Charlie Daniels, Goo Goo Dolls and Theory of a Deadman coming to Summer Celebration

MUSKEGON — Rock acts and a country legend in Charlie Daniels have begun to fill the eight-night main stage concert card for Muskegon Summer Celebration.

Alternative rockers Theory of a Deadman will headline on July 3 with the opening act Skillet. Returning to Summer Celebration July 7 will be the Goo Goo Dolls, which is touring with Michelle Branch and Parachute.

Daniels will be opened by Aaron Lewis — the lead singer for Staind who now also is a country solo performer — for the night of July 6.

In its 19th year, the revamped Muskegon Summer Celebration, presented by DTE Energy, now has five of the eight main stage acts announced for the community's premiere festival July 1-9. The financially struggling regional festival at Muskegon County's Heritage Landing will take a break July 5, reducing the nights from its traditional 11.

The Community Foundation for Muskegon County, the Muskegon Viking Lodge and retired businessman Roger Eikenberry among others came to the festival's financial aid earlier this year to continue the event this summer. The non-profit festival had a $250,000 deficit after its 2010 event.

The entertainment line up this year is being selected for not only what will appeal to West Michigan audiences but acts that will draw a crowd commensurate with their price, festival officials said.

Summer Celebration is not in a position to have a financial loss on any element of the 2011 festival, Executive Director Joe Austin said. To that end, the festival this year ended its parade and an air show over Muskegon Lake, which was to have featured the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels precision jet team.

“Alternative rock has been some of our most profitable nights,” Austin said of landing Theory of a Deadman. “They'll provide a good show and provide us with a profitable night.”

Prices for all three newly announced shows will be $25 for general admission and go on sale Saturday at 9 a.m. through Star Tickets outlets. The festival already announced Pop Evil for July 1 and Trey Songz for July 9.

“Our goal is to make this an affordable event especially with the recent record-high gasoline prices that will reflect in less discretionary money for many,” Austin said. “We are trying to get the best available act at the best price to keep our ticket prices lower.”

Austin pointed to concert series at Val Du Lakes in Oceana County and at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids. The Summer Celebration $25 general admission ticket price compares to $55 for Meat Loaf at Val Du Lakes and $70 for Peter Frampton at Meijer Gardens.

Summer Celebration has yet to announce the price and sale date for its all-event pass but those details will be announced with the remaining three nights of entertainment, Austin said. Festival officials hope to complete the concert line up by May 10.

“We certainly want to find a couple of final acts that appeal to our pass buyers,” Austin said of a group that traditional is older than 35. “It has been a tough shopping year for acts but we are doing the best we can. We want this done as quickly as anyone.”

Charlie Daniels is coming to Summer Celebration for the first time with his brand of Southern rock and country music. He's best known for “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and songs strong in patriotic spirit.

Austin said that current country acts are being priced at a level this summer that did not fit into the festival budget. Country legends like Daniels provided a much better chance of being financially successful, he said.

Theory of a Deadman formed in Vancouver in 2001 and have three albums to date with its fourth “The Truth Is …” slated to be released July 12. The single from the new album “Lowlife” is expected out sometime this month.

Goo Goo Dolls will bring its rock hits back to Summer Celebration. A 20-year career has generated several number one hits and four Grammy nominations. The group's most recent album “Something for the Rest of Us” was released last August.

Michelle Branch and Parachute are touring with Goo Goo Dolls. Now at 27, Branch won the Grammy for best new artist in 2003. Parachute formed in May 2008 in Virginia after members graduated from college with the five members carving out a pop/rock career since.

Decisions decisions... Do I go or not? The ticket prices are very affordable and Muskegon is about 1/2 hour away from my parents' house. Hmmm....
