Title: Best song of the 80's?
Post by the green o on Nov 2nd, 2006, 10:25pm
I've been watching on & off VH-1's countdown of the best songs of the 80's. Some really good stuff...some...not so much.
So tonight I caught the top songs, and they got to #1 and it's Bon Jovi's "Living On a Prayer".
Now, c'mon. I admit I was a big Jovi fan for a long, loooong time, but nah.
It was a fun song, had the hook & all that.
But does it really compare to something like U2's "Pride (In the Name of Love)"?
I think not.

It was still a hoot to see Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" so high up in the count.

Discuss amongst yourselves. Even if you weren't born when some of these songs came out, you still know 'em , don't ya? Like The Cure's "Just Like Heaven", or "Under Pressure" by David Bowie/Queen. Good stuff.

I respectfully disagree with you.  While I love U2, U2 does not make me stop whatever I'm doing, turn the radio way up, and sing along at the top of my lungs.  Living On a Prayer?  Hell yes.  Any decade highlighted by day glo, side crimped ponytails, and leg warmers should be represented by the best sing along song EVER.

TAKE ON ME by A-ha.

Was a hit in 1985. The best year of the 80's.

Cause that's the year I came into the world and made it better.

HAHAHAHA!!! I'm just joshing with you.

But seriously I do love that song, and the music video for it was absolutely amazing to watch.

The 80s is my era. I can make a LONG list of great songs .... but I could never choose just one .....

Duran Duran - The Reflex

Tears for Fears - 'Shout' or 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World'

Modern English - I Melt with You

Elton John - Candle in the Wind

Michael Jackson - Beat It

Madonna - Like A Virgin

U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday

Prince - Little Red Corvette

I agreed with it.  It really was THE song of the 80's (or maybe You Give Love a Bad Name).  I think people forget just HOW big Bon Jovi was back then.  U2 gained more popularity later on. (and With or Without You was on the countdown).

One thing I didn't agree with on the top 20 - Duran Duran should be in it..but I would have went with "The Reflex" and they chose "Hungry Like the Wolf".

Actually, I think a lot of their choices seemed to reflect the popularity of the song's video in many cases. The more airplay the video got back then on MTV, the more popular the song was.

I agree, The Reflex was awesome!

I'll agree with that.  They did mention the video a lot...and if they have/had a show on VH1 or MTV, even better.  They plugged their reality stuff A LOT.

I was watching a program called "Back In..." on Much More Music, a Canadian Music Channel, and they mentioned he did back up vocals for the chorus. It's really creepy I think. HAHA!

Lol, just reading the title of the thread, the first song that popped into my mind was "Livin' On a Prayer".  I love that song.  "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman is another one of my favorite 80s songs.

I totally agree with Livin' on a Prayer being #1.

But what about #2? Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me. The second-best sing-along song of the 80s.

I'm hot...sticky sweet....

I don't know why but whenever I see one of those on MMM, I have to watch it. I really hate them but I have to watch it.

I still say Michael Jackon isn't getting enough credit here. Before he was creepy and weird, he was damned cool I'm telling you'se. 8)

Marty McFly: Wait a minute, Doc, are you trying to tell me that my mother has got the hots for me?

Dr. Emmett Brown: Precisely.

Marty McFly: Whoa, this is heavy.

Dr. Emmett Brown: There's that word again; "heavy". Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?

I've seen them perform that song a helluva lotta times in concert. For a "ballad", it kicked serious wailing banshee butt.

(I think I was always waiting for bassist Rachel Bolan to get his darn nose-to-ear chain thing caught on something.)

Lauren....that a-ha video was back from when MTV used to play all music all the time......oh the days. I can't even begin to tell you how many hours of MTV I used to watch with the original VJs Martha Quinn, J.J. Jackson(who sadly passed away), Alan Hunter, Nina Blackwood and Mark Goodman.

Does anyone remember how at the top of every hour MTV would preview upcoming videos and the rocket would launch. Those were definitely the good ole' days of MTV. I HATE MTV now and absolutely refuse to watch it!!!! What happened to the videos?

I'm glad I could bring back some good memories...It's sad what that has turned into.

Much Music, the Canadian equivalent to MTV does the same thing. There is like what an hour of music videos, then shows afters shows after shows...I loved when they had all day music segments!!

I remember! I used to be so hooked on MTV, I used to leave it on all day. I still have some video compilations I made from back then. Now, like iris said, the only time I watch MTV is really early in the morning, when they show music videos. What a concept...music videos on a music video network.  ::)
It wasn't so bad when they only had their one "game show" in addition to the video programming, but now the balance has been thrown way off kilter with all the lame "reality" programs & stuff. I don't watch any of that.
