I'm not even going to try to explain all the reasons I love that speech.  I'm just pleased someone recorded it, because even a transcript couldn't have done it justice.

Haha, I was excpecting it to just be him on that page, and the first thing I saw was a picture of John Legend, and I was like, "Uhm......Wrong John....WTF?"

That bald guy who introduced/presented the award to John made me laugh. So did John's shoes.

I wonder who made that bet with him.

The guy is Paul Shaffer.  He leads the band on The Late Show with David Letterman.  He's always kind of like that. :D

Are you laughing at John's shoes because they look long and flat?  Whenever he wears pants with narrow pant legs, I always think his feet/shoes look funny. (This is in no way making reference to 'big feet, big... um, shoes)

I want to believe Robby or Mike made the bet.  Mike and John had/have a bet about being asked a certain question in interviews and there was some bet about John getting through Sympathy without messing up the lyrics.

I love that he's actually wearing something else than camo-pants! And yes, I am laughing at his ridicolously long and pointy shoes. I don't usually mind that, but they actually caught my eye, and that's sorta hard when I'm focusing on his face.
And if that "rule" really applies.. I'd be scared if I was Melina. Really.

He played Sympathy at SHOF or are you referring to something else? But yay, I love when bands have bets like that, they're so funny.

No, he only played Slide at SHOF.

On one of the LLI tours, he regularly told the audience that he messed up Sympathy every time they played it and sometimes when he got the whole thing right, Robby would give him money or something.  **Fun fact - he never told this story in Buffalo and I've seen Sympathy performed at least 5 times and he's never messed it up.

Well, he isn't best known for remembering lyrics though, is he? xD  Maybe it's something in Buffalo that makes him remember it.

LOL are you insinuating it may be a set-up? I think the same thing sometimes, but I don't care. I fall for it and get a kick out of it every time. Johnny sure knows how to work the crowd.

No, I was just using it as an example of a bet.  When he got it right, he got a payout.

I don't mind slightly scripted stage banter.  John pretty freely admits he's been telling the same jokes/stories for years.  As far as Sympathy is concerned, I think he made a slightly bigger deal out of it than necessary, but I guess exaggerating is more interesting than "Oh, hey I mess this song up every now and then".

And I don't think John's all that bad at remembering lyrics either.  I've heard many many bootlegs and it's actually not all that common for him to mess up.  It's just that when he does flub some lyrics or forget them, he makes a HUGE deal out of it and draws attention to it by stopping the song or encouraging people to take notice before a song even starts.  It's funny and I totally encourage that behavior because a concert isn't about getting all of the words right, but I think it gives him a reputation that's not all that true.  Robby gets lyrics wrong all the time, but he usually just wings it until he picks up the right lyrics again and no one ever even notices.  They could be doing worse - Bono has lyrics on a teleprompter hidden in the monitors.  :D

I think she may have been referring to when he forgot the lyrics to Acoustic #3 last year. Like. Twice. (once, he just forgot the lyrics, cuz he's a dork; the second time, he got a little bit distracted cuz there was a couple in the audience who couldn't keep their hands off each other XD)
I was so mad, cuz they didn't play it at Bushkill, and then I saw two videos of it in between Bushkill and Cleveland, and he messed up the lyrics, and I never saw them finish the song. So when they played it at Cleveland, and Brad played that electric solo..Seriously, you guys, it makes my skin crawl. *shudder*

Well yeah, but not only that. I mean, sure, he doesn't always mess up lyrics, quite on the contrary, but he does more so than what I've seen other singers do. You're probably right, though, he does make a big deal out of it. And I've never noticed that Robby misses them too, so if he's not making a big deal out of it that's probably why.

I agree with you about encouraging his habit of blowing it up. I love the spontaneity (if it's not a set up, that is) of it, it's what makes concerts twice as fun as CD-material. :D

I remember hearing that Jessica Simpson forgot the lyrics at a performance at one of those Kennedy Center tributes. And she started crying and left the stage and wouldn't come back. Now that's professional.

Oh, I know.  The first time I saw U2, it was like a religious experience.  And that's a lot coming from an agnostic like me.  :D

You can't accuse him of relying on the teleprompter much though.  It was up on the main stage and he spent a huge chunk of the show running around the cat walk.
