lol IF YOU'RE JUST INTERESTED IN THE POSTERS I HAVE TO TRADE, go down to the bottom... well i went to the san diego, CA show on nov. 18th. my parents had refused to let me go, all because it was on a school night, but there was no WAY i was missing it! i wrote myself a note to get out of school early, and got a ride from an internet buddy (i converted him to a loyal goo fan, hehe). we got there around 1pm. i went down to the back of the building where there was a parking lot with a bunch of tour busses. after inquiring i found out the goos weren't there yet. i waited around with about 5 or 6 other girls and women (and like NO security!) until their bus pulled in around 4:30. mike, nathan, robby, and john jumped out in that order and went into the building with a wave to us. the one security guard let us stay right by the doors and listen to their sound check. then johnny came back out, walked over to us and asked if we wanted him to sign stuff! he did then started jogging back to the busses but he still hadn't signed anything of mine. i chased after him a few steps and yelled his name and asked him to sign my shirt! he stopped and took my permanent marker and did! (oh my god, he touched me!) misty (also on this list) got a pic of him signing my shirt. then i went back to the line. we got searched (i got two cameras in one of which was a zoom one none the less) then went in the gym and it was general admission so i ran up right to the barricade in front of the stage. i was front row, dead center in front of johnny's mic! the goos performance started, and like two seconds after Dizzy started Johnny pointed at me and smiled! in the middle of the concert, i took out this crazy white sparkly punk wig that i had brought, and put it on. i took out a poster i had made too, and while i was unfolding it in front of me, john came over and watched me. then when i got it open he read it to the audience! "Johnny, wear my wig!" he said "ok, well give me your wig!" lol, and i handed it to him and he put it on and started talking about crazy hair (i don't remember exactly what he said) then sang a song with it on! i was going totally NUTS! the security guards were even nice enough not to take away my camera when i snapped two pics of johnny w/ my wig on RIGHT in front of them. he finished singing then came back up to me and asked if i wanted it back or if he got to keep it. i shouted that he could keep it if he wanted. there was a guy next to me and johnny was like, "no, i know u want it back so u can go home and make your boyfriend there wear it for you!" i was like, no he's not my boyfriend! lol! he tossed it back to me, and got on w/ the concert. during one of robby's songs, i was going nuts again (it's impossible not to at a goo show!) and like reaching over the barricade towards him. he made eye contact with me, and for a few seconds he leaned over towards me busting out on his bass, and gave me this hillarious expression! during Naked, john made eye contact w/ me again and i reached out towards him and he smiled and pointed at me. one time during the concert it was sooooooo funny. robby was barefoot as usual, and he went up to the edge of the stage in front of him where this security guy was standing, but facing the audience, not the stage. robby snuck up and put his bare foot on the guy's head!!! the security guy jumped and was like, "what the HECK?!" robby and the whole audience started cracking up, and then robby appologized to the security guard. it was HILLARIOUS! well after the show i went out to the tour busses again (this time there was a lot of people down there and the bus was surrounded by a barricade and lots of security). i got right up front and was able to see all the goos run from the back door of the building to their bus. i got a pic of johnny w/ the last pic on my camera, but its kinda far away. i got home a little later that i was hoping. my parents found out that i had gone and were furious and really upset. they took down all the pictures from my walls (i had them PLASTERED) and confiscated my autographed shirt, my two rolls of photos from the concert (i haven't even SEEN them yet), all my videos w/ tv appearances, bootleg concerts, and music videos, my stack of guild gallery magazines and a couple other ones, the shirt and stickers that i had bought at the concert, my ticket stub, and probably other stuff i can't think of right now. i ended up getting my "wallpaper" and ticket stub back, but my mom says i don't get the other stuff back until i go to college (which will be in sept. of '00) excluding the photos i took which i don't get til i'm 24...i really hope that's an exaggeration.... i also got my aol account taken away. the only time i can go online now is at school during computer class or lunch time. my parents don't know i switched to a hotmail (and yahoo, u can email me at dreamrthts@yahoo.com too) address because they said i'm forbidden to use email now. but i can't just cut myself off completely, not right after meeting so many new friends at the concert and getting so much great info on this list! I gave up soooooooooo much to go to that concert and meet johnny, but it was worth it! TOTALY worth it! dreams really can come true, i believe it now! ok, onto the trading stuff....i have an extra cardboard (not flimsy paper like most posters) mp3 tour poster w/ the goos on it, the promo goo poster with the black and pink background with the 3 guys standing together in a hallway and it's a little wrinkled but laminated to it still looks nice, and also an extra one of the posters that comes with the australian import of black balloon and that one is even laminated too. i am looking for a goo beanie more than anything. i was debating getting one at the concert, but now i'm glad i didn't cuz it would have been confiscated w/ the rest of my stuff. so if anyone can help me out here i would love to hear from u! i am also looking for the goo poster with johnny squatting down in front i think, and robby and mike behind him. have a great day everyone! -diana ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1999 12:50:07 EST To: goo@mailinglists.org From: Kirbyq@aol.com Subject: revamp Message-ID: <0.298af950.25892ecf@aol.com> Hey all....I just thought I'd let yall know that I've revamped my goo webpage! Anyway, I was almost asleep, when I heard this "ba ba badadada..." (that's my rendition of the intro to "Dizzy", if you didn't pick up on that. It's much better when I'm doing air-guitar jam sessions with johnny...hehehe). So I sat bolt upright in bed, and it was a commercial for DUTG. At first I thought it was for like Sam Goody, or Tower Records, but it was just for the album, not a store. Anyway, I thought it was cool. They had clips from Iris, Dizzy, Slide and Black Balloon. So watch out for it, they might play it again sometime..... However I do have several issues from Dec/Jan with the small mp3.com article that talks about the concert at E. Lansing and it has a nice photo of john. It also says that they were voted "the best crowd pleaser of the year" because John returned the favor of baring his chest to an overly enthusiastic female fan. (I went to both concerts so I thought that was cool!) anyway if you want a copy of the Dec/Jan issue this is what you can do to get it. Send me an envelope (big enough for a mag) with 2 stamps on it. Put your mailing address on the front of it and I will send it to you. so you will be paying less than a buck for a mag... not a lot of info but its a good item for collectors like myself. You don't have to email me to tell me you are doing so but make sure you send the envelope within the next 2 weeks or so. My address is B.Hinkley PO BOX 3129 Grand Rapids, MI 49501 Thanks, Becka P.S. Well, I haven't posted in a while...thought I'd steer clear of all the "controversies," as I call them. But someone recently asked and I thought this might help: TV APPEARANCES: Thursday, December 16: Goo Goo Dolls: Behind the Music, 9 PM EST, VH1 Thursday, December 16: The List, 7 PM and 11 PM EST, VH1 Friday, December 17: The List, 7 PM and 11 PM EST, VH1 Saturday, December 18: Top 90s of the 90s, 4 PM EST, VH1 Sunday, December 19: The List, 10:30 AM EST, VH1 Sunday, December 20: 9 Days that Rocked the 90s, 5:30 PM EST, MTV Wednesday, December 22: The Rock Show (w/ the Dizzy video), 11:30 PM EST, VH1 Friday, December 31: MTV's Millenium Bash in Times Square, 7 PM EST, MTV Saturday, January 1: MTV's Millenium Bash in Times Square, 1 AM EST, MTV Saturday, January 1: MTV's Millenium Bash in Times Square, 9 AM EST, MTV Sunday, January 2: 9 Days that Rocked the 90s, 4 PM EST, MTV Sometime in early January: Sesame Street, PBS (That's right from my site, I always post the appearances I find out about.) Now I don't know when the Goos will play on the Millenium Bash, but if you miss taping it the first time, they're showing it twice on New Years' Day, so... (well that's if we're all alive...I think we will be though, I forsee a lot of "5..4..3..2..1...What? We're still here? And the power's on? Maaan, just another new year." Also, I'm still accepting answers to this month's question: What would you do if you saw the Goo Goo Dolls walking down the street? Would you wave? Mob them? Dart between moving traffic? Be too shy to approach them? Just e-mail me! And thanks to everyone who has answered already! If you've got any concert pics, encounters, or reviews, I'm looking for those too! Thanks a lot and have a GOOd holiday everyone, *^*Amanda*^* http://www.gurlpages.com/music/goo-goo-girl ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1999 20:40:21 -0500 To: "dorlook" From: Sheri.Marcus@jwt.com cc: JSgoogirl2@aol.com, goo@mailinglists.org Subject: Re: [GOO] mp3 cd's Message-ID: <85256849.000A15C6.00@usam05.na.jwt.com> hi there- i'm not sure if you guys figured out your problem yet, but if you are trying to play mp3s on a regular cd player it wont work. you can play them on your computer with an mp3 audio program, or with an mp3 player. good luck, sheri "dorlook" on 12/10/99 06:45:19 PM To: JSgoogirl2@aol.com, goo@mailinglists.org cc: (bcc: Sheri Marcus/Det/J Walter Thompson) Subject: Re: [GOO] mp3 cd's Yes, I am having the same problem. I e-mailed the address on the cd cover MTCD@mp3.com . I'm waiting for a reply from them. Does anyone have any ideas about why we are getting this error ? It sounds like it can't read the cd. I cleaned the cd and my cd-rom, but I'm still getting the error on the matt_start file.
