Okay, the program stunk. Don't take my word for it; I have transcribed it to the best of my ability for those of you who missed it. Here Goes: VH1 - The List The Panel: Illyana Doulgas (Ignorant actress who somehow managed to land the hosting gig, though no one quite knows why) James Brown (Doesn't say much, nominates his own song, but still remains cool) Ana Gasteyer (Ignorant comedienne from SNL) Jimmy Pardo (Annoying short comedian) Kellie Martin (Very cool actress on e.r.) :::Panel gives their top three choices, number 3, then 2, then 1, for Best Love Song of All Time in a round-robin format. Kellie Martin is the last to go:::::: Illyana: Kellie, what is your third choice? Kellie: I chose "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls because it's so mournful (applause for choice) and beautiful (more cheering) and because the lead singer is so HOT that you just watch the video and you fall in love with him... (Iris starts to play on the video screen)...Johnny...look at him, he's beautiful! I know he wears make-up, but I like it. Illyana: I don't think that's, like, a love song, though. I mean, it's a good song, it's just not a love song. Ana G: Is it about Iris? From the Goo Goo Doll guy? Jimmy: What? Ana G: I don't know that song that well. [okay, this woman must live in a cave --V] Kellie: I don't know what Iris means, but-- Jimmy: (interrupting) Isn't it a piece of your eye? (laughs) I liked their follow-up "Retina." And the B-side "Cornea?" (more morons laugh) :::::they move on to other songs. When they recap what they chose, Iris gets a big applause, with a few boos mixed in. Then, when they get to the part where they remove songs from the list on a big board, that is composed of everyone's top three choices, Iris gets bumped off second, by Ana, who said she was "sorry to do it." The audience finally picks some James Brown song, and I'm sorry, but I didn't pay any attention to which one it was. I was still fuming::::: That was pretty much the show. I think we should get together and send mass emails to Kellie Martin's manager, telling him to thank Kellie for sticking up for the Goos against a sea of ignorance and bad taste. She will forever be cool in my book, just as the other panelists will be entered as new voodoo dolls in my next torture ceremony. ;P Sorry the post is so long, but I thought some of you would be interested in the b.s. that went on in that show....don't even bother to watch the rest of the week. How quickly they forget the Artist of the Month.....and remember, these people on The List picked "When Doves Cry" as the Best Rock Song of All Time. Sheesh! When they opened a few shows for us (The Replacements), we got really drunk one night and just coated the stage with all kinds of sicky pass stickers. Sticky side up. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. 'Course, we WERE pretty drunk. Johnny talked about that in the booklet to our All For Nothing CD booklet, but I thought you'd like to hear the explanation straight from the horse's mouth. We were drunk, plain and simple." Message-ID: <37FAD60F.4530@sprintmail.com> Hey all. I was listening at work and I heard Black Balloon in a promo for 90210. I know someoby has metioned it but they said it was for Party of Five. Nope, it was 90210! Also, my friend finall saw part of the black Ballon vid. She said she thought the shiny black stuff behind Johnny (what I think looks like a trash bag) was cool and the video was cool as well. And finally, I meant to post this last week but didn't get around to it. On the 80's lunch platter (a 3 hour thingy they do daily with retro music), I heard the orginal version of "A million miles away." Never even heard the original before. i was shocked they played it because they always play the 80's staples. ("video killed the radio star," "she blinded me with sciene," "mickey," etc.) Anyways, I just to say I like the goo's version much better. There's is more rocking and I just like Johnny's vocals better! -- "Look I gotta go yeah I'm running outta change. There's a lot of things if I could I'd rearrange." U2- "The Fly" "I'm in the black, can't see or be seen, baby, baby, baby light my way." U2 - "Ultraviolet (Light my Way)" "Cause all we are is what we're told and most of that's been lies. I'm not doing a concert review because aside from not having time, & being exhausted, I honestly don't have the desire to. I will say that from skimming a few concert reviews from the previous tour, it sounds exactly the same. I had read on the ticketmaster website that the technology fair thing started at 3. My 9 year old niece was the one to go with me & she refused to go to it, but we did drive by it later & it looked pretty dead. Hardly anyone listening to the band. For those of you taking young kids, check the scene out first...no chairs at this one. On to Goo...concert start time of 8:30...doors opened about 7:45. We had just enough time to buy tshirts, wait in line for the bathroom & just find our seats when Fern started at 8. They sang maybe 5 or so songs...they seemed pretty cool to me. Not as energetic as the Goos, but oh well. Tonic was up next, sang about 9 songs, great audience reaction. About half an hour later at 10, the goos came on. We bolted for the door as soon as they were done & I think we were in the car about 11:45. Instead of risking getting yelled at, I'm going to make my disclaimer & say that this is how it was for THIS show. It definitely might not be the same for yours, but I'm just trying to offer a bit of info so y'all have a general idea. For those of you considering taking the youngins....it seemed to work okay with my 9 year old niece. Just a few things though. With the show not starting until late, she was beyond exhausted by the end. Our show was not general admission, we were in stadium-type seating that is inclined, which helped her see a LOT better through Fern & Tonic. Once the Goo's came out though, everyone stood through the whole show, so your child could very well not be able to see a thing. Luckily, she was able to see most of the time. Downside...an exhausted child isn't going to stand for almost 2 hours. And please, be VERY careful if you have seating on the floor. The singer for Fern told all the girls to come right up to the stage & the gathering increased as the night progressed. Most of the floor was right up by the stage. No moshing really with the chairs in the way, but you still don't really want a kid in that mess, not to mention they won't be able to see ANYthing unless they are lucky enough to be held up. PLEASE, don't e-mail me asking what the setlist was, what the show was like or what John was wearing! I will NOT respond. If you have a LEGIT question or comment though, chances are I will do my best to respond. --LilAngel27@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Oct 1999 01:39:44 -0700 (PDT) To: goo@mailinglists.org From: Rachael Cavalieri Subject: Re: [goo] 10/5 Iowa City show Message-ID: <19991006083944.12965.rocketmail@web604.mail.yahoo.com> hey goobers... since the set list for the opening show wasn't posted yet... i'll do the honors... guess what?!?! they played "Cuz You're Gone", complete with the interlude- "A Thousand Words". This is just a little note about the Goos show on Halloween. They are doing a special show in Atlanta at the Swiss Hotel in connection with a local radio station, (like you didn't know that all ready). If you go to www.star94.com, they have a short description of the event. You have to be caller number 14 and you win 4 passes to the concert/Halloween party. So best of luck to everyone. They've been playing for small club audiences in the area (such as here in KC) for the past couple of years. Well, I guess I just answered my own question by looking at the http://tour.mp3.com/ page. It *is* the same band I'm thinking of. And it looks like they're on all the dates through Oct. 20. If you're going to any of these shows, give Fern a chance! I've always thought they could go places. Ah, see? I'm getting better about posting - no longer five posts a day, just one big one every now and then (partially because I am absolutley SWAMPED with homework!!) lol It really doesn't seem like teachers realize how much homework they give... Anygoo, i'm REALLY slow about reading my mail, and i just read about someone who heard the goos at the dentist. Here's an idea for those of you who haven't thought about it yet - a while ago when i had to get a cavity filled (eep!) i bought a tape of the goos to listen to, and my dentist had a walkman i could listen to! So i turned it up *really* loud and I could hardly hear the drill or the other stuff he was doing, it was just all goo! If you close your eyes, you can hardly notice your there sometimes ;)(lol, i wish!) And a week or so ago when i my brother was getting his tux fitted for his grad in a few weeks, the store was really quiet and kinda fancy but it had the radio playing and (yipee!) i heard black balloon come on! So was running around the store trying to find the speakers, then when i did i stood in the middle of the room singing along with it! lol I don't think the saleslady thought i was all there, but it was the goos! And then after the song was over the radio guy said something like 'And that was the trio from Buffalo - the Goo Goo Dolls with their latest release, Black Balloon! And a happy belated birthday to band member Robby Takac who celebrated his 35th birthday a while ago!' I was pretty impressed with my radio station, not only because they prnounced Robby's last name right, but because they new about his b-day! And they're also beggining to play more goo - this is really rare for me, but i heard iris, slide, and bb on the radio in one day :) (and i just heard name a few minutes ago!!) Yea my radio station!! And i remember something someone posted a long time ago about at his radio station they played a lot of goo, and the dj guy recently 'discovered' the goos and he ended off once by saying 'To hell with the play list - i can program it! hahaha!' then played laughing by the goos! As insane as this sounds, could that guy write me? I think you know who you are, and i was wondering about the dj guy - is he still into the goos? On another subject, i've finally made some new goo fans out of some of my friends! My brother now has the goos as his second fav band (can't beat Bon Jovi to him), and two of my friends that i am going to visit this weekend have the goos as one of their fav bands now too! They really like all of their music - i have four goo cds and they love all it! (especially some of the stuff on the first release, lol! and one of them is dying to get sscw after all the blabbing i've done about it ;) But both of them like Silverchair best, and i was wondering, have the goos ever done anything with silverchair? I really doubt it, but they'd LOVE it if they did ;) (my friends i mean, they'd love it if they found out the goos and silverchair had some type of connection, or even mentioned each other) DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO ON THE GOOS FAN CLUB?????? (i think that about covers THAT!) And just a few words on this teeny bopper business (coming from a 14 year old, mind you, so some of you might just wanna ignore what i have to say right now - sorry) At first i was really hurt by that comment, why does it matter how old you are?? I think we all know about Jared, whos five, and i think he's just one of the coolest goo fans out there!! (yea jared and jared's mom!!) And as i mentioned to Traci before, if you think of teenagers as being 'stupid' (ugh, i hate that word) or 'useless', you're succombing to the stereo type of us! And if you go around saying these things about teenagers, how do you think it's affecting their self esteem?? It's like you build up these stereo types, then believe that all teenagers are like what you think they are, then some of them become like that because you've built them up to be like it. Sorry for babbling on about that, but ANYthing about sterotypes just itches that eqaul-rights-y nerve in me ;) And as i told you (i think) i got that 'the dream' poster for john (which turns out to be 20 x 16 and mounted on wood = BIG) and i was wondering if anyone of you (and this would REALLY help me out) new where to send it, or how far in advance i should send it (a venue would be okay as long as it's for SURE that'd he'd get it, i'd hate to spend all that money and put this much effort into it all for nothing). I'm in eastern canada (newfoundland) btw Okay - WOW this is long!! Sorry!!! I just had a lot to say ;) That happens sometimes! So is this whole reply thing over with (please god)?? Pete is kinda one of the guys that's in charge of setting up the stage stuff. if you've ever watched the set change between the opening band and the Goos, Pete's the guy that is always making sure Mike's drums are tuned up and set up correctly. anyway, the guard went in and gave Pete the message, and sure enough, about 10 minutes later, he comes out to say hi to us. we chatted for awhile, about the tour and stuff. they all seem real excited for this leg of the tour, and definitely enjoyed the last leg. i asked Pete what was the plan for after New Years Eve, and he said as far as he knew, there was none. so the rumor that the tour might go on till March may be incorrect. we chatted with Pete and several of the other crew guys (including the guitar techs, Dean and Damage) for awhile, then Mike came out of the tour bus, wearing his running shorts and shoes... i said "hi" to him as he passed us. then, a few minutes later, John appeared! said hi to him, and asked him if he remembered me. he was like, "hmmm..." and i told him that my name was Rachael and i was from Omaha, NE. and he said "Oh! you're the girl that came up onstage with me to tell the Name story! how are you? what are you doing here?" and i said, "well, my friend and i drove four hours to come see you guys, and we're driving straight back as soon as the show's over, cuz we have class tomorrow morning!" John said, "no shit? i should give you 20 bucks for gas, then!" and Lindsey and i laughed and i said, "no way... but maybe can i get a picture later?" (he was on his way to the grocery store) he said, "sure. see ya later!" so he left. all the roadies made fun of me after he left, cuz i was so excited. and they were like, "you should've made him take one now! when he comes back he'll be in a hurry and won't have time and your dreams will be crushed!" i was just like, "no way, i'll get a picture, don't worry!" then, Lindsey and i saw Nathan come out from the arena to have a cigarette. so we went over to him and i asked him if i could get a picture with him. he said sure. so Lindsey took a picture of us and then i asked Nathan how his vacation went, and then about the set list for the evening. i asked him if they were going to play anything they hadn't yet so far on the DUTG tour off of SSCW. i was like, maybe Domino or So Far Away?? **i'm ever hopeful for those songs** Nathan was like, "oh, i was pulling for Domino this time around, but we're not going to do it. i'd love to do String of Lies, too... but we're going to do a special surprise one. but i'm not going to tell you what it is... but you're going to love it." and i immediately started guessing, starting with We Are the Normal. he made a face and said, "nah, we did that once last leg, and it sucked. the problem with that song is when you play it live/acoustic, it sounds kinda like Naked. so we don't usually do it." he told me not to guess anymore cuz he didn't want to tell me, he wanted it to be a surprise. so i asked him if they were playing All Eyes on Me, another fave of mine i've never heard live. but Nathan said they don't do that one live cuz its really complicated and its hard to figure out all the seperate guitar parts and to format it for live playing. so they can't do it live. :( then we chatted about the VH1 BBQ, and about the last Rosie appearance. he said that Rosie is really really nice. and we also talked about the Dick Clark New Years eve thing, and how he was going to to have to play (he said they are going to play two songs) on the top of a building, in the freezing New York weather! eventually, Nathan had to go back in... we must've chatted for like 15 minutes, it was cool of him to talk to us. then Mike came back from his run a little later, but i didn't bug him since i knew he probably just wanted to go change. i did ask him if he had a nice run, though. he said he did, he got to run on the track and it was great, and that the weather was perfect! so Lindsey and i just hung out for a little longer, then John came back from the store. he was carrying a couple of (plastic) grocery bags, and i asked him if i could get a quick picture now. he said "sure!" and gave his bags to the girl that had driven him to the store and then pulled me over to him and put his arm around my waist. so i wrapped my arms around him, kinda like hugging him from the side, and Lindsey (i love this girl, she's such a great friend!) took the picture. it was funny, right before she took the picture, as i'm standing there with John's arm around me, i just said "oh, my God..." really softly and squeezed him just a little tighter. he laughed and squeezed back. then, after the picture was done and we let each other go, i thanked him for the picture, and he grabbed my hand and said, "thank you! its nice to see you again!" and he held my hand as he walked away. Lindsey said it would've made a great picture, had she thought to get it a second sooner. but i was happy. so, after that we decided to go back to the front of the arena since it was dark and starting to get a bit chilly. the show was awesome, Fern was really good, Tonic was great, i love their music. the Goos put on an awesome show, and as i mentioned earlier, the surprise song was Cuz You're Gone, with A Thousand Words. i was probably the only one, at least from where i was sitting, jumping up and down, SCREAMING, as they went into A Thousand Words. make that jumping up and down, jamming through every song... it was awesome. John talked to the audience a lot, told the "walk of shame" story, among other college jokes, plus the audience participation before Just the Way You Are. the set list was as follows, not necessarily in exact order. dizzy long way down lazy eye slide full forever there you are black balloon bulletproof naked name cuz you're gone/thousand words january friend broadway another second time around flat top acoustic #3 iris just the way you are burnin up hate this place two days in february that's it! hope you enjoyed my looooong story. i'll have my (two) pictures developed soon... i'll keep ya updated. Message-ID: <0.c89ed64e.252d6860@aol.com> Hola, Okay, I'm proabaly gonna get called a teeny-bopper for this, but I'm in desperate need of some advice. I'm a junior (high school), and the junior formal is on November 12. I really wanna go,but I don't know if I'm gonna be asked. My school is really small (85 people in my grade), so that totally limits my options. I don't know if I should a) wait for someone to ask me; b) ask someone; c) not go at all; or d) go stag (ugh, gross). Now, my first choice would be to ask someone, but I'm really quiet and shy, so it would be really scary for me to just go up to some guy and ask him to the junior formal like it's no big deal. There's this one guy who I think would ask me, but he's really shy. Even though he's kinda the class clown, whenever he talks to me, he falls or trips or stutters. It's actually kinda cute :) Anyway, the relationship I have with him is kinda strange. Starting last October, he would call me by my full name (first and last, and my last name is hyphenated, so it's REALLY long) whenever he saw me. Seriously, he would scream it at the top of his lungs and then chase me down the hall. After 2 months of this, people started telling me he liked me, and he too hinted at it a couple times. Just to give you an idea of his retartedness, here's what he did on the last day of school: I was walking to my friend's house, up a hill, and he and 2 of his friends drove by me and leaned out the windows screaming my name. Then they turned around and did it again. They kept turning around and coming back,at least 10 times, then they left. Anyway, over the summer, he cooled down, and he's only yelled my name at me like 4 times since school started a month ago. So, I don't know if I should wait for him to ask me, which he might not, because he might not like me anymore, and I'm too shy to ask him if he does. ARGH!!!! I HATE THIS!!!! I really don't know what to do, so anyone who has any suggestions, TELL ME!!! Especially if you've already gone through this sh*t. THANK YOU IF YOU'VE GOTTEN THIS FAR!!! In case anyone is interested in an audio of the Goo's at the Hultsfred Festival in Sweden on June 17 of this year, I am making copies of it. It's a great show, directly off the radio so it's excellent quality as well. The set list is: 1. Dizzy 2. Long Way Down 3. Lazy Eye 4. Slide 5. Girl Right Next To Me 6. Full Forever 7. Naked 8. January Friend 9. Black Balloon 10. Bullet Proof 11. Broadway 12. Iris 13. Hate This Place And no, I didn't forget to type Name, they didn't play it in case anyone noticed. The easiest way to do it, is that you send me a blank tape (60 or 90 minutes) plus $10. I have put it on CD as well if you want a CD copy instead, but then you'll have to send me blank CD. If you are interested in a copy email me at dizzy_noise@yahoo.com with Hultsfred audio in the subject line. Thanks for reading. When Cathy and I were on our way to a Goo Concert, it was a four hour trip that turned out to be around eight hours. We kind of got lost :) Then my stereo blew a fuse, so we finally found some dude in Kansas to fix it, cuz we were not going any further without listening to the Goo CDs. It was so hot that day, and everything was going wrong, but we toughed it out. Plus, I got heat exhaustion at the concert and the paramedics wanted me to go to the hospital, but I told them I was there to see the Goos, and after missing the first twenty minutes, fighting with security to let me get back to the concert, we got very good seats, and ROCKED!! So, sick or not..I was NOT missing the Goos!!! Jenny from New Orleans, LA and is 16 today! Happy sweet 16!!! Her email is JSgoogirl2@aol.com. Here's here anecdotes: 1. wait 4 hours before a concert to see them get there for soundcheck 2. force my dad to drive 2 hours to get to a concert and he did this twice 3, i now have a wall of goo in my bedroom 4. i was nice to my sister and her slave for a week to get one tiny picture of them from her nickelodean magazine 5. while singing to "slide" i beat my head on the wall when john sings "your father hit the wall.." and had a huge welp for weeks, and i had to look like a unicorn! 2.) Another happy sweet sixteen goes to Brianna!!! She's from Tucson, AZ. You can email her at brianna10883@yahoo.com. Here's how she answered my question: The craziest thing I have ever done for my goo obbsession would be um, well besides searching every record store for months to collect all 6 albums and have enough posters to wallpaper my room, I snuck into the Desert Sky Pavillion with friends when the Goos went there. I caught them during an interview for MTV. We got caught right after they thanked me for giving them an elmo doll with wings (like aguardian angel) that I had made them. 3.) And finally, a very happy birthday to Chandi, who is turning 15 today. She's from Calgary, Alberta, Canada! She can be reached at: chgatt@home.com. "The craziest thing would be my binder for school... you can't see it because it's got goo goo doll pictures all over it... and the not so great ones are overlapped... it's quite lovely... and inspirational for exams and quizzes and such..." Lol, has anyone ever heard that thing about how yellow actually stimulates your mind? One of my teachers used to give us tests which were printed on yellow paper. But anyways, back to my point, maybe scientists should do a study to determine pictures of which band stimulates your mind the most....of COURSE it would be the GOOS!!! lol ok, i'm outta here....just got a bunch of goo stuff on video to watch! wish them all a happy birthday! -diana ~"Hold on dreamaway"~ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Oct 1999 17:21:30 -0600 To: From: "ADDIE COLE" Subject: Totally off subject, 'Roswell' Message-ID: <00c101bf11e3$de701900$bc869cd1@roncole> ------=_NextPart_000_00BE_01BF11B1.90C24E80 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable OK, this is the most off subject that you can get!
