at the York Fair

A Review by Eric Hoffman

Its now 1:11am and I'm listening to my tape of the show from Wednesday at the York Fair. Since I haven't been to a Fuel show in awhile, I'm going to give my thoughts on the show....

After waiting in line for about two hours, the door opened and much to my suprise... all the security there were just making sure people didn't run rather than "frisk" anyone. We took our spot on the track and after suffering intolerably through an entire Dave Matthew's disc, the Badlees came on. They put on a suprisingly up tempo and good show. I really liked their new single and the new album should be pretty good as well.

"The X" DJs came out with one of the Gold records which were just presented the band the night before in New York. That was cool to see.

SET LIST w/ NOTES

  • Samuel L. Jackson quote
  • Never heard that at a show before and I thought it was killer...
  • .
  • Untitled
  • Probably the best version of this song that I've heard. They had so much energy and absolutely tore through it.
  • .
  • Jesus or a Gun
  • Fed from the energy of Untitled and nailed this one... one of the best
  • .
  • Song For You
  • Not a song that I expected, but good mid-tempo song after 1st two scorchers
  • .
  • Bittersweet
  • I've heard the alternate version of Bittersweet a bunch of times and still can't decide if I like it or not
  • .
  • Sunburn
  • They put so much emotion into this one tonight... blew me away
  • .
  • Its Come to This
  • One of my lesser fav. songs, still good though and they nailed it
  • .
  • New Thing
  • Sounded like Brett had some mic problems / sound problems -- They slowed it down and personally I like the rip rocking version
  • .
  • Walk the Sky
  • Expected this one at some point and they didn't disappoint... one of the best songs of the night
  • .
  • Sister Mary Innocent
  • Expected this and they pulled it off great... another highlight of night
  • .
  • Hideaway
  • Not one of my fav. Fuel songs but Brett and Carl did it well
  • .
  • Shimmer
  • For having played this song for every person, in every radio station, in every shit hole club they still played it like they did the first time I saw them play it
  • .
  • Mary Pretends
  • One of the 1st time I saw a decent sized mosh pit... there should have been one much earlier though
  • .
  • Sunday Girl
  • Expected this one tonight but won't next week at Crowbar
  • .
  • Ozone
  • Good version but not as good as in March at X-Fest at Roundtop
  • Brett had more mic problems and couldn't sing last 5 "Suckers" until he went to Carl's mic
  • .
  • Revolution - (Encore)
  • More initial mic problems for Brett - eventually he gave it up and used Carl's which led to a good version with different stage setup
  • OVERALL THOUGHTS

Kevin had a mean drum solo right before Mary Pretends. It was much longer and better than any previous I have heard him do.

I really like Mary Pretends, Sunday Girl, and Ozone played together. They are almost like Pearl Jam's Mamasan trilogy

I was kind of disappointed that the Badlees induced more nudity than Fuel did... oh well.

They were really into the show. Whoever said that Brett was drugged up at a show couldn't be further from the truth. I talked to Jeff before the show and he looked tired as hell but they got all kinds of energy from the hometown folks.

Great show on a big stage... almost too big... Jeff ran around too much and I half expected Brett to jump on a big speaker but he didn't.

This has gotten a lot longer than I thought.... so thanks to whoever read the whole thing....
