You need not squash it. Screaming and flailing while dumping half a can of bug poison on it works just fine.
I went into an enclosed butterfly exhibit a week and a half ago and there were butterflies all around me. I had to resist the urges to swat them away. One the size of my hand flew right into the side of my head.
