• Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls performing in June in Los Angeles. The Dolls join Counting Crows for a concert at Mohegan Sun Arena.

I met Johnny Rzeznik in 1998, my first summer out of high school.
Remember his spiky hair and metal-ball necklace in the music videos for “Iris” and “Slide”? Well, he looked exactly the same in real person. It was kind of scary, actually.

Rzeznik was shopping with his fashion model girlfriend (sorry, ladies) on South Street in Philadelphia, probably getting ready for a Goo Goo Dolls gig. I told my band mate to sprint the eight blocks back to our apartment and get our band's CD while I marked Rezeznik, who eventually went into — surprise — Starbucks to order some fancy coffee.

When my wheezing guitarist got back with the CD, we went in and stuttered our way into an introduction.

“Du-du-dude, we do-do-don't mean to bu-bu-bug you ...”

He was like, “You ain't buggin' me man. What's up?”

He was totally cool and graciously took our CD. Of course, he never called. But at least he was nice. That's the sign of a musician who actually loves what he's doing, and that's got to show in the music.

The Goo Goo Dolls and Counting Crows perform a double-bill of popular rock Monday at Mohegan Sun Arena.

The Goo Goo Dolls worked hard in the late 1980s to find some form of musical recognition but didn't really reach wide audiences until their 1994 record “A Boy Named Goo,” which had the band's first big hit, an acoustic number called “Slide.” Ever since then, Rzeznik and his two less-pretty band mates have been a big adult contemporary band with a huge adult audience, but the Dolls can still turn it up to 11 every once in a while, melding Rzeznik's catchy vocals with some serious power pop progressions. The band's most recent recording is “Let Love In.”

The musicians in Counting Crows, who first howled their way to the top of the charts in 1993 with a chugging American traditional rock song called “Mr. Jones,” seem to pride themselves on richly arranged rock that isn't afraid to let the organ take center stage. The band's most recent studio effort was 2002's “Hard Candy,” which, despite the fact that they haven't exactly remained in the limelight, received great reviews. The band just released a live record this year, titled “New Amsterdam: Live at Heineken Music Hall February 6, 2003.”
