Fuel

Teen Magazine Interview

By Michelle Sullivan

January 1999

Fuel is on fire! With hot hits like 'Shimmer' and 'Bittersweet' from their debut album, Sunburn, this incredible rock quartet -- Carl Bell, Brett Scallions, Jeff Abercrombie and Kevin Miller -- is torching stereos everywhere. We found Fuel front man Brett more than willing to fill us in.

----------

Teen - Why the name Fuel?

We were looking for something that was agressive and strong and showed a lot of energy -- and, well, fuels and energy source. It just seemed to fit us.

----------

Teen - What's the secret to your success?

Brett Scallions - People have said we're workaholics. Everything we do, we do for music. Before we were signed, we were working nonstop, carrying our own sound equipment and lights and everything. We love what we're doing and want to make the most of our opportunity. Your tours schedules tough -- you'll be on the road all year. What's that like? We feel most comfortable onstage, playing loud and proud -- it's what we love. But you always get a huge stack of dirty clothes, and you're constantly trying to figure out when and were you'll be able to wash them.

----------

Teen - You guys spend so much time together -- do you get along well?

Brett Scallions - We all have our own little quirks that bug one another, but we just let them pass. At the end of the day you just hang out and have fun together. It's like family.

----------

Teen - When did you first get into music?

Brett Scallions - When I was 13 or 14, my brother came home from college one weekend with a friends guitar. He sat down and was like 'Do you want me to teach you a chord?' He taught me a G chord.I sat there for two hours straight just playing that chord, and I think my fingers actually slipped and ran into a C chord. It just progressed from there.

----------

Teen - How has success changed your everyday life?

Brett Scallions - We've got roadies now! I'm still the same person my mom raised me to be. We're all fairly humble guys, and we just love doing what we do.

----------

Teen - If you put your life philosophy on a bumper sticker, how would it read?

Brett Scallions - Enjoy it. Enjoy it while it lasts.
