Title: wireless hell!!!!
Post by Shannon on Sep 3rd, 2007, 6:05pm
So I got my new Mac Book today....woo hoo! I've spent ALL afternoon trying to figure out this stupid wireless connection. I'm typically very computer savvy but this has me completely baffled and I'm frustrated as hell. I'm trying to set up the base to my PC so my new laptop can be wireless. I know it shouldn't be this complicated. Yet here I am still not connected :-/

I'm sorry, Shannon.  I can wireless troubleshoot for PCs, but Macs are their own little (evil) world I can't help with.

It's definitely something on the PC end that needs to be figured out... getting online with the wireless network is super easy with the Macbooks and really doesn't require much, if any configuration.

But that's about all I can offer. I tried setting up a wireless network for my house too and failed miserably, took the stupid thing back to the store, and got a wired router instead (and still ended up having to call tech support. :P)

I've troubleshooted to the point that I think I just need another ethernet connection line. I have the AirPort Extreme. My PC will be connected to the router directly .... not wireless. So I think that's what I'm missing....another cable. I'll be headed back to the store tomorrow to have them walk me throught it step by step. Talk about feeling like an idiot. :-/  I can always figure this stuff out. I hate that I can't!

Connecting the Mac to the wireless is a cinch. The wireless card is built right in. Once I get my base connection the laptop is easy.

I hope this helps. You can always rely on apple.com for a lot of things.
CONGRATS ON COMING INTO THE NEW ERA OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY .

When you're using the internet, use Firefox, Safari isn't as good, and IE is crap because they don't update it for macs.

and when you're done watch this:

Thanks Lauren. I've read just about every troubleshooting guide.....and then some. I really do think it's going to be as simple as needing an extra line.

I'll be super excited as soon as I get the base hooked up and can set up the laptop connection. I was reading through the setup and it looks like it takes about 5 seconds.

No problem. I really like when people get macs.  :angel4:

I learned on a Mac in college so it's all coming back to me. It's pretty much the exact opposite of a PC. I will say this though.....the built in laptop mouse/navigation pad is so much easier than any PC pad I've ever used. I don't really need a mouse with this. Mac just makes everything easy.

I got it. I'm on my other computer right now....hubby's playing on the laptop....gotta give him a turn ;). As soon as I get back on it I'll download it.

I had AOL on there but I don't like Mac's version of it. So I removed it and now have Firefox with AOL's toolbar. I have sooooo much to learn.

Yay!!

Yeah, I use iChat, I've never used the other version of AOL before so it's not a big deal to me. Good, you're using Firefox, don't even bother with IE, or Safari.

It's amazing isn't it?

I don't even use IE on my windows computer. I hate it. I have Firefox on both.

AOL on windows is so much better. Even on the updated version of the mac AOL it's not nearly as advanced or updated as the windows version. It was like using the version I used 4 years ago. Plus, I kept getting 3rd party security warnings that made me nervous.

I have alot to remember and relearn.

When I use my mom's computer, which is a PC she uses IE, I hate it. I downloaded Firefox, but she uninstalled it and flipped on me. This is why I only use that computer if I have to.

But yeah, it's worth it, everything I find... My favourite is that I can hide my dock so I'm not click on anything by mistake. I love the widgets! Especially my Family Guy Quotes.  ;D

What exactly are widgets? I keep reading of their existence but I'm not sure what they are.

I'm sitting in the middle of my family room in front of the tv. I love wireless!

If you press F12 or the Dashboard icon on your dock, you'll go to your widgets.

this page explains everything. Here is the page where you can download a whole bunch of different widgets to suit your needs

Ooohhhhh....I was checking out the dashboard earlier and showing how cool it is to my husband. I didn't realize the things in the dashboard are called widgets. It all makes sense now. I'm going to have to add some more cool widgets now ;)

I learned computers on a Mac in college but the Macs I learned on then are nothing like they are now. The principles of the OS are the same but all the cool features are totally new to me.

If you're looking for another AIM alternative, Adium (http://adiumx.com/) is a very nice one :) The only drawback is that file and photo sharing isn't fully supported (yet.) But if you're just using it to chat it's great and very customizable.

Glad you got your wireless situation figured out! :D

I did get it figured out. I just needed an additional ethernet cord.

I'm not much of an instant messager. I use AOL primarily for my email but I've had it as my browser for 10 years at least. I'm just familiar with it and it's so easy. I just like it.

But I'm starting to get used to using tabs on Firefox and just how it's set up in general. It's just very different from AOL and is taking me a bit to get used to. I still have AOL on my PC....thank God! Didn't I mention in another thread how I like what's familiar? AOL pisses me off almost daily because it blocks so much or just messes stuff up but I love it anyway.
