Title: Childhood Television Shows...
Post by the white o on Nov 27th, 2006, 3:18pm
Okay Nicole (the red o) just made me think of the shows I used to watch while growing up as a kid, some shows I remember watching are:

Mr. Dressup
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zRo0eDnFTM

Under the Umbrella Tree
Sesame Street
Today's Special
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2HOyn8oyjI

Anyone else remember?

Mr. Dressup, obviously, because he was awesome.

Mr. Rogers, who wasn't as awesome as Mr. Dressup, but cool enough.

David the Gnome.  Animated, so not in the same vein as the other two, but my number one kids' show.  My aunt would have to speed home from picking us up at preschool so that my cousin and I could see the whole episode.  Man... I've gotta find some David the Gnome episodes online.

I don't know Under the Umbrella Tree and Today's Special.  Were those Canadian shows?

Yup, Today's Special was shot partly on sets, but the beginning was at the Eaton's Centre in Toronto. It's so cool. I loved Today's Special while I was growing up! So was Under the Umbrella Tree.

If we're talking when I was a really little kid then ...

Romper Room

Bozo the Clown

Captain Kangaroo

Those were my favorites. As I got a little older I loved The Muppet Show.

OMG I remember those!!!  I used to watch them everyday in the morning before kindergarten.  And then when I got home in the afternoon, I would watch the American Sesame Street and whatever else that showed on PBS back then.

I'm an amendment to be
Yes, an amendment to be
And I'm hoping that they'll ratify me.
There's a lot of flag burners
Who have got too much freedom.
I want to make it legal for policemen to beat 'em.
Because there's limits to our liberty
At least I pray that there are
'Cause those liberal freaks go too far.

Ahem, cough cough... continue on.  I just can't read about Schoolhouse Rock without singing that song...

Care Bears countdown! 5,4,3,2,1, stare! I alwalys felt bad for Beastly. No Heart didn't appreciate him, Shrieky was always yelling at him and those damn Care Bears were always picking on him. I wanted him to win just once.

I also loved Mr. Dressup. But damn I hated those puppets they used after Casey and Finnigan. I wanted to throw Truffles into the oven and watch her BURN.

I was a very troubled child.  :-X

Thanks for the info, Lauren.
I really had no idea who Mr. Dressup was.
It figures the reason I'd never heard of the show was that it was Canadian.
Nifty! Ya learn something new every day. Well...hopefully most days.  :P

You were talking bad about Mr. Dressup before you even knew who he was?  Harsh.  No one could make a costume out of construction paper like him.

(I hated the puppets too, though apparently not to the extent you did, Christian.  :D )

Bill Nye was the man, except it was on here at the same time as Beverly Hills 90210.  (I was way too young to be watching 90210, and yet I did anyways.)

Um...hello.

JEM.

http://www.coucoucircus.org/da/images-da/jem.jpg

Jem is outrageous. Truly, truly, truly outrageous.

And those Misfits were so mean! Except for Stormer...I think that was her name; she was nice.

Also I didn't have cable growing up; I must have just watched PBS...Sesame Street, and ZOOBILEE ZOO. Now that show was awesome.

Peewee's Playhouse was on a noncable channel as well. Remember when he married a bowl of ice cream?

And when they went to commercial..."After these messages we'll be riiiight...BACK!"

You know what's funny ... somewhere in my house there is an audio cassette (anybody remember those?) of music from Jem that belonged to a sibling.  Maybe if I feel nostalgic later, I'll go dig it up.

OMG Zoobilee Zoo RULES!!!
It was annoying that it didn't air on a channel where I lived, so I only got watch it when I was at my grandparents house.  I hear it aired on the Hallmark Channel in the US a few years ago for little while again.

"After these messages we'll be riiiight...BACK!" That's classic!  Bring back the Saturday morning cartoons!!

Animaniacs Vol. 2 and Pinky and The Brain Vol. 2 came out on DVD yesterday. ;D  Does anybody remember Freakazoid! or how about Tiny Toon Adventures?

White O, rabbit ears are TV antennae.

My parents still have rabbit ears....right now. Yes. I know it's almost 2007.

It is a constant battle, me trying to convince them to get cable. They will "never, ever, ever, get cable." They had it when I was about 3, too young to enjoy it. Then it was gone....

Not that it matters now, since I've been living away from them for a few years. But, for example, it sucked the summer I had to move back home and I missed the end of Real World San Diego. And any other cable show I had been watching at the time.

Ok, One Saturday Morning..yes! That was just a few years ago, right? They so need to bring that back....after watching the link...aw, man. That was good television. And they showed Recess; I loved that show.

I totally had a Jem cassette tape. That was my morning routine....eating Cheerios while listening to Jem in my little tape deck. And one morning on the way to kindergarten my dad surprised me by playing it in car.

The purple dude is Grimace. As for the niece....I have no idea.

How about .... "two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun"

I resorted to rabbit ears last May in my dorm room.  Good times...

Oh my god, the "two all beef patties...." thing... Years ago my dad and mom said it in unison to me and I was so confused.  It was weird...

That commercial was set to music....like a chant almost. All it took was for me to hear it twice and I had it totally memorized ... and I was maybe 10. I still remember it without any effort. Very clever marketing.

It's really neat seeing those old commericals. I sat there one day and went on www.retrojunk.com and watched a bunch of old commericals from the '90's...I was getting all nostalgic on myself.

Like this one: http://www.retrojunk.com/details_commercial/98/

I don't think I can get all nostalgic about the 90's. It's too recent for me.
When I went to that site, I was all like, damn it only goes back as far as the 70's. The clips that get me nostalgic are the few they have from the 60's.

Most of my childhood was lived in the '90's. I was born in '85, so it's  what I remember seeing, just as when you grew up in the '60's.

That would be amazing if Retrojunk had things from the 1960s!! Did you see the commerical on retrojunk for the Blythe Doll and her eyes changed colours she blinked??

I was thinking about it. I bet the reason there's so little stuff from earlier than the 70's on there is because there were no VCRs way back then. If you look at the quality of some of the 70's clips, they seem to have those funny lines in them that you'd get from taping something on a VCR. The newer clips seem a lot clearer.
Who would ever think to record a TV commercial anyway?

I remember how we used to do screencaps. We'd tape something from the TV on our VCR, then stop the frame, take a picture with a 35mm camera, get the film developed, send the pic to our friends via snail mail...
cripes, you guys have it so easy now!

The people who recorded those commercials were thinking back then!!

Wow, I remember snail mail. I got my first email address when I was 14, back in '99, I felt so cool. Now I have several!!

It's so easy now, you're right. The kids in the future are going to have it easier than us now!

Did anyone have those rubbery Gumby and Pokey figures  that we used to play with? If you bent their appendages enough times, the metal rod inside used to poke out. I guess we were rough with our toys.

Yeahhhh I had those! But I never made the metal poke through :)

GUMBY! And his pony pal Pokey too....that's all I remember of the song. And Gumby skated around on one foot...and he had a friend named Goo and Spike, I think.

In the short Gumby movie I had he skated through a book and got stuck and had to try and get back through to the other side....this same tape had some clip with a guy who had a lawnmower and ended up mowing everything up with it.... I will be VERY surprised if anyone has any idea what I'm talking about.
