Title: GGD anxious to play Halifax concert / article Post by Shannon on Nov 6th, 2006, 9:57am Goo Goo Dolls anxious to play Halifax concert By Heather Sawers The Daily News MUSIC - Robby Takac admits his life is far from the partying rockstar lifestyle. He has more than 1,500 Pez dispensers in his collection, and loves a cartoon penguin named Badtz-Maru, and went to bed at 8:30 p.m. last night. "That's pretty rock and roll, right?" laughed Takac, the 42-year-old bassist for the Goo Goo Dolls. The band has been touring since April, promoting their latest album, Let Love In, and is playing the Halifax Metro Centre on Nov. 21. The group hasn't performed in Canada in six years, and this will be their first time in Nova Scotia. "We're very excited, actually. For some reason, we never made it up there," said Takac. "I've seen pictures, and it looks glorious, so I can't wait to see it." Takac founded the Goo Goo Dolls in 1986 with guitarist Johnny Rzeznik, and they hired drummer Mike Malinin in 1995. Over the last two decades, they have released 10 albums - which have included such hit singles as Name, Slide, Iris, Broadway, and Stay With You - and toured all around the world. "We've gone from being a bunch of kids who just wanted to drink beer and play three-chord punk rock to a bunch of guys who want to challenge themselves, record by record," said Takac, who also runs his own label, Good Charamel Records. 'Amazing' "It's a pretty amazing place to be after all this time, I don't think a lot of people get that opportunity." While the group has had many radio hits, their most famous tune is Iris, which was featured on the City of Angels soundtrack in 1998 and held the top position on the Billboard chart for 18 weeks. "It is a pretty enormous shadow to dodge," said Takac. "We may never have a song that big, and if that's the only song some people know by us, I'm more than happy to be that band that comes out there and plays Iris for them." Besides Iris, you can expect to hear 22 or 23 other songs at their Halifax show - a mixture of old and new material so everyone gets to hear their favourites. Takac likes when they play their 1998 hit, Slide. "A lot of people know it," said Takac. "You see a lot of people smile, and it feels good." Don't be surprised if you see Takac walk onto the stage barefoot at the Metro Centre - it's his trademark. It's sort of become force of habit, if you will," said Takac. "I play bass, and I like to feel the stage rattle." Takac says the secret to the band's double-decade success might be due to the way they do their own thing, ignoring what's hip and cool at that moment. "As long as we feel like we're still making relevant records, and as long as we feel there's still somebody out there who cares about it, then I think we'll keep moving forward." huh? I can't figure out if writer is paraphrasing Robby or if the writer is making that assumption on his own. If it's the former choice, then it is clearly an indication of how far the NYS school system has come.
