Title: Goo Goo Dolls attract young fans to Arena / review Post by Shannon on Mar 20th, 2007, 9:05am Tuesday March 20, 2007 REVIEW Goo Goo Dolls attract young fans to Arena By Sarah D'Esti Miller Press & Sun-Bulletin It was a mix of old and new as the Goo Goo Dolls and opening act Augustana played to an enthusiastic crowd Monday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. There were many teens and 20-somethings at this show. Granted, the band Augustana has a hit single, "Boston," which has been making the rounds on lots of TV programs, and the dozens of screaming girls certainly proved they weren't strangers to the band. The Goo Goo Dolls, however are supposedly not a kids' band, even being labeled as "adult contemporary." But you couldn't prove it by me, looking at all of college-age and younger fans, many of them holding up signs. Consider the Goos are in their 40s (drummer Mike Malinin will turn 40 this year) and it's pretty amazing. Perhaps it is because like other acts that attract a wide age range, the Goo Goo Dolls have staying power. The played their earlier hits such as "Name," "Slide," "Broadway" and "Black Balloon." Bassist Robby Takac took over lead vocals for "January Friend" and "Tucked Away," from 2002's "Gutterflower," which are a nod to the band's punk roots. They saw major success in the '90s and they still make hits. "Better Days," "Let Love In," and "Stay With You" are all off their latest album. Lead singer and guitarist Johnny Rzeznik doesn't do a radio reproduction, either, mixing things up just enough to keep it interesting and not frustrating. He was in excellent voice, too, probably because he makes wise vocal decisions, such as having the audience sing the chorus to "Iris," which is kind of on the high side. "Dizzy," "Acoustic #3," "Become," -- Rzeznik worked the crowd with no more than what is in all likelihood one of the most dazzling and infectious smiles in rock 'n' roll, just being a nice guy. The black balloons were bouncing everywhere. The final encore of the night was their cover of Supertramp's "Give A Little Bit," which was yet another hit for them. The Goo Goo Dolls was the second review I ever wrote. The first review was the group 98 Degrees. And there you have it. Although the title conjures up images of the band baiting kids with Gummy Bears and SweetTarts. :P I don't suppose you would have found much age-variation at that 98 Degrees show. I remember the first GGD concert I attended, one of the things that struck me was the various ages of the people in the crowd. |

One thing that always amazes me is the reviewers surprise that young people would be interested in the Goos music. It's almost as if they expect to go to the shows and see people hunched over with canes or something. |
