Goo Goo Dolls rock out
Band shows punk roots
By STEPHEN COOKE Entertainment Reporter

The Goo Goo Dolls may never have played Halifax before, but the Buffalo band made up for it Tuesday night with a tight overview of a hit-filled career spanning two decades.

The trio of guitarist Johnny Rzeznik, bassist Robby Takac and drummer Mike Malinin was boosted to a quintet with the aid of fellow American Korel Tunador on keyboards, guitar and sax, and Brad Fernquist of Calgary on second guitar and mandolin, for a crowd-pleasing 90-minute set that held nearly 3,000 fans in its sway.

Kicking off with Stay With You from the latest CD Let Love In, Rzeznik played it to the rafters, falling to his knees, rea-ching out to the girls in the front row and striking heroic poses. He’s a born arena rock ham, but plays the role with such chipper glee you can’t hold it against him, whether he’s encouraging the crowd to sing along to Slide from 1998’s Dizzy Up the Girl or feigning shock that they know the words to their 1995 breakout hit Name.

"We’re sad to leave Canada; it’s kinda nice to be in a country where they still have free speech," Rzeznik proclaimed in a rare political moment.

"Do I look like a Dixie Chick?" asked an incredulous Takac.

"You’re one ugly Dixie Chick, Robby," grinned Rzeznik in return.

While most of the set belonged to mid-tempo rockers like We’ll Be Here When You’re Gone and the signature ballad Iris, there were opportunities to rock out in a manner befitting Goo Goo Dolls’ punk roots, like the Takac songs Smash and Tucked Away from 2002’s Gutterflower. There was even an all-too-brief moment of crowd surfing during Dizzy Up the Girl’s January Friend, if only to prove that the band can make the current outpace the mainstream when it wants to.

Tomi Swick of Hamilton opened with an energetic set of well-honed originals from his Warner Music debut Stalled Out in the Doorway, as well as covers of Paul Simon’s Graceland and Radiohead’s Karma Police. A sort of cross between Ron Sexsmith and Tom Cochrane, Swick encompasses lyrical poetry with heart-on-his-sleeve gusto, plus an engaging lack of pretension.

I hate crowd-surfing, but when I read this I said aloud: "YES! YES!!"

I haven't heard of a crowd-surfing at a Goo show in years.

I hope Forbes made it through the show okay.

Thanks for the article!
A friend of mine who is going to the concert with me, is expecting crowd surfing. I don't think a bunch of Mainers will crowd surf.  Tongue

My goo concert back in '02, the opening band Sensefield, the lead singer of that band tried to crowd surf. Nobody was really into it.

I think I would suspend my allegiance to the church of "Holychristcrowdsurfingsucks" if I ever saw it happen at a (present-day) Goo Goo Dolls show. Just because it's completely ridiculous. Tongue

I went to a Queen Adnreena concert when I was about 15 or 16 and went crowd surfing in this tiny venue, but I didnt actually want to, I just got dragged up there by some friends I was with, and it wasn't anything exciting really, nearly got thrown out for it, although it wasn't my fault, thankfully I knew one of the security guys. Tongue
Sounds like a cool concert, hope you had a good time Forbes.  Wink
