Goo Goo Dolls' 'food-raiser' at St. Vincent will help the hungry

Those attending the Goo Goo Dolls concert Saturday at St. Vincent College in Latrobe are encouraged to bring as many cans as possible to tailgate before the show -- cans of food, that is.
The band, partnered with "food-raiser" nonprofit USA Harvest, is hosting a food drive to benefit the Westmoreland County Food Bank prior to the show. The person who brings the greatest number of nonperishable food items will win a meet-and-greet with the band, said Jennifer Miller, development director of the food bank.
The Goo Goo Dolls have conducted a similar food drive at every stop on their tour, but the county food bank "lucked out" in the fact that a staff member had a connection with the band, Miller said.
Deana Pastor, web and program director for the food bank, said she knew a member of the Goo Goo Dolls' "Street Team" from college.
"Her and I communicate, and when we found out (the Goo Goo Dolls) were coming, she said, 'Hey, would your food bank want to be involved?' And of course it's a great opportunity for us," Pastor said.
"It definitely helps to know people," Miller noted.
The band's "Street Team" is a grass-roots organization created to support and publicize the band and the nonprofit organizations it supports.
Miller said that the band's food drive comes at a perfect time as this is a very busy time of year for the food bank.
Pastor, who admits to being a very big Goo Goo Dolls fan, said that for her, the band's helping out the food bank is just a combination of two things she loves.
"I've seen (the Goo Goo Dolls) a bunch of times. In fact, I will see them twice (this) week," she said. "It's definitely exciting that a band that you already like is coming to town, and for them to do something so nice for the agency you work for makes it that much better."
Pastor will assist the "Street Team" in collecting the cans from 5 to 6:30 p.m. before the 7 p.m. show.
The rock band was formed in 1986 in Buffalo and is on tour promoting its newest album, "Something for the Rest of Us." Overall, the group has 14 top-10 singles and has sold nearly 9 million albums in the United States.
Tickets for the show, to be held in the Unity campus' Bearcat Lounge, are $25.
