Title: Bain Mattox
Post by iris3732 on Aug 11th, 2006, 7:14am
Where's Pryde....or anyone else who knows this guy.

I'm seeing Edwin McCain next month and he's opening for him.

Should I get the CD?.....who would you compare him to?

Hi Iris!
Yeah, I'm probably the resident Goo Board Bain Expert. :D Are you going to the Workplay show or the Roxy show? I think I might be at the Roxy show myself! ;D

Bain's hard to classify - some people think he sounds like the Counting Crows and many people that I know that are fans of Jump Little Children really like Bain. (Bain used to open for them frequently.) Better Than Ezra fans seem to dig him too, and he's opened for them a couple of times. Bain's newest cd "Prizefighter" is a good one, but most of the songs are somewhat sad.  Bain was influenced alot by Elliot Smith about whom Bain wrote "Tragic Keys" (which was on Alternative Addiction's "The Addiction V.5" cd). Bain uses unusual instrumentation on songs including banjo, mandolin, and accordion, as well as the guitar and harmonica. It know it sounds strange, but he does rock. 8)

My favorite on "Prizefighter" is "Grace" or "Slowpoke". I'd get Bain's self-titled cd first, and then buy Prizefighter.  He does a lot of songs off of the "Bain Mattox" cd at his live shows - "Slumber Plane", "Thorn", "Rice Paper Heart", and "Peripheral People".

There's a podcast on the Workplay website of Bain performing "Thorn" off his last cd "Bain Mattox". Check his website at www.bainmattox.com or www.myspace.com/bainmattox to hear some more of his songs. ;D

I just love Bain.  I had alot of things going on when he was here with Edwin in June and wasn't able to make the show here.  I'm hoping he comes back my way and I'm able to go next time.

Enjoy the show!  From what Pryde tells me, he's amazing live!

DUH, I didn't even think of looking on his myspace page!

Thanks for the info; I will check out the BM CD.

BTW I'm going to the Roxy show :)

Iris,
Did I meet you at the Goo's Centennial Park/On The Bricks gig a couple of years ago? Anyway if you see somebody carrying a black purse with Bain Mattox on it and an old timely tv (his old symbol/tattoo) that will be me. :D

After their set, the band will probably be in the lobby of the Roxy meeting fans, so stop by and say Hello to them. ;D   If you see me - say Hi to me too!  ;D

If you're in Atlanta and want to check him out before the Roxy gig - he's playing after the Open Mic Madness Finals at Smith's Olde Bar on 8/26. Bain hasn't played much this summer in Atlanta, so I'm sure the show will sell out so get your tickets early. ;) The Edwin/Bain show will probably sellout too - so get your tickets early for that one too. ;)

Hey, no; I didn't meet anyone from the board at On the Bricks.

But I already have my tickets for the Roxy show....the Smithe's Olde Bar show sounds cool, too. I have to babysit that night though.

However, I am patiently awaiting the arrival of Mr. Mattox's CD.  ;D

Iris,
I met up with a bunch of WOGgers at the Centennial Park show and I think I met someone that used "Iris" in her screen name too.  That seems like a long time ago....LOL.

If you're in the Atlanta area and ever go to used CD stores - look around for Bain's first cd, "Technicolor Episode".  Most of the songs on TE were re-worked for his self-titled cd, but it's got some very good songs that don't appear on his other cds and Bain played almost every instrument on the cd.  It's very "folkie" compared to what he sounds like now.  Bain has so few copies of it left, he doesn't even list it on his discography anymore.   :'(

Iris,
Did you get your cd yet? By the way, Bain's booked another show in September at the Variety Playhouse. Check his website for details. ;)

I got my Roxy tickets this weekend. ;D ;D ;D

I did get the cd  :D and working my way through it in the car. I like him! He sounds to me like a bit of Better than Ezra and Michael Tolcher sometimes.

Title: Re: Bain Mattox
Post by Pryde on Aug 24th, 2006, 9:27pm
Glad you're enjoying the cd so far!!! :nanner:  Tolcher is from Atlanta too and they've played some shows together.  Bain and Tolcher just got through doing a "True Experience" music event at a resort in the Keys with Three Doors Down, Cowboy Mouth, etc..  I'm hoping I can make the event next year if Bain's playing in it again....

Make sure you say "Hi" to the guys at the Roxy show.   Of course it will be easy to spot Bain since his picture is on the cd, Chris is the very tall lead guitarist and a real sweetheart, Mike is the rockin' bass dude, and Oliver is the dark-haired (or at least it was last time I saw him  :D)  new drummer.

Iris,
I made it to Bain's Smith's Olde Bar show last night.    The house was packed, the air wasn't working well in the concert hall, and the show was smokin' HOT!  8)  We got a new song last night, a really old song from Technicolor Episode that's making a return, and everything sounded great!!!   ;D ;D ;D

Can't wait for the Roxy show!!!!!  ;)

See you at the show!!!!  ;D ;D ;D
Say "Hi" to the Bain guys if you get the chance.  ;D

Woohoo; I can't wait!

Thorn is on repeat in my car. Unfortunately it's kept me from getting to know the rest of the songs on the CD but that's usually what happens. Takes me awhile to work my way through all the songs.

Pryde, I should have asked you to give me a description of yourself so I could have looked for you tonight - I had Bain sign my CD and got a picture with him and there were more people than I thought there would be waiting to meet him. I was too shy to go "Hey! Who here posts on the WOG board?"  ;)

But, onto my review.

Bain rocked the house. My friends were like "Who is this guy? He's really good." I said, "NOW do you see why I wanted to get here on time?" (We were 15 minutes late.) We had already decided to sit in the balcony in the front row but that was full of course so we had to sit farther back.

Anyway, Bain is singing Thorn (you know, my current obsession.) So when he asks people to sing along, I am the only one in the balcony singing. And I can't sing worth beans so I wasn't singing very loud, obviously. When I got my CD signed I told him I sang from the balcony but no one else did. He's like "You should have been down in the front with us!" and then he wrote "Say no to balconies" on my CD. Really cool dude.

So after the show my friends were all like "Bain rocks. I think I like him better than Edwin."

Here's the picture I got with him.

Hi Iris!!!
I'm so happy you enjoyed the show!!!  ;D ;D ;D  I've been a huge Bain fan since I saw him open for Sister Hazel a couple of years ago....He just blew me away the first time I saw him...  And I think I've been to over 60 of his shows now... :D  Luckily I  live between his two biggest markets, Atlanta and Charlotte, and he's played our local venue quite a bit.  ;D ;D  ;D

I should have told you to have the merch guy, Danny, to point me out.  Most times whomever is working merch for Bain knows me. ;)

Bain's from Atlanta so he had lots of friends and family at the show.  Unfortunately he hasn't played many shows in the ATL this summer, and the last time he played Smith's it was a very late night show since he played after the open mic madness finals.

Hope to meet you at another Bain show soon!!!  ;D

Rzezniksangel,
Glad you're enjoying "Bird in the Hand". Hopefully you'll get to hear Bain do those songs live soon. I'll see him next week and see if he's got anything booked this summer for Florida. We're planning a trip to Orlando this summer, and if we could work in a Bain show at The Social - that would make my vacation. ;D

Iris,
Sorry I forgot to look for you at the Eddie's show. :'( There were a bunch of my Bain Fan Friends/Rock Boat Buddies there that I hadn't seen since the Boat so I got caught up in catching up with everybody. But I am definitely planning on coming to the Smith's Olde Bar show with some friends. I can't wait until April 18th when he plays my home venue - The Handlebar - and hopefully we'll make it to the Columbia and Charlotte shows. And plan ahead - Bain told me there's a good chance he'll be playing Athfest this summer. They've announced the headliners - Perpetual Groove, The Whigs, and the Drive By Truckers. Keep checking www.athfest.com for details.

And for any other Bain and REM Fans out there,
www.athensmusic.net now has Various Artists Finest Worksongs: Athens Bands Play the Music of REM.

Bain has three tracks on the cd - Finest Worksong, (Don't Go Back to) Rockville, and Fall on Me. They're also singing along on the "End of the World" finale.

The cd also has songs by Liz Durrett, Claire Campbell, Tin Cup Prophette, Modern Skirts, The Observatory, Patterson Hood, and Five Eight. Net proceeds from the Finest Worksongs release will benefit Community Connection of Northeast Georgia and Family Connection/Communities in Schools. ;D ;D ;D

I love Bain's version of Finest Worksong.

Iris,
Unfortunately something has come up for May 18 - so I won't be able to go to Bain's Smith's Olde Bar show.  :'(

I'm hoping to make it to the next Charlotte (May 23) and Columbia shows (June 9th).  And Bain's announced he's playing Athfest (http://www.athfest.com/) on the Main Stage (Washington and Pulaski Streets) on Saturday, June 23, at 7:00 pm in Athens.  Hopefully I'll make that one too.  ;)

I've been to 3 of Bain's shows during the last 3 weeks and he and his band are sounding the best I've ever heard them full band - so that Smith's show is going to be soooooo good!!!  :rockin:

Hopefully I can make that Atlanta show!!!  ;D  And one of the "Gunstreet Girls", Ash, was once in Bain's band a long, long time ago. So it will be cool to see him again.  ;D

Hope you can make the Smith's show - and take lots of first-timers with you!!!  ;)
