NAME!!!!

I can't even put into words what it is about the song. It's the entire thing .... lyrics, music...everything. It's my most favorite song by any band or musician ever.  But I can't find the words to explain why. It just makes me feel and it puts me in my happy place.

In 1998, I was a middle schooler who listened to the top forty station and had no loyalty to any band, singer, anything.  I heard Iris premiere on that station and instantly fell in love with it and I loved it enough to actively seek out new songs by the band.  It was the first song I ever really really really loved.  And that's just my personal take.

More generally, Iris was, like, the biggest song ever, so it automatically trumps all other Goo songs and most non-Goo songs.  Most sales, highest chart numbers, most acclaim.  I'm not saying popular things are automatically better, but in an Iris/Name cage match, Iris would rip Name's face off.

Ditto. Everything about Iris is just awesome. I saw the video on a music channel here in UK and after seeing it I was just like Shocked I remember seeing the name of the video coming up and I was like  Undecided'goo goo dolls' then thought about changing the channel but then it started and I was blown away! Then I HAD to seek out more songs and the same week I went out and bought DUTG and Gutterflower.

Name.

"You could hide beside me maybe for a while" - that means a lot to me.

Has anyone seen VH1 Storytellers, with Name at the beginning?

Wow.....with the orchestra.....amazing.

Name.

Hands down.  No contest.

Iris is a good song and all, but it's a little overblown for my tastes.  I love a good ballad like the next gal, but Name has a aching simplicity to it that makes it a far superior song, in my book.  The lyrics, the melody, the chorus, heck, even the video for Name moves me beyond words.  It's a song I would never, ever tire of listening to, and the ONLY Goo song that always moves me to tears in concert.  The same cannot be said for Iris; in fact, I could do without hearing it played live ever again.

WHY MUST I BE TORTURED IN THIS MANNERHuh

I don't know which one I like better....

I like Name because it has deep meaning to it.
I like Iris because that's the song that made me fall in love with the band in the first place.

Ditto. Name is raw and simple, and unpretentious - about as accessible as you can get. When you come right down to it, this is pretty much just a voice and a guitar. And that's all you need. Sure, the solo in Iris is great, the lyrics are good, but nothing catches me in the same way as the lyrics of Name. I can relate to pretty much every darn word in that song, and it's just perfect to me. Besides, when he sings Name live, he still sounds like he means it, whereas Iris as become this jolly old sing-along instead. Tongue
