I don't know if anyone else thinks the way I do, but when I heard about John hosting -The List -my brain did it's usual input and the output landed me a direct line to the ticket provider for the audiences. Everyone was really nice and helpful incase we ever need to contact them in the future, but unfortunately, John taped last week, but I could easily get tickets to any other taping! Douglas got his way. The Motion Picture Association of America agreed to a PG-13 rating. ``Diamonds'' is a comedy about three generations of men on an adventure in the Nevada desert. The movie is set to open Jan. 21. ``I like to be mocked,'' explained John Malkovich during interviews to promote the movie ``Being John Malkovich.'' Still, he was initially leery about making the film. He first heard about the script from Francis Ford Coppola. Malkovich, who was born on Dec. 9, 1953, was concerned the script ``crossed the line'' - the line being invasion of privacy - but decided to go ahead. He liked how the movie made fun of him, adding: ``If I would have said no, A.) it would run the risk of being for the wrong reasons, really, and B.) it would have meant this really original, kind of inventive thing not being done.'' Singer Donny Osmond began performing professionally when he was 5. He says his life is a ``survival story'' - a story of ``how I got through all of those years of the high pressure of show business.'' But, he adds: ``I had parents who were so supportive, I have a wife who is so supportive, I've gotten through it.'' Last year, he teamed up with his sister Marie Osmond for ``Donny & Marie,'' a syndicated daytime entertainment-talk show. The show is now in its second season. Osmond, who was born Dec. 9, 1957, is the author of ``Life Is Just What You Make It: My Story So Far.'' In the book, Osmond reveals his battle with social phobia, a debilitating anxiety disorder that threatened his career. Celebrity birthdays Dec. 5-11: Dec. 5: Singer Little Richard is 67. So every time a little self-pitty rises up in me, I take 2 minutes, to think about all the GOOd things in my life, and it really does help conquer the "Feeling sorry for myself demon" LOL!!! First let me say, I've had a LOT of personal requests for people for me to give or sell the copy of the Goo's first CD to them, instead of having a contest. To everyone who asked, I am sorry, that just wouldn't be fair. I've already announced that I am going to give it away in a contest of some sorts, I can't take that back now. But, everyone without one, will have an equal chance in the contest. If I had a copy I could give to everyone who needed it, I would, but, hey, I don't. I've heard that it is going to be reissued (yet again) sometime in '00, so, just be patient. Now, as for the contest. Without a doubt, the BEST suggestion I got was from Jenn, a Goo themed Scavenger Hunt! I think that is an absolutely FANTASTIC idea, but, I really can't think of a way to do it. I couldn't ask you to gather goo related stuff, then, mail it to me, that would be too expensive for those who want to play. I wish I could think of an easy, inexpensive way to make that work, but, alas, I don't think it is meant to be. The majority of the suggestions involved a trivia contest. I think that is the best, most fair way to do it. Just because you aren't a goo info sponge, don't worry. MOST of the answers to the questions will be easy enough to find, if you know where to look. And, amazingly enough, I'll tell you where to look. When ever I have a goo question, there are always three places I know I can go to get my answers: Alex, Fay and Joe's websights. You'll find most of the trivia answers here: http://www.musicfanclubs.org/googoodolls/ http://www.boyleworks.com/fabfay/googoodolls.html http://www.pce.net/joeh/ These three sights are INVALUABLE resources! Virtually all your goo questions can be answered there. Since, I know most people don't sit at their computers 24/7, it is NOT going to be a first correct trivia test wins kinda thing. I want everyone to have a chance. What I will do, is, on December 7th, I will post a list of 20 questions to the mailing list. Some will be easy, some will be hard, some will be very hard, but all will be Goo related. I will accept entries until December 14th. There is no "bonus" for getting your test in first. The first one I get back will be completely equal to the last one I get back (on or before December 14th). Since there is a very good chance that more than one person will get all 20 questions correct (you better! after all, I've told you where to get the answers!), there will be a 21st, tie breaker question. A small paragraph, no minimum or maximum amount of words, about why YOU should be the one to get the CD. I am not looking for any specific answers. . .just be honest and, I'll make my decision from there. On December 15th, I'll announce the winner to the list, and to the winner him/herself. I want to get the CD in the mail to you that day, so you get it in time for Christmas, so if you wanna play, you MUST include your full name, and mailing address with your quiz!!! Sound fair to everyone? No? Too bad! It's my CD, and that is how it is gonna work! LOL. And, by the way, if you wanna bypass the whole contest thing, the Bea Arthur pictures will make you an instant winner. LOL Again, please, no more personal requests for the CD, save that for you 21st question. All such requests will be ignored. Finally, I gotta trust you, so, if you already own the first CD, please, do not play. Have yourselves a Gooey little Christmas! Well last night I went to the 12-1 show. It was great! Not without some hitches, though. They were CAMERA NAZIS! My gosh they were so mean about it too. Needless to say, they took our cameras. I was SO mad..we would've gotten some GREAT pics, since we were sitting fourth row center! We turned in our toys and got our autographed pics. During the show, John complained again about his hand like on all 3 tv appearances on Nov. 29 (lol) and said that this wasn't the Backstreet Boys so they couldn't use a stamp. I didn't meet any list people. :o( Well, I saw Joe H a few times but I was too shy to go up and say hello. And I wouldn't have recognized anyone else, so I guess I couldn't expect to meet anyone else! The opening band, Scott Carpenter and the Real Mcoys, wasn't bad, but they were kinda, well, country rock! Between the bands, the techies did a dance for us and got some cheers..LoL. They played that GooGooaLoo song, but it took me a while to figure out that that's what they were playing! It was cute, though! For all who care, John was wearing black leather pants and a black kinda 3/4 length shirt. Robby was wearing black pants, a kinda bowling-style black shirt, and white socks (no shoes, of course) that were black on the bottoms by the end of the show! I don't know what Mike was wearing, he was So Far Away! They started with Dizzy, and John yelled and pointed at everyone who was sitting to stand up. They sounded great, but I was a little disappointed in the crowd. When I looked behind me I saw some people that were really into it (like me) but a lot of people that looked like they were just standing there! The people in the row in front of me were about to kill each other. This girl kept keeping back these two guys from throwing punches..that was a little distracting..Geez, the Goos aren't freaking Aerosmith! (like John said at another concert.) Also, the people in the private boxes looked drunk enough to fall over the edge...and there were a few women that seemed more interested in giving the security guards private dances! Most of them were forced back to their seats! I felt really bad for a few other women who had the same tickets for the same seats as a group of guys. We let one of them stand in our row..we borrowed her binoculars...REAL close up of John! LoL! My sister asked every security guard she could find to see if she could get a set list, and she got Robby's afterwards! (along with 2 picks!) There was a footprint on it, but it rubbed off! However, there's still a smudge mark, maybe it's from Robby's socks! Here it is: Dizzy Long Way Down Lazy Eye Slide Fallin' Down Full Forever Black Balloon Bullet Proof Naked Name January Friend Cuz Yer Gone Broadway Another Second Time Around Flat Top Acoustic #3 Iris Just The Way You Are Burnin' Up Hate this Place Two Days in February They talked quite a bit. John introduced Lazy Eye by saying that it was from a movie called "Batman Sucks," that did badly at the box office, but the song's cool. He also told the Name Story. I especially liked the part where he played the chords of Name with the "cleanup in aisle 7" and "pricecheck on 4" in between. While he was talking about the letter he got, a girl yelled "I love you Johnny" and he said "I love you too... I'm getting a lump in my throat..geez, I'm trying to be sarcastic here!" Then there was the extended Ricky Martin joke...his impersonation of Ricky Martin was hysterical! Robby mentioned that he had Mighty Taco that day..(which is exclusive in Buffalo.) :) They seemed happy to be here! Robby looked like he was having SO much fun..you couldn't look at him without smiling! "A Thousand Words" was really cool! Very powerful! John introduced Mike by saying "this guy's been looking at my ass for 5 years.." :oP We had 4 signs, and Robby noticed the one that said "Hold Us Up, We're Dizzy." We tried forever to get John to notice them. He almost NEVER looks up!! But finally he noticed the one that said "Happy Birthday John" and smiled and pointed at us! My sister was so excited! After the show, we had to wait a half hour for our ride, so we went around to a backstage entrance and stood with some other fans. Nathan and some techies had come out the door, so we were hoping. A techie told the girls that the Goos would be out later, but they never did come out (or at least we left before they did). Well, all in all, it was great! I'm feeling a little concert letdown, but I'm still in a GOOd mood! As for the site updates, I've recently added John's biography and some other stuff. (I update almost every day!) Please visit my site, Dizziness, at http://www.gurlpages.com/music/goo-goo-girl . I'm currently thinking of a new question of the month and when I do (and sort through all this mail), I'll post it. *^*Amanda*^* ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Dec 1999 16:57:49 EST To: Lindagoo2@aol.com, goo@mailinglists.org From: Lindagoo2@aol.com Subject: Re: [GOO] Goos on the WEDG Live broadcast! (goo song just came on the radio - "only one" - this is the second goo song in half an hour!) robby looked good too - black pants and shirt, and socks. i love his hair, it's reddish and looked great. i couldn't see mike to well becuase the speaker blocked him but he had on shorts and a t-shirt. dave was wearing black and looked like his usual happy self. nathan could be from a metal band with his black hair and clothes. (another goo song - slide!) john sounded awesome, his voice was really good. and robby got his turn in the front and he was wonderful as well of course. they are so energetic on stage - they are all over the front of the stage, and they go down into the audience every couple songs. john was flirting with the girls of course (damnit, if i'd been a little closer!). i'm a guitar player, and what i though was really cool was i could actually see the chords john was playing. i'm thinking, "wow, i can play that song, the same way john does" (although not nearly as good of course!) the crowd was excellent - everyone was singing, and there was no pushing or anything. i got a couple of pics even though cameras are not allowed. i was actually kind of sad when they got to acoustic #3 becuase i knew it would be over soon. then during iris they did something that was really cool. of course it's john's song, and robby stays in the back for the first part of the song. but intentionally or deliberately someone put a reddish stage light on robby. since there was only one other light on then, it looked really cool. and during the solo nathan FINALLY came up the front of the stage so i could get a good look at him. then they played this video, which to be honest i really didn't get, something about greed. but then i was really light headed by from singing and the noise so maybe it did make sense. then they came back out for the encore, starting with hate this place. during the song they dropped confetti and the roadie was chasing the guys around the stage with a leaf blower and blowing their hair around. then robby did burning up and then they finished with two days in february and threw their guitars into the screen on the back of the stage. everyone is screaming, and then the lights came back on and it was over ::sniff, sniff:: i didn't want to leave goo world. well lucky me on the way out i ran into the people from the box who are awesome. well now my radio is playing a live version of black balloon, and it is just awesome. i know this is off topic, but i want to thank my radio station 103.3 the EGDE for supporting the goos for so many years. but tv, radio, it just can't compare to our guys live. i mean their act is so entertaining, but it's not at all gimicky which i love. if you've never seen them, next time they come near you GO, skip work, school, whatever! i'm sorry i'm getting this out late, but my computer kicked me off line last night around 2 and i lost the whole review. if anyone has any more questions or just wants to talk, you can IM me if you want, my SN is eva753 or email me. ~Eva ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Dec 1999 18:19:02 EST To: goo@mailinglists.org From: Kirbyq@aol.com Subject: there is going to be a live album! I hope you all were able to catch it, but if not here's a few details. He did say they were recording their performance tonight, and the dj asked if they were going to do a live record. John basically said maybe. I think it was one of those, "we aren't ruling out the possibility" kind of things. He also talked about the List and said that two of the topics he hosted were greatest rock movie and best rebel song or something like that. Jen FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TIME WARNER BUSINESSES REPORT RECORD THIRD QUARTER EBITA Growth Of 49% Cable Networks, Publishing, And Cable All Post Record Third Quarters Net Income Improves To $369 Million Earnings Per Share Improves To $.28 NEW YORK, Oct. 13, 1999--Time Warner Inc. (Time Warner, NYSE: TWX) reported record operating income before amortization of intangible assets (EBITA) of $1.608 billion, up 49%, on revenues of $6.723 billion for the third quarter of 1999. This compares to EBITA of $1.082 billion on revenues of $6.593 billion for the same period in 1998. Revenues grew 3% and EBITA grew 9% when normalized principally for the effects of certain cable-related transactions in 1999 and 1998. In the quarter, Cable Networks, Publishing, and Cable all posted records. This quarter is the first in which the results of Time Warner Entertainment Company, L.P. (TWE) have been consolidated with Time Warner Inc. For the first nine months of 1999, Time Warner reported record EBITA of $4.879 billion, up 58%, on revenues of $19.345 billion versus $3.094 billion of EBITA on revenues of $18.977 billion for the same period a year ago. Revenues grew 5% and EBITA grew 15% for the nine-month period when normalized principally for the effects of certain significant transactions in 1999 and 1998. Cable Networks, Publishing, Filmed Entertainment, and Cable all posted records for the nine-month period. Below are EBITA results for the third quarter and nine months (in millions): (1) To enhance comparability, prior period information has been provided on a "pro forma" consolidated basis that retroactively reflects Time Warner's consolidation of the Entertainment Group, which substantially consists of TWE. (2) 1999 nine-month results include a net pretax gain of approximately $215 million recognized in the first quarter in connection with the early termination and settlement of a long-term video distribution agreement. (3) Third-quarter results include net pretax gains of $477 million in 1999 and $6 million in 1998 related to the sale or exchange of various cable television systems and investments. Similarly, nine-month results include net pretax gains of $1.248 billion in 1999 and $90 million in 1998. Commenting on the company's performance, Time Warner's Chairman and CEO Gerald M. Levin said, "I am pleased again with the record quarterly results at the Turner networks, HBO, Time Inc., Warner Bros., and Time Warner Cable. Our performance is keeping us on track to deliver the record results we have expected for 1999. Importantly, the termination in August of MediaOne's governance rights over TWE benefits the ongoing management of our cable business as well as allows us to simplify our reporting structure by consolidating TWE's financial results. Together with our emphasis on Time Warner's fundamental values, we have the right people, assets, and financial capacity to lead the media and entertainment industry into the new millennium." The comparability of Time Warner's pretax income is affected by certain significant and nonrecurring net pretax gains recognized in each period. These items include a gain in 1999 from the early termination of a long-term video distribution agreement, net gains in 1999 and 1998 relating to the sale or exchange of cable television systems and investments, and a gain in 1999 relating to the initial public offering of a 20% interest in Time Warner Telecom. For the third quarter, these nonrecurring gains amounted to $477 million in 1999, compared to $6 million in 1998. For the nine months, these nonrecurring gains amounted to $1.578 billion in 1999, compared to $90 million in 1998. For the third quarter, Time Warner reported net income of $369 million in 1999 after an extraordinary loss of $12 million on the retirement of debt, compared to net income of $39 million in 1998. After preferred dividend requirements, Time Warner reported third-quarter basic income per common share before the extraordinary item of $.29 in 1999, and $.28 after, compared to a net loss of $.03 per common share in 1998. These per common share results include the effects of the nonrecurring gains in each year referred to above. Excluding the aggregate effect of those items and the extraordinary loss, basic income per common share was $.08 in 1999, compared to a net loss of $.03 per common share in 1998. For the first nine months of the year, Time Warner reported net income of $1.1 billion in 1999 after the extraordinary loss, compared to net income of $78 million in 1998. After preferred dividend requirements, Time Warner reported basic income per common share before the extraordinary item of $.85 in the first nine months of 1999, and $.84 after, compared to a net loss of $.13 per common share in 1998. Similarly, excluding the aggregate effect of the nonrecurring gains in each year referred to above and the extraordinary loss, basic income per common share was $.20 in 1999, compared to a net loss of $.16 per common share in 1998. CABLE NETWORKS Third-quarter EBITA for the Cable Networks division was a record $328 million, up 21%, versus $271 million a year earlier. Nine-month EBITA for Cable Networks was a record $1.003 billion, up 19%, versus $844 million a year earlier. Both the Turner Cable Networks and HBO reported record results and strong double-digit growth. For the Turner Cable Networks, both subscription and advertising revenues posted double-digit increases during the quarter. The results also reflect increased subscription revenues for HBO and Cinemax. TBS Superstation's original movie, First Daughter, drew basic cable's largest movie audience of all time (excluding miniseries). Cartoon Network finished the third quarter as the second highest-rated ad-supported basic cable network in total day. By the end of the quarter, the CNN Web sites had served five billion page impressions year-to-date, an increase of 61 percent over the same period last year, once again making them the leading news and information sites on the Web. HBO received 23 Primetime Emmy Awards, more than any other network, and a record for HBO. For the seventh year in a row, the network won the Made-For-TV movie Emmy Award for the film A Lesson Before Dying. PUBLISHING Third-quarter EBITA for Time Inc., the company's publishing division, was a record $129 million, up 15%, compared to $112 million for the year-earlier period. For the first nine months of 1999, EBITA was up 12%, to a record $419 million from $373 million in the same period a year ago. Contributing to the quarter's results were strong double-digit advertising revenue improvements with significant gains at In Style, People, Sports Illustrated, Entertainment Weekly, Fortune, and Time Inc. Custom Publishing, and circulation gains led by People, Time and Teen People. These gains were somewhat offset by lower direct marketing results. Time Inc.'s People Magazine Group announced that it will launch Real Simple, a monthly lifestyle magazine, in March 2000. MUSIC Warner Music Group posted third-quarter EBITA of $76 million, compared to $99 million in the third quarter of 1998. For the first nine months, EBITA was $279 million, compared to $288 million a year ago. The quarter's results reflect declines in both domestic and international revenue. EBITA was affected by the decline in sales and lower results from its 50%-owned Columbia House partnership, partially offset by increased cost savings. Top worldwide sellers for this quarter include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kid Rock, Bravo Hits No. 26, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me original soundtrack, Mana, Cher, The Matrix original soundtrack and Goo Goo Dolls. FILMED ENTERTAINMENT Third-quarter EBITA for Filmed Entertainment was $228 million, versus $233 million for the comparable 1998 period. Nine-month EBITA was a record $806 million, versus $497 million for the year-earlier period. EBITA for the third quarter benefited from improvements in revenue from Warner Bros.' worldwide theatrical and home video businesses, offset in part by lower results from consumer products operations. For the quarter, Warner Bros. produced record results and 11% EBITA gains. The results from TBS's Filmed Entertainment businesses declined relating to the absence of substantial revenues which were included in 1998 from the syndication of Seinfeld. Theatrical revenues for 1999 benefited from the domestic box-office success of New Line's Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me ($205 million to date), which was the second highest-grossing film at the domestic box office of the summer season, and worldwide box-office results of Warner Bros.' The Matrix ($418 million to date), and Warner Bros.' Wild Wild West ($205 million to date). In September, Warner Home Video shipped an industry-record 1.5 million DVDs of The Matrix in North America, which generated record first-week consumer unit sales of approximately 780,000. The year-to-date 1999 results include a net gain of approximately $215 million in connection with the early termination and settlement of a long-term distribution agreement for MGM/UA home video product. BROADCASTING--THE WB NETWORK The WB Television Network's loss was $24 million in the quarter, compared to a loss of $17 million a year ago. For the first nine months of 1999, the loss was $95 million, compared to a loss of $78 million for the same period a year ago. The third-quarter results reflect higher programming costs associated with an expanded programming schedule and higher start-up costs associated with The WB Network 100+ Station Group. The WB opened its sixth season with strong ratings growth across the board, with returning hits 7th Heaven, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Felicity, Charmed and Dawson's Creek and new shows, Angel and Roswell. Kids' WB!, anchored by Pokémon, has become the leading broadcast and cable children's network on Saturday mornings. CABLE In the third quarter, Time Warner Cable posted record EBITA of $894 million, up from $417 million a year ago. For the first nine months of 1999, EBITA was a record $2.477 billion versus $1.246 billion in the same period a year ago. These results include net pretax gains for the third quarter of $477 million in 1999 and $6 million in 1998 relating to the sale or exchange of cable television systems and investments. For the nine months, net pretax gains amounted to $1.248 billion in 1999 and $90 million in 1998. After normalizing for the effects of these gains and other significant cable-related transactions, Time Warner Cable reported a strong internal 1999 EBITA growth rate of 11% for the third quarter and first nine months of the year. The cable division's continuing solid double-digit growth reflects an increase in basic cable, advertising and pay-per-view revenues. At the end of the third quarter, Time Warner Cable served approximately 13 million subscribers, and passed 21.3 million homes, which is over 21% of total U.S. television households. At the end of the quarter, Road Runner, Time Warner Cable's jointly-owned high-speed online service, had approximately 420,000 subscribers having added 100,000 new subscribers in the quarter. During this period, Road Runner launched in New York City and eight other new markets. Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX, www.timewarner.com), the world's leading media company, consists of five businesses: cable networks, publishing, music, filmed entertainment and cable.
