SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The Goo Goo Dolls took the stage at Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Monday night and did exactly what they were expected to do: they rocked the place.

The Counting Crows rocked too. But mostly, the Crows strummed their way through their 90-minute set, much of which featured surprise folk-washed acoustic versions of "Mr. Jones" and other well-known Crows tunes.

It was more than surprising.

It was stellar.

The Goos and the Crows mixed the hits with enough new music to keep it interesting and make their sets more than a mere look back to the past. But while the Goo Goo Dolls stayed true to their rock roots, the Crows' music took on a folky, country feel that suited the songs and the band.

Close to 10,000 alt-rock fans, many of them female twenty-somethings and thirtysomethings, cheered, screamed and sang along with Goos singer Johnny Rzeznik and Crows lead voice Adam Duritz in what turned out to be one of the best shows of the summer season.

Duritz, barefoot and wearing his hair in a huge braided knot atop his head, was genuinely excited to be on stage on Monday night, talking quickly between songs and greeting fans with news that the show would be a mostly acoustic set. "I know this is a weird show," he explained, "but it's exactly what I want to sing tonight.

He proceeded to lead the band through recently reworked readings of "Angels of the Silences," "Four Days," "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" and an accordion-laced rendition of "Mr. Jones" that was as amazing as it was unrecognizable.

Duritz's voice was amazing, soaring on "A Long December," "Friend of the Devil," the intense "Round Here" and a heartfelt version of "A Long December." The Crows were impressive on Monday night.

The Goo Goo Dolls embraced the SPAC crowd from the start, pounding out an hour and 20 minutes worth of their melodic power pop, including a nice sampling of songs from their latest album, "Let Love In."

Augmented by a pair of hired guitarists, the Goos were plenty loose, playing with the bravado of a bar band as they tore through new songs such as "Stay With You," "We'll Be Here, "Let Love In" and an encore version of "Give A Little Bit."

Rzeznik felt the love from the SPAC crowd from the start, greeting fans with arms wide open. Fans sang along with Rzeznik on "Slide," "Name," "Black Balloon" and "Broadway," eagerly obliging the singer when he asked them to sing the end of "Iris" as loud as they could to "wake all their rich neighbors."
