Hey there Caity, A press kit can really mean a lot of things. In general, it is usually just a small folder with a photo or two, and a bio of the band that record labels send to radio stations or other insider types to introduce a band, or to announce a new album. Some press kits can include more than that thought, cds, videos, other nifty promo items and stuff. In general, they are not available to the public, so, they are always somewhat collectable, but, before shelling out a bunch of money for one, be sure to find out what it includes. Most likely, you'll end up with a 8 x 10 glossy and a band bio, in a label folder. Any other questions, feel free to ask Russell ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Dec 1999 23:37:06 GMT To: goo@mailinglists.org From: "Sonya_PoloniaGoo_ Rzeznik" Subject: Re: [GOO]Guitar Pick Colors Message-ID: <19991211233706.7105.qmail@hotmail.com> Sorry to complain but i really agree with the last person who stated this, What does it matter what color picks they use? Okay, so far two people that I know of have asked for a copy of J-14. There are two pictures of Johnny. The pictures do *not* cover the full page. The pictures are in a collage sort of thing along with Blink 182 & Sugar Ray. If anyone else wants a copy, please e-mail THEBLACKBALLOON@AOL.COM *NOT* THEBLACKBALLOON@YAHOO.COM Even the two who already asked, it would be convienent if you e-mailed me as well for a confirmation. You might want to check Wal-Mart first before you e-mail me though. Thats where I got my copy. When I looked my local Wal-Mart, there were 9 copies left. I'm sorry but I'm not aloud to send the magazines first, you have to send me the money before I buy a copy for you. I'm asking for $2.90 (cost for the magazine) + $0.75 (envelope) + $1.25 (estimated cost of shipping) for a total of: $4.90. Before you ask me to get a copy, I encourage you to look at local magazine stores so you wont have to go through all of this (now wouldn't it suck if I sent ya a copy and then you find that the magazine is at a local store?!). Please e-mail TheBlackBalloon@aol.com ASAP so I can e-mail you my address so you can send the money. The sooner the better. If there aren't enough copies for everyone, I *WILL* send your money back. It's typed WORD for WORD..although, I had to add comas and stuff in it, cuz even though it was a very good article, the writer didn't know punctuation rules very well:) JED Goo Goo Dolls JED Johnny-guitar Robbie-bass and vocals George-drums It was the winter of '86-'87 and on a sidewalk in the city of Buffalo, three young men stand in the rain sharing laughs and pondering life with just enough money between them to buy a six-pack.... Meet George, a drummer,.... no he's more like a personality with a drum kit and Johnny, borrowed guitars on borrowed time, Then there's Robbie, a black haired bare foot bass player. Three angles with dirty faces and a desire to infuse sincerity into a pop medium built on too much hype and too much hair spray. A reckless recording session followed by a fateful trip to old New York driven by the spirit of the Ramones but directed by the sight of Ray Charles, leads to an even more reckless recording deal. The key catch words were important, immediate, and release. The three Dolls learned all too quickly the nature of the business when 'immediately' turned into four months later. When you're promised silver, expect tin. It was the summer of '87, still broke and still smiling, a car destroyed Johnny's arm and all playing was shelved for too many months and too much time off. An October showcase at the CMJ convention proved disastrous. The sound was shut off and George proceeded to outdistance one of Keith Moon's greatest drum tosses. It was a fine achievement not appreciated by the club's security. They decided to rearrange George's eye socket, fracturing a cheekbone, and teach him a lesson on dance club etiquette. Trying to find the line between self-expression and self-destruction, the Goo Goo Dolls made January of '88 a time to create. Jed is brought to life, born of fear, anger, disgust and broken homes. In the end the truth is found in self-acceptance alone. Soon after the phone ties were severed with a leach of a label and three wise lads followed the brightest star and drove westward bearing the gift of song. The Word spread and momentum gained in their crusade across America. Their desperate frenzy attacked the audience, converting the apathetic who soon sang their praise. In their wake, one company stood apart, determined to pin down these elusive souls prepared to deliver the message of Jed. ......Somewhere in the city of Buffalo, three young men sit in the sun sharing laughs, pondering life with the concerted agreement that a twelve is definitely in order. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Dec 1999 21:49:09 MST To: goo@mailinglists.org From: "Lisa Smith" Subject: um....i don't have one? And then I started thinking, "Why do I get so excited?" I think it's because I know that a bunch of other people are hearing it at the same time as me, and probably getting just as excited about it. There's something about sharing your favorite band with people that is just...really cool. :) Earlier I was at the Goo Goo Dolls official site (I hadn't been there before, guys! Can you believe it?) And my dad walked by and I was like, "Daddy! It's the Goo Goo Dolls!! Aren't they cute?" He just laughed and mumbled something like, "yes, honey." Well, all fathers want to please their little girls I suppose... A couple of weeks ago my friend Heather went to Boston because her grandpa died and while there she met her cousin's girlfriend, who likes the Goo Goo Dolls. Heather said, "My best friend Lisa LOVES the goo goo dolls!" And the girl was like, "Really? Is it because of the goo goo? I think that's so funny." Heather's all, "Uh...no." We make fun of that girl like every day now. LOL If you're still reading this, you're a real trouper!!! :) Love Always, ~Lisa~ AIM: FetishaChica (Feel free to IM me!!) It's a big book of pictures of rock stars. It retails for about $35 at Barnes & Noble. It's a pretty large picture. If you're going to buy the book just for the picture of John, you're a freak. The book is full of many other great pictures, although the book is put together rather tacky. I love photography and photography books and I've seen a lot better books, presentation-wise. We live in Chicago and we just got back from giving care packages with sweat suits, t-shirts, socks, hats, gloves and mcdonald's gift certificates to people who live in boxes under lower Wacker Drive in Chicago. It was a great experience and they were so happy to get them. The reason I'm saying this is the Goos have many organizations they support and it would be nice during this holiday season for the people on the list to remember these organizations. Just a thought. It was completely silent and all of a sudden I burst out, "I wish the Goo Goo Dolls were coming back here again!" My parents just look at me and are like, "What?" Then they laughed at me. You know, this seems to be happening to me a lot. I don't know what the problem is, but for some reason I'm just like, "Duh...I'm blonde." I feel really dumb guys, you don't even know. And....I know there is something else. Oh yes. The station I listen to here, 107.7 The End, is doing a contest to see what the best 1,077 songs of the Millennium are, and then they're going to play them in order on New Year's Eve or something. I'm not sure. But if you go to www.1077theend.com they have a list of all the songs they've played in the 90's (so maybe it's just of the decade, I'm not sure. wait, decade, century...which one is 10 years?) and then you vote for your top 10 songs. And they have a whole bunch of Goo. So if any of you Seattle-ites (or people who live in other places for that matter) want to vote, go to their website and do it! I'd love to hear the Goos on the countdown. :) Love Always, ~Lisa~ AIM: FetishaChica (Feel free to IM me) "Sitting on your sofa, eating Baskin-Robbins/Thinking maybe you're the one..." - Peter Parker "It's not cool to sue your friend" - Ryan Shuck ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 02:31:36 +0800 To: "Tiffany Njoo Soen Kuei" , "Stephan Davis" , "Priya" , "Muhaimin" , "melissa" , "liping" , "Liang Yan" , "Khairin" , "Josephine" , , "goolist" , "Dashayani Sharell De Silva" , "damien" , "cutlet" , , "cc-list" , "azahar" , "Anthony" , "Angela Tan" From: "M00NDOGS" Subject: The X-Mas Files Message-ID: <002201bf44cf$28f495a0$32b015a5@oemcomputer> good stuff, read on...and merry christmas in advance:) > > ---------------------------------- > The X-Mass Files > ---------------------------------- > > We're too late! I was reading the Rolling Stone special photo issue Dec 16-23,1999) and they have this section called "The Year in Recordings" and the Goos weren't mentioned at all...I though, okay, I am mad, but I guess I'd understand if people have different taste than me. Then I keep reading and there is another section called "The Year in Singles" and the Goos weren't there either. That REALLY pissed me off. I mean, what about all the singles that they've put out...and what about "Iris!!!!". Wasn't that song like, the most played song played from a soundtrack? I am really bitter. No offense, but they even had LFO "Summer girls" on that list and that particular song wasn't played nearly as much as "Iris"...just my opinion. Now, the last thing I want people to do, is fail their finals just to play my little game (if you are going to fail finals, it should be because of too much partying, like everyone else). But, I also want to be fair to everyone who has worked their plans and schedules around the contest dates that I originally posted. I've been asked to extend the contest just a bit. . .to make it end Friday, not Tuesday. I am going to leave that up to all of you, my lovely friends who are participating in the contest. Please e-mail me privately, and let me know if you'd prefer the contest to be extended until Friday, or, still want it to end on Tuesday. I will base my decision on what kind of responses I get. I know a lot of people have worked really hard on it, based on my original rules, and, I don't want to change those rules without everyone's opinions. Again, please write me privately with your responses! And, just to let you know, I've gotten two entries back, neither have had all 20 questions correct. Remember, take your time, and have fun, there is no bonus for getting it in early, and no penalty for getting it in at the last minute. Obviously, this person, Amy Linden, is not a Goo fan and she does not have good taste in music. Peace DJ Goo Goo Dolls "DIZZY UP THE GIRL" Reviewed by Amy Linden Over the course of their ten year plus, six CD career, the Goo Goo Dolls have juggled two separate songwriting personas. The top 10 hits have come courtesy of guitarist/singer Johnny Rzeznik who fashions power ballads that straddle the gulf between high school prom and VH-1, e.g. the lush single "Iris," which also appeared on the City of Angels soundtrack. When he is on point and keeps the metaphors and the angst to a minimum, as on the jangly "Slide", Rzenik can crank out tight, catchy tracks. Yet over the years, and particularly since the breakthrough success of "Name," Rzenik has exhibited a "serious" songwriter side, obviously influenced by the far superior musings of Paul Westerberg. When Rzenik overreaches (the trite "Broadway"), his shortcomings and tendency to repeat himself become obvious. The yin to Rzenik's yang, bassist/singer Robbie Takac aims for the cheaper seats, churning out scrappy, efficient three chord pop/punk (the buzz saw "January Friend") that's closer to the Goo's punk rock roots. Admittedly the Goos are not breaking any creative ground: their push and pull between poetics and grit is a tamer, more girl friendly version of what Westerberg and the Replacements achieved in the mid 80's. Yet even though they haven't reached 'voice of a generation' status (and probably won't, either), the Goos still have enough heart and punk/pop ethos to keep them from being too corny.
