Title: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by Shannon on Aug 2nd, 2006, 1:04pm http://www.topix.net/content/trb/1638292153166865886502402548522596139701 Buffalo boys come home Newsday.com BY RAFER GUZMÁN August 02, 2006 Los Angeles is nothing but illusions.... I had to kind of adapt to the environment in Buffalo again. And I was real happy to do that. I felt reconnected to the plot of what my band's all about. How many rock stars would leave their adopted hometown of sunny Los Angeles to work on an album in Buffalo - in December? At least three: singer Johnny Rzeznik, bassist Robby Takac and drummer Mike Malinin of the Goo Goo Dolls, a band whose roots are in that upstate city famous for its bone-chilling winters. Rzeznik explains why he recorded the group's latest album, 'Let Love In,' by citing the unofficial motto of Buffalo: 'The City of No Illusions.' By contrast, he says, 'Los Angeles is nothing but illusions.... I had to kind of adapt to the environment in Buffalo again. And I was real happy to do that. I felt reconnected to the plot of what my band's all about.' 'Let Love In' (Warner Bros.) is a comeback of sorts from a group that hasn't been in the spotlight in a major way since racking up mainstream rock hits such as 'Name,' 'Iris' and 'Slide' in the mid-to-late 1990s. Though the Goo Goo Dolls released a live CD/DVD package in 2004, their last album, 'Gutterflower,' came out four years ago. Now they're back with an uptempo new single, 'Stay With You,' that Rzeznik hopes will make a few converts. 'We catch a lot of -- from critics,' Rzeznik says, speaking by phone from a hotel room in Harrisburg, Pa., last Friday. 'I like writing songs. You may not like them, but I'm writing them.' During a half-hour conversation, Rzeznik comes across as down-to-earth and self-deprecating, but also something of a loner who likes to walk his own path. He says he moved to L.A. to escape the memories of a broken marriage but didn't make many friends. He did a stint as a producer on 'a cheesy pop record' (Ryan Cabrera's 2004 debut on Atlantic) and now regrets it. 'I can't believe I did it,' Rzeznik says, groaning. 'There's writers who refuse to even mention my name anymore because I worked with him. I'm like, 'Great.'' In December 2004, Rzeznik packed up a U-Haul with his recording equipment and drove with a friend across country to Buffalo. He and his band mates set up shop in a Masonic hall - 'about 100 years old, totally full of ghosts, freezing cold' - that also had great acoustics. There they wrote songs and recorded some of the basic tracks for the new disc, which was eventually produced by Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette, the Corrs). Rzeznik says he wasn't treated like a hometown hero in Buffalo, and he liked that. In fact, the Goo Goo Dolls will likely record their next album there. 'Like I said, there's no illusions in Buffalo,' Rzeznik says. 'People are just like, 'Hey, what's up,' and that's about it. I mean, they're over us already.' WHERE & WHEN The Goo Goo Dolls play with Counting Crows at 7 tonight and tomorrow at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, Wantagh. Tickets are $29.50-$49.50. Call 631-888-9000 or go to ticketmaster.com. Poor Ryan. I'm quite surprised to see John say that. That's pretty rude. It's one thing to think it but to say it out loud in an interview. |

Title: Re: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by the red o on Aug 2nd, 2006, 1:54pm I think it's really really shitty. Ryan idolizes him and John praised him back when the album came out. Take It All Away sold well and was well received by critics. And why does he care if 'some writer' won't mention his name? Whatever happened to "you've gotta believe that what other people think doesn't matter"? You know how John always said that the popstar boybanders were always so nice and the rockstars were assholes? Congrats, John, you're a real rockstar now. |

Title: Re: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by the fuchsia o on Aug 2nd, 2006, 3:44pm It's funny how he so quickly goes from saying that his band gets shit from critics to doing exactly that to Ryan; and in poor form -- the critics are doing their job, while he's just saying it for the hell of it. Hey John, maybe said writers won't speak your name anymore because YOUR work has become mediocre, not because you did a nice thing for a young artist that idolized you. :-/ Then again, if he's wanting to work with writers who are that close-minded; I don't want to hear whatever they'd come up with anyway. (...and I don't even LIKE Ryan Cabrera!) *edited because I always use about 50 times more parentheses than is necessary. |

Title: Re: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by Iris74 on Aug 2nd, 2006, 4:27pm I don't know where John's head has been. He's been awfully negative lately. :dunno: I NEVER thought I'd read something where a member of the Goos says something that negative about another artist. That's not their style. |

Title: Re: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by Shannon on Aug 2nd, 2006, 6:39pm I remember that video clip. They looked like they had so much fun working together. I really hope Ryan never sees this article. I never bought Ryan's album that John helped produce but I always liked what I heard. I think Ryan is ALOT more respectable of a pop artist than alot of the crap that's out there. Screw any of the writers that won't work with John because of it. And, shame on John for being proud one minute and then saying he's not because of others' opinions. There's a HUGE part of me that hopes John was misquoted or taken out of context but I just don't think so :shakehead: |

Title: Re: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by TruexBlue on Aug 2nd, 2006, 10:40pm hey guys... i think the red o said it best "You know how John always said that the popstar boybanders were always so nice and the rockstars were assholes? Congrats, John, you're a real rockstar now." it shouldn't matter what other people think of you, you should always stay true and be rockin on to who you are...if other people dont like it fuck em...theres always going to be people who do and dont like you for one reason or another..... ALSO the vid wont load for me...its slow and really flawy.... any ideas? hence why this is my saying and why i always remind you guys to... STAY TRUE & ROCK ON! Triest :jammin: |

Title: STAY TRUE & ROCK ON! Post by TruexBlue on Aug 3rd, 2006, 12:35pm Well....I don't know the guy, I've never met the guy, nor should we really pry ourselves too much into this (whatever rocks ones world, ya know)...but its sad because that's one of the reasons I always liked and respected John so much (well all of them) he just did his thing and didn't care what other people thought...or at least that's what he always has been known to say and I had no reason to believe otherwise...I mean isn't this the same guy who said even though "Gutterflower" didn't sell a lot its an album I , we needed to write, as well as "Let Love In" too...not for record sales, but for us? I mean we could go round and round in circles because no one knows what's going on in his head all the time not his girlfriend and not even John himself...hence we can tell this from his writing...for all we know John could have had a bad day...or it could have been more of his sarcastic I don't give fu** remarks that were taken out of context....that we all know he's famous for...like the smiling/finger quote...and even the rock star quote..... or maybe he knew exactly what he was saying and he's evolved into this whole new person...liked it at the time now regrets it...maybe he regreted the quote right after he said it....Ryan could have said or done something nasty (I mean I haven't seen any articles on here where he praises John or even gives him credit for that matter)...maybe John was this person the whole time and just hid behind some persona...but it doesn't matter what matters is this... Do you like the Goo Goo Dolls music? (say yes because you wouldn't be here otherwise, hehe)...we ENJOY AND LOVE listening to the GOOS, going to GOO concerts, and meeting up with other GOO fans and having a blast!!!! and DONT FORGET that!!!! .....and don't forget to.... STAY TRUE & ROCK ON! Triest p.s. Shannon your a D:-*LL (no pun intended) I heart you too!!! :jammin: |

Title: Re: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by LadyGoodiva on Aug 3rd, 2006, 1:40pm Well, the RC fans are talking about it on their board too. http://boards.atlanticrecords.com/artists/ryancabrera/forums/a/tpc/f/5541092/m/9161023256/p/1 |

Title: Re: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by Shannon on Aug 3rd, 2006, 1:45pm I knew it wouldn't be long before other's got wind of it. I'll always be a fan no matter what. Like Triest said the music draws me. John is not perfect nor do I expect him to ever be. However, it doesn't excuse public comments like that either. I know he often speaks off the cuff ... and usually we love him for that. But this was just too much. |

Title: Re: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by wysteria66 on Aug 3rd, 2006, 1:46pm Thanks for posting the article. I found this to be interesting as to what JR had to say. Was glad to hear that they are possibly going back to Buffalo to record the next record though. |
||
Title: Re: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by Shannon on Aug 3rd, 2006, 1:50pm I agree wysteria66. In all our shock about John's comment we forgot to talk about the best part of this article...the fact that they will likely record their next album there. There will be a next album...YAY!!! |
||
Title: Re: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by tripper on Aug 5th, 2006, 7:57pm I think John's pissed at Ryan because he finally found the spot on his persian rug where Ryan spilled his wine. (Remember that interview that Ryan did and mentioned this) Tripper |

Title: Re: Newsday.com:Buffalo boys come home Post by iris3732 on Aug 6th, 2006, 9:13am I really hope it was taken out of context, too. But if it wasn't....I mean, sometimes people have bad days. Even if that's how John really feels, he should have filtered it for the interview. I'd hate to be Ryan and read that. |
