Title: The red "o"? Post by Pon on Jul 28th, 2006, 11:16pm I notice in the title "goo goo dolls", the last "o" in "goo" is red. Is there any special meaning in it? Is there something I don't know...hehe. Can somebody crack the code? Or was it like "let's just make it red"? haha. |

Title: Re: The red "o"? Post by collegegoofan on Jul 28th, 2006, 11:49pm if you look on the cover of the new cd --Let Love In ---- Goo Goo Dolls is in white except for the second o in the second goo so on your cover it would be something like this The Goo Goo Dolls and all the other letters are white.... if that makes any sense...if you have the let love in cd you will probably get a better idea of what I mean and I think the person who made the banner was using that as a model. just my thoughts though, Shannon |

Title: Re: The red "o"? Post by Pon on Jul 29th, 2006, 12:37am I'm not talking about the banner, i'm talking about the CD cover itself. It seems to be the new layout for their trailer and advertisements or whatever. on 07/28/06 at 23:49:30, collegegoofan wrote:

Title: Re: The red "o"? Post by Shannon on Jul 29th, 2006, 10:25am I have no idea why they did it but I like it. I'm sure after 20 years of trying to be creative with the logo it gets challenging. But I really like this new one. Are you an IM member? That would be a great question to ask. If you're not I could ask it for you. |

Title: Re: The red "o"? Post by Pon on Jul 30th, 2006, 12:08am You could ask them...it's a fun question to me..hehe. To me, I feel that in their early years, their name logo had holes in it cuz it means "sex maggots". Like a bunch of maggots ate holes through the name. That's what I thought? Also, not sure, but I think they were "goo goo dolls" before, then after they became big, they became "The goo goo dolls", solidifying who they are. on 07/29/06 at 10:25:19, Shannon wrote:

Title: Re: The red "o"? Post by dizzilyblue on Jul 30th, 2006, 11:40am As a graphic design student, this is a fairly common typographic (anything that relates to words/letters) element. It's just for visual interest, as having all the letters white would appear very flat, especially next to a grayscale photo. A tiny bit of red then just adds a punch of color, and they chose to make one of the letters red, although they could have just as easily put the text inside a colored box or something. But this is just my perspective. ~ Amanda |

Title: Re: The red "o"? Post by Pondering My Fate on Jul 31st, 2006, 2:14pm I'm an art dork too, but I still don't get the red O thing. I totally get that they'd add some color for interest (and having the title written that way looks good!) or that they'd do it to "balance" the image, but I just don't see how it's supposed to work there. It just seems like a pretty random part to accentuate, IMO. But it all comes down to personal opinion as to whether or not you like it, I guess. In any case I'd say they just did it for the visual effect and not because of any meaning or other. But while we're on the subject -- wasn't there a shirt from back in the DUTG era that had a red O on it too? I can't seem to find a picture of it now, but I just thought of it and now it's gonna drive me nuts because it seems like something that's too weird to be coincidental, haha. :P |

Totally agree with you there. I'm a Graphic Designer as well. Just graduated this year...and still unfortunately, looking for a job. There is nothing where I am.... Anyways, yes, very visually interesting and it makes it really stand out. I actually like how simple they went on their design and used Helvetica, out of the thousands of fonts they could choose from. I actually like the simple sans serif fonts. |

Title: Re: The red "o"? Post by DWG on Jul 31st, 2006, 9:27pm The red o reminds me of Overstock.com and that woman with the white everything in those overstock.com commercials. She needs some red in her world. ::) My bad. Sorry. |

Title: Re: The red "o"? Post by Pon on Jul 31st, 2006, 11:01pm haha..that's pretty funny. anyways, U guys notice from the "Dizzy up the girl" album cover. Their name as well as the album title was fuzzy....obviously representing "dizzy". I think the guys tend to have something behind their name. Maybe not in this case? Still, I think it really looks nice. I remember watching the trailer and as "goo goo dolls fade", the "o" and "let love in" stayed in longer. Even if it means nothing, still looks really cool. on 07/31/06 at 21:27:33, DWG wrote:

Title: Re: The red "o"? Post by the red o on Aug 2nd, 2006, 12:02pm My theory: The art people had a lovely black and white cover all planned out. They also had a list of all the songs the Goos had written. However, the person who wrote out the titles of the songs was slightly dyslexic and instead of "Out of the Red" wrote "the Red Out of". The office was a mess and there were papers everywhere and the artist looked over and saw "The Red O" because the rest was covered with papers. They took it as a sign that the cover was missing something, and so the red o was born. Yeah, that's what I think really happened. |

Title: Re: The red "o"? Post by Shaun on Aug 2nd, 2006, 2:19pm My theory, the guys decided this time around they would unleash Robby and his colouring crayons onto the new album cover. Unfortunately as Robby wrote out the title, to his horror his crayon snapped! Leaveing him only with a red colourng crayon. He'd also for some bizzare reason left the last O until last along with Let love in, hence why its in red. |

There's o-range written all over you. One of us, one of us... I get what's being said about it being eye catching, but to me it isn't really all that eye catching. I just think "Who are the Goo Go Dolls?" |

Dude, with the new record and new comments from the Goos I wouldn't even be surprised if it were found out that the current collection of band members were evil clones. |

Title: Re: The red "o"? Post by blessed_by_goo on Aug 3rd, 2006, 1:41am I didn't read this whole thread.... but I'm thinking the band has kind of a trend setting pattern for being random and in a twisted sort of fashion. The name Goo Goo dolls itself just being a hoot of a thing in a moment that stuck..... The name of the song Iris...... Some of the pics over at IM's moblog.... RANDOM..... I think it's just another add to being random and creative in a catching creative way to make everyone say WHY???...... As far as advertising..... this was very smart, whether or not it was planned that way remains to be heard ....just my thoughts :-/ |
