Grammy award winning group The Goo Goo Dolls will be turning up their amplifiers to play for a crowd of rock lovers Feb. 9 in Chattanooga.

The platinum-selling band, which is famous for hits such as "Iris," will take the stage at Memorial Auditorium on McCallie Avenue.

Robby Takac, bassist for the band, said this will not be the first time the Goo Goo Dolls have played in Chattanooga. He said he is excited to be playing in smaller venues like Memorial Auditorium because of the intimate feeling it creates for the audience and for the band.

"This is going to be a lot of fun," Takac said. "I know we have been to Chattanooga in the 21 years we have been together as a band. We're happy to be working in smaller markets and at venues closer to colleges."

The band does plan on playing some of the older hits that made them famous, Takac said.

" To walk up there and not play "Iris" would be selfish," Takac said. " People want to hear it."

In addition to older songs, the Goo Goo Dolls will play songs from their latest record "Let Love In."

Takac said UTC students should attend the show because "we'll be out there to have fun. I think your school should make it mandatory."

James Wheeler, a Chattanooga senior, said he stood in line the day tickets went on sale and got seats six or eight rows back.

Wheeler said: "They are one of my favorite bands of all time. I'm pretty excited."

"Iris is probably my favorite song. I also like Big Machine," he added.

Takac said he thinks the band's music has remained popular over time because of the standards the band has for their music.

"I think we do what we do and we don't worry to much about fitting in at the moment," he said. "If you're doing what you're really supposed to be doing you do it from your heart.

Along with bringing their enthusiasm, Takac requested that fans bring can goods to the concert. The goods will go to the non-profit organization USA Harvest.
