Title: Salamanca, NY 10-30-10
Post by sftrOu on Oct 31st, 2010, 12:09pm
Last night was Salamanca.  I sort of expected it to be a little off the wall because it was the eve of Halloween and the last show of the tour and almost a 'home' show, but there were no surprises so if you're looking for them, stop reading now.  :D

Crazy moments of the night:
1.  I saw a banana costume!  No hat or beard though. (Only funny for about 3 people)
2.  I almost missed the concert.

So, I bought tickets through the IM pre-sale because they were very good and discounted nearly 30% for some reason no one has told us.  But because the IM/their ticketing agent never has their shit together, our tickets all got switched to Will Call instead of mailed to us.  So I wasn't really aware what time the show started and just kind of assumed it would start sometime around 8-8:30.  The show was seated and I knew the parking set up so I decided I would just show up around 7:30.

The GGDs went on stage at 7.

By a weird turn of events a friend decided to go to the show last minute and bought a ticket on Craigslist.  We decided to meet and drive together because it's an awful drive and she needed to be there at 6 to meet the guy with her ticket.  So we got there at 6 and when I went up to Will Call to pick up my tickets, they were telling everyone the doors were open and the show started at 7 - with no opener.

I was leaving the venue at 8:36.  WTF?

I am actually waiting to hear reviews from people who missed or were late to the concert because no one really made a point of telling us how early the show would be.

I am certain the setlist is the same as the last couple of shows - which proves my thoughts that you need to go to the first couple shows of a tour before the setlist shrinks.  The first show of the tour (Syracuse) had All Eyes On Me, SFTROU, and One Night.  Those were all cut from Salamanca and only CLIG was added in.  DOWNGRADE.

The band sounded very good even if John was obviously on the tail end of being sick.  He was sucking on cough drops the whole show.  (Robby was eating something throughout the show, I hope it was candy.)  There were a couple moments of banter with people with signs and people dressed up.  Robby initiated a lot of the talking.  I think he was trying to make up for sick John because he was extra animated.

The crowd was a weird mixture.  I was fourth row, just right of center so half of the crowd around me were people from the IM who were in to the show and the other half were high rollers with comped tickets who sat the whole time or didn't show up.  Right behind me in rows 5 and 6, there were 20 seats that were empty until other people saw no one was claiming them and stole them.  The guy next to me did not stand even once during the show, the women in front of me (3rd row) sat over half the show.  This is why I hate casino shows.  The best part of the crowd was that Robby's parents were sitting directly in front of me and they are the most adorable people I have ever seen in my life.  (Yes, I know who Robby's parents are -in the least creepy and intrusive way possible.)

I took a lot of video.  I had a good view and I am so over the setlist at this point (get the drift, GGDs?) that it's not a big sacrifice to play with my camera.  So videos will be coming in time.

Oh!  And I won $7 playing the slot machines.  Clearly I am on my way to getting comped at the next show.

Dangit...missing part of the show really stinks.
I will never forget the time I missed the entire GGD set when they were opening for...who was it...I forget.   ::)

Yowza, you won $7.
Save up for retirement.

Thanks for the review.

(PS: I didn't do a review of our show at Sacred Heart because half the time I was laughing at the "mom jeans" and the other half I was laughing at the stretch capris. I did not see anyone dressed up as a banana.)

I was reading all your tweets from the evening. So much fun reading it as it's happening. I couldn't believe it when I read how early the show ended. Glad by some randomness you were there early and didn't miss it.
