I have to agree with you there...A lot of people will go check out the music early if it's out there...some will end up buying some of the songs if they really like them and if they respect the artist. Others won't feel guilty about getting it for free...

I will buy it regardless. I already think I like the album enough though just from what we have heard. I'm really excited to see what Nightmares and Dreams will sound like, since I don't think its an acoustic song, but thats really the only way we have heard it.

I'm going to do the itunes thing the midnight of the release since that's probably the quickest way to hear the songs (if they don't get leaked)...

I'm also hoping that since the album will be released sometime in July, we will get the official tracklist very soon. Don't bands/artists usually release that about 2 months before the album release?

Actually, it has, but not the whole concept of stealing, but online file sharing. The vast majority of music being shared online is illegal. It's impossible to stop and it's just the reality of the internet. The only way to stop it is to shut down the internet. I'm not here to defend it or be against it, but i'm just speaking the reality.The more the music industry fights it, the stronger file sharing becomes. I think the future in music is in touring and selling their albums or singles at a much lower price. Probably advertising at their concerts as well.

I'm not going to get into the whole buying vs stealing thing right now...

But keep in mind that LLI did not really leak.  The first time the album was available was streaming on VH1.com a week before the release.  In that case, the band/label DID welcome everyone to hear the music before they decided whether or not to buy it.

Along the lines of file sharing ... The Goo Goo Dolls would be really smart if they sold copies of their live shows after the event. I know of many artists who do this and I think it's smart. And, if the price is right, most fans will buy a copy of the show they attended. I know I would. And in doing this the money goes into the artist's pocket and not someone else. We already know shows are being recorded and shared. I'd love for the band to take it a step further and provide a good quality live recording for a decent price.

Hmm. This is the great debate. I won't get into it.. Haha.

For me, I will probably end up downloading the songs online but I will still buy the album, I always do. I listen to a lot of mainstream stuff, but I would never go out and buy a Lady Gaga CD. Not because I don't like the songs, but because buying CDs has become such a thing of the past, and I only really do it for Goo. Possibly another Fleetwood/Stevie Nicks album.

Hey, I don't disagree, but there's no point in talking about morality. There's really no point in even trying to shut down sites or sue people. The industry have to develop a new business model because that's just the reality of our new world. The ones who take advantage of this new technology will surive and excel. Or they can be like those radio stars that complained that they failed because music videos was all about beauty and they were ugly.

What I can tell you is that I got to prelisten to Let Love in and GutterFlower, and as a result, I bought it. If I get a chance to prelisten the new album and I like it, I buy it. If i don't like it, I won't.

One thing is for sure. If I don't get to prelisten at all, I won't buy it at all.

I think artists need to learn from rappers, and just try to sell anything they could, from goo goo dolls balloons, dolls, toy guitars, gum, water bottles, key chains, frizbee, usb flash drives, towels, calendars, etc. Who here wouldn't want to carry a goo goo dolls key chain or flash drive? �Music should just be a draw to buy other products. They should also just crank out as may songs as possible and release old and unrelease ones and sell it on the website for 50 cents each.

Another thing is charge to take pictures with them. People would line up just to take pictures with stars. For extra, the goo's can dress up like pirates. Also, they can make videos such as birthday songs. What goo fan wouldn't want a video with the goo's singing happy birthday to them? The possiblity is endless. At the end of the day, it's a business and business change models all of the time.

My point about morality is that it doesn't matter what you say. People will still download it. i believe that the business is changing and downloading music will not be seen as wrong or illegal. Instead, it will just be seen as a way to attract people to go to concerts, for companies to advertise, or for other ways to make money, as it is with the radio or tv. Before, people who went to goo concerts were fans who already had their albums. Now or in the future, I believe more people will go to their concerts because they got exposed through downloading. They probably would have never considered going to a concert before if they had to buy he album, which they didn't because they didn't know if the album was worth buying.

I do agree with releasing albums and asking for donations. That is exactly how a lot of pirates are making money.

To me, it's all selling out. If it wasn't selling out, then why even be in the business? Why not just open up your own website and just upload mp3s on there. Why even care if people are downloading it illegally?

One of my complaints with GGD has always been that they don't release enough music. I'm always craving demos and cut songs and would definitely pay for most of what they would put up on a website. Yet, I understand their rights as artists to not release everything they do because some of it they don't want people to hear.

I think it's definitely practical to sell more things, such as USBs and keychains, etc., but I think that at a certain point it does become selling out. Even if it is a business, the emphasis should still be on the art. I don't know where the line is.

I think the solution to a lot of pirating, though, is either 1.) release your album for free and ask for donations, or 2.) release your music on your website immediately for a price, and later come out with a physical copy, maybe with bonus tracks. I'm sure some of you have other ideas, too.

That is a very, very good idea. I'd pay a lot of money to have the recordings from the shows that I've been to.

And Pon, I agree to an extent that the Goos should be better at merchandising, but are you being serious with some of those suggestions? Especially the pirate thing. I don't think anyone'd do that, unless it was like a one time thing for fun. They're people too, they have a minimum of dignity. I, as a fan, would not be able to take them seriously if they'd do that stuff. And if they don't appear serious they could lose a lot of fans.

Hey, pirates can't be any worst than a bunch of dolls, can they? LOL! I say do whatever to generate income. I just saw a movie by this rap group today and it was an awful movie that had nothing to do with music, yet it sold a million copies because people wanted to see them. That was in just a few short years ago while filesharing was already widespread.

i agree with going to more countries. Nobody want to admit it but the internet has made the music industry international and people are listening to music from other countries.

I just want to add that i was reading an article and it talked about how starting now and definitely in the future, file sharing is becoming encrypted. That means the entertainment industry will not be able to catch anybody for downloading illegal files.

sorry for making this thread about filesharing too much, but we know that the goos have been able to overcome everything so far, and let's see how they overcome this.

How unfortunate :( You can always pre-order it on amazon or whatever too, usually they get sent out slightly before the release date, so you might have it in your hands early that way!

Anyway. Is this August 3rd thing legit or what? I want to see it confirmed, in a full sentence, on an official band or a label site. Thankyoumuch.

LOL! I would never buy a CD from walmart unless i have to. I don't know about now, but I remember they edit a lot. I bought "hold me up" from there though because that's the only place I could get it during the mid 90s. Great CD.

They posted it on the news section of the GGD website.  It really doesn't mean it can't change though...  LLI's release date changed twice after it was confirmed.

I still prefer to get all of my news from John's Twitter though.  Where else can you get album release dates AND find out the whole band is growing beards?

It's just kind of funny to me now.  Like, what's another week, month or year of waiting at this point?

But then I see John's reaction to being told the album is pushed back again and I feel really sad for him and the rest of the band.  For me, the album is a source of entertainment.  For them, it's their livelihood.

John has said that he feels like he will always want to be on a major label if he has a choice... But I think that was before this whole mess.

This spring tour has proven that the band does not need major promotion to sell a tour because they've done well with it without even having anything to promote.  The only question is whether or not radio would support the band without a major label telling them to.

We might not get an album leak, but I think we're going to get a huge portion of the songs performed live on the summer tour before the album is released.  We've gotten 5 new songs on this tour and their summer tours have historically included 7-8 new songs from the album they were currently promoting.

That really makes me burn. I really wanted it to be out so I could enjoy it all summer, now I won't even have time because I head back to school in September and will only have time for musical theatre songs. UGH.

I have to laugh at myself for missing this though, haha.

And me and my best friend LOVE the goo's and always listen to the album together - now that won't happen. :(:(

John's twitter says August 31 now.  That will put the album out after every date announced on the summer tour thus far.

Also, the video on the IM talking about the album being pushed back has been heavily edited, removing the whole chunk about the album being pushed back.  Weird.

I'm mostly interested in why the (sic) is in there.  Maybe it's too late, but I don't see any misspelling or grammar issues (We are talking about John Rzeznik using Twitter though, so punctuation shall not be considered).  Also, I don't think you can (sic) your own writing unless you are making a pun because wouldn't you just correct any errors you made?  English majors of WOG, please provide your insight on this important issue and educate me, the engineer who is not required to be able to spell or use words correctly.

But I don't think there's any conspiracy theory behind WB pushing back the album.  They employ lots of people who do marketing research to figure out the optimal time to release an album.  WB wants to release the album at the time it will sell the best because that's how they will make the most money.  Maybe they feel that Home needs more time to give momentum to the album or maybe they've decided they need a second single first or maybe they're hoping that people seeing the band on the summer tour will encourage them to go out and buy the album.  

And I'll put money on another delay.  We're too far away for that to be a solid date.  LLI's release date changed in the month it was due to be released.

Yeah. I kinda doubt there's anything that crazy going on behind the scenes but who knows anymore. :P

And for another non-update, John just just re-tweeted his previous message ("RT @Johnrzeznik1: The best for us I have nothing but faith in them (sic),") thus making even less sense than it made before.
I don't get the purpose of his (sic) either. You can't really use that on your own writing, no. And had he not wasted those characters he even could've punctuated those 3 sentences. ;)

Nightmares and Dreams is missing.  Also, I'm wondering if Notbroken is a typo or a cutesy play on words (no space because it's... not broken....).  Still Your Song is the only one we didn't know.

Still totally bummed that I will own a GGD album with a song called Hey Ya, but I think I will survive as long as we get an Outkast singalong going.

I'm sure if they play new songs during the summer tour it will end up on youtube.

I put the live versions of the 6 new songs on my ipod and listened to them on repeat for hours before I went to the concert.

I will be at the first show of the summer tour.  Assuming that the setlist will not gradually incorporate new songs, I will be getting and posting audio, if not video, of all new material played.  If I somehow fail and everyone else in Cleveland fails, Lauren, Shannon and I will be at the second show and will attempt to record all new material.
