Title: Random Goo, Goo Maybe doing TV SPECIAL Post by TruexBlue on Aug 16th, 2006, 9:37am Going for the throat Rawking rassler Chris Jericho tunes up for TV's Celebrity Duets By PAT ST. GERMAIN Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla Chris Jericho is suiting up for the tag-team musical match-up Celebrity Duets, premiering with a two-hour special on Fox and City TV Aug. 29. The 35-year-old rawker and former pro wrestler is among eight celebs who'll partner with pro singers, including Dionne Warwick, Clint Black, Peter Frampton and Smokey Robinson, for live performance rounds starting Sept. 7. "I'm excited because I'm such a huge fan of music to begin with ... and to get a chance to sing with some of the most legendary singers of all time," the Winnipegger said yesterday from L.A. Jericho, whose real name is Chris Irvine -- he's the son of hockey star Ted Irvine -- has a musical background. He's been playing bass in bands since he was 12 and has three albums under his belt as frontman of hard-rocking outfit Fozzy. Sure, he's not nearly as famous for singing as he is for his swinging choke drop as a WWE superstar. And his springboard dropkick isn't likely to score points against his opponents. Not that Jericho has spent much energy sizing up Xena: Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy's social adviser and Broadway veteran Jai Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, Hal Sparks (Queer as Folk), Lea Thompson (Caroline in the City), Alfonsi Ribeiro (Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) and Olympic gymnast Carly Patterson. "For me I'm not worried about the competition, I just worry about myself and whatever I do best." And, vocally, what he does best is rock. Jericho doesn't yet know who his partners will be. The celebs will sing with someone new each week -- and he's heard guests like Christina Aguilera and Goo Goo Dolls could be onboard, along with Michael Bolton, Belinda Carlisle, Macy Gray and Patti LaBelle. David Foster, whose aborted reality show Princes of Malibu aired on Fox, will be a judge, and singer-comic Wayne Brady hosts the show. Jericho came to the project after he worked on a USA Network pilot called Ebaum's World this spring. That show wasn't picked up, but producer Holly Jacobs called Jericho when Celebrity Duets came up and urged him to give it a shot. He spent a few hours in a studio recording two demo songs -- he chose Metallica's Enter Sandman, and the producers asked him to sing Blood, Sweat & Tears' Spinning Wheel -- and within 24 hours, he learned the songs had been approved by executive producer Simon Cowell in England. Now he's ready to show the world at large what he can do. "They don't want this to be a funny thing. They want this to be a great show with great performances," he says. "It's going to expose me to a whole new segment of people who don't know who I am." In case you didn't know, Jericho has spent most of the past year since he stopped wrestling in L.A., studying acting and starring in Sci-Fi Network movie Android Apocalypse, along with fellow Manitoban Scott Bairstow (whose legal troubles over an alleged sexual tryst with a minor have kept him out of the spotlight for the past few years). Jericho also performs with The Groundlings comedy troupe and spent July on stage in Toronto, starring in Norm Foster's play Opening Night. And he's working on a memoir for Warner Books that should be on shelves in time for Christmas 2007. Celebrity Duets will follow the same format as ABC's Dancing with the Stars and Fox's American Idol. The celebs will perform on Thursdays starting Sept. 7, with the first live elimination Sept. 8. The winner gets $100,000 for charity. Father-of-three Jericho says he hasn't picked a recipient, but a children's charity is a likely choice.
