With the Crows, count on the unexpected

goo excerpt...

Subverting expectations is not something the Goo Goo Dolls value. Rather, their songs play out like romantic movies, the kind where the male lead comes to his senses in the final moments and shows up rain-soaked on his lover's stoop with a bouquet of roses and says something like, "when everything's made to be broken, I just want you to know who I am." Their brisk set put melody and sincerity on the express train, delivering big soaring hits that were open-armed and paper-thin. Johnny Rzeznik is a fetching front man and he returns so often to the theme of love's transformative power that it's hard to doubt his belief in it. But their co-headlining set was ultimately weightless, perhaps an indication that, when choosing between the good-looking romantic and the self-obsessed poet, consider at least that the latter has the capacity to surprise.

COUNTING CROWS AND GOO GOO DOLLS. Will it be the poet, or the class president? Seen Thursday at Jones Beach.
