Stuck in Goo

Drummer Vikram Sehgal cant get enough of the Goo Goo Dolls

Sharin Bhatti

It comes as quite a shock to those whove just seen me on stage. Most people whove heard me have this image of me listening to heavy and hard rock or punk at the most. Being a drummer, I guess that is the usual youd expect me to be...loud and chaotic. But what made me a musician were the three cocky-eyed nerds of the Goo Goo Dolls. They have a quintessential acoustic tune, the country tinged Sympathy that sounds earthy and raw. Unplugged and melodious, the Goo Goo Dolls are one band that bring the rebellion mode of punk and grunge into their acoustic harmonies as well. They have evolved with their sound over the many albums they have produced transitioning from stiff-upper-liiped British grunge to acoustic to the very alternative eccentricities of vaguness. But with their album Gutterflower, their sound bloomed. The album is downright raucous, jaunty punk yet with a tinge of soulful melody. Goo Goo Dolls rock and their music is stained more by inspiration rather than perspiration. The singles from the album, Here Is Gone, combines subtle acoustics and a moody atmospheric vibe to convey what appears to be a deeply personal tale revolving around the complexities of modern relationships and with the following song Big Machine - the very ballsy, powerful modern rock becomes even more evitable. Theres magic in the vocal and instrumental arrangements of their music and who can forget their poetic, melancholic ballad Iris; which broke hearts, but instilled hope. The mellow bass and the dramatic notes of the violin did nothing but enumerate just why you cant help falling in love with them.

I know! I've been so busy at home now that my kids are almost back to school...it's almost been chaotic. So I haven't had as much time to sort through all the articles and alerts. And, by the time I do Triest has beat me to it....Thanks Triest....you always have my back.
