Even if you can't go to the concert, we're looking for people to mske flyers. and spread the word through mailinglists and clubs and stuff! 3rd, in case anyone's interested, here's a goo-related essay I wrote for my english class. I was just wondering if anyone wanted to offer feedback. oh, and I know my interpretations of the songs might be different from yours, but my entire point is that the music is open to so many different interpretations, which is why we love it so much; it becomes personal to each and everyone of us. ok, thanks! Steph "I Sing Myself" "I celebrate myself and sing myself." When Walt Whitman wrote this, he probably wasn't referring to actual music. However, the power music possesses to help us morally evaluate ourselves is too large to ignore. Songs that come from the heart reflect the most private parts of our life, and we can identify with them. Words can move, words can encourage action, words can reveal truths, words can sadden, and words can give hope. The music of the Goo Goo Dolls has become a soundtrack for my life, and through the words and chords, I have begun to find myself. There are two types of music: the music we listen to because it's cool and catchy and popular, and the music we listen to because we genuinely love to hear it, music that almost becomes a part of us. The former, the bubble-gum on the shoe of life, is represented by L.F.O.'s "Girl on TV" and the latter by the Goo Goo Dolls' "Slide." Compare these lyrics. From "Slide"^×"And I'll do anything you ever dreamed to be complete^ÅWhat you feel is what you are and what you are is beautiful." From "Girl on TV"^×"Shooby do-wop and Scooby Snacks, I met a fly girl and I can't relax." I'm instantly drawn to the beauty of the first, yet it is the second, the bane of my brain's existence, that replays in my head. What does this mean? L.F.O. wants to write some music, but they're bound to the simple tunes and limited vocabularies that they equate with superstardom. John Rzeznik, lead singer/songwriter/guitarist for the Goo Goo Dolls, can dive deep into his soul and emerge with a painful fragment of his past. He can speak the universal language of doubt, pain, hope, and truth. So though I may hum the pop-fluff dominating the radio when my mind is wandering, John's moving words are the ones that I will remember in the moments before I drift off to sleep. Another inherent quality of words is the ability to encourage action. From "Keep on Rocking in the Free World," to "Fight for Your Right to Party," music has forced its listeners to sit up and look at the world around them. Rzeznik's "Flat Top" criticizes a fickle and shallow society that's afraid to make some noise. "Conscience keeps us quiet while the crooked love to speak." This makes me wonder what I care about, what's been hidden because I don't feel I can make a difference. "A television war between the cynics and the saints^×flip the dial and that's whose side you're on," shows the indifference with which we make our decisions. With everything "falling all around us," Rzeznik confides that he's guilty of the same sins. He's no longer chastising us, he's showing remorse and encouraging us to do the same, to stand up and say what we have to say. Though sometimes painful, words can also reveal truths about ourselves. In "Eyes Wide Open," Rzeznik assumes the role of "a fortunate son of a fortunate son," with a "fist full of cash that somebody else earned." Most Tower Hill students can relate to his "I want to take control, want to make it all mine" attitude of invincibility. But as the chorus of "Eyes wide open, I can't see" kicks in, they may not realize his downfall should serve as a warning for them. Rzeznik's persona has been blessed with a fiscal advantage, but his money and status blind him, keeping him from the truth. John cannot buy back his soul. If the opening chords of "Acoustic #3" don't bring tears to your eyes, the words will. A painful song of his tragic childhood, John observes someone crumbling as their world betrays them. "And I tried so hard to reach you but you're falling anyway." The song offers no direct hope, and Rzeznik's fans know his life only worsens, as both of his parents die before he's sixteen. However, I personally am able to derive hope from this melancholy melody. I see my own life and think, "Yes, I see some of myself in this song, but I have things to be thankful for. If I fall, there will be someone to pick me up." And then there are the songs that offer hope and assistance and guidance by first painfully dissecting your life and then building it back. Rzeznik's "Name" begins, "All the dreams you never thought you'd lose get tossed along the way." I look back on things I've foolishly or accidentally sacrificed, and my heart hurts. As "You grew up way too fast and now there's nothing to believe" is sung, I wonder where my innocent childhood went, and I fear the approaching responsibility of adulthood that I'm not yet ready for. But the very last couplet reassures me. Someone is watching me. Someone wants to help me. Someone knows my problems, and he'll let me hide beside him. "I think about you all the time, but I don't need the same. If it's lonely where you are, come back down, and I won't tell them your name." I listen to music that mirrors and comforts me. When the world is sad, I need the consolation and stability of John's encouraging words. We all have the same problems, because we are all made of the same material. When John Rzeznik sings himself, he sings me as well. thanks for reading!!! ===== "Take another piece of me, give my mind a new disease, and the black and white world never fades to grey." ~~John Rzeznik "'Cause all we are is what we're told and most of that's been lies." ~~John "Nothing hurts when no one's real." ~~Still John! "I'm not too young for the world." ~~No one but John __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Our plans have fallen through and now we're trying to work something else out. We already reserved a room at a really nice hotel in downtown because we thought we'd be spliting the cost with someone but they kinda bailed so we can't really afford it anymore - does anyone need a room to stay in or have a room they're willing to share? We'd totally be able and willing to pay our share of the cost. Anyone interested in either sharing our room or sharing your own, please contact me as soon as you can. Thank you in advance to anyone that replies, I really appreciate it! Take care everyone! I missed quite a bit of the first part but it didn't matter since the Goos didn't come in till halfway through! Anyways, hopefully somebody out there can help me here. is it just my computer or is the Sam Goody website messed up? I get into the page and all I get is a task bar. None of the options work. I was wanting to look up the Goos 1st release and maybe some sheet music too. But it never fully loads the page. So, is this the site or me? Well, off to go set the VCR for Reg and Kathy. I got a bigger card so that I can fit everyones name who wants to be on it. Its a Ziggy card. If yah don't know who Ziggy is its that little bald cartoon guy. Anyways, on the front it has a purple background and he is on it and it says "Just a little wish" and then you open it and it says "for the biggest and bet birthday ever" when you open it it is like one of those pop out cards, the balloons pop out and then Ziggy is at the bottom. Again this is the card that is from everyone on the list who wants their name on it. I'll stick it on the outside of the box, and put that its from the whole list. If you want your name on the card please send your name to Nikki who is helping me with the names her e-mail address is googoobabe@itlnet.net (thanks again Nikki ^-^) Anyways have a GOOd night all ^-^ -May The Force Be With You- -Jill- "I hated sports, and I hated the people who played the sports, they were all idiots" *Johnny Rzeznik "But tomorrow holds such better days" *Blink 182 Adam's Song "Space may be the final frontier but it's made in a Hollywood basement" *Red Hot Chili Peppers *Califronication ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1999 19:34:10 CST To: GOO@mailinglists.org From: "celeste breytenbach" Subject: [GGD] places to see in buffalo? It also reeks. I care bout "my boys", it's cheezy but it's true. Yeah they can do whatever they want, they're grown guys, but I've seen it f*ck people up pretty badly, including my dad. I can understand why someone would be curious about it. It would break my heart to see them wheezing on stage or coughing in the middle of a challenging song. Just a thought. Long Live Goo! And they take over a month to get, because when she went to England she almost didn't get to come back for awhile due to the passport taking so long to get back from the US to England. She said they take over a month. So basically if you don't have one right now then there is no chance. The thing I don't get is MTV hasen't had that thing up there about the passports for very long. I'm not for sure though because I have never been out of this country. But that's what she said.
