NFL Goes Marching In to New Orleans U2 September 15, 2006 By Barry Janoff NEW YORK -- The NFL will go marching back into New Orleans on Sept. 25 with a mega-concert and a day of activities to mark the first pro football game in the Superdome since August 2005, and the first regular season NFL game in New Orleans since Dec. 26, 2004. The game between the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons, which will be seen on ESPN’s Monday Night Football, will be preceded by a concert starring U2 and Green Day. ESPN will broadcast the performance live during its Monday Night Countdown pre-game show. The daylong party also will feature The NFL Experience, the league’s interactive theme park with participatory games and displays, and entertainment including the Goo Goo Dolls. NFL marketing partners will be involved but are expected to maintain a low-key presence so that the focus can remain on the post-Katrina rebirth of New Orleans. “The Gulf Coast experienced the Super Bowl of all natural disasters last fall, and . . . we look forward to bringing Super Bowl-like pre-game festivities to help reopen the Superdome,” Brian McCarthy, the NFL’s director of corporate communications, said in a statement. “We recognize that this transcends a football game. We’re working with all facets of the Saints’ organization to make sure that it’s a great opening.” U2 and Green Day already have collaborated on a song, a cover version of “The Saints Are Coming” by the Skids, which they will perform that evening. They also plan to release the song as a CD single, with proceeds going to Music Rising, the fund started by U2 guitarist The Edge and others to provide relief to New Orleans’ musicians. http://www.brandweek.com/bw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=10031 22901
