Concert Review: Goo Goo Dolls, Copeland stay down to earth at Twin River

Kathleen McKiernan

The Goo Goo Dolls showed off their amazing talent as they performed to the filled auditorium at Twin River in Lincoln, R.I. Friday night. The show was everything a show should be, and an honest portrayal of a band that loves music and its fans.

Copeland, the opening band, set the mood with its Augustana-like ballads. Commonly at concerts, you expect an OK opener, not one that really impresses you. You just accept them and hope time will go by fast until the lead band performs.

However, Copeland was different. The band captivated the audience, making the show seem as if it was the headliner and the hundreds of fans were there to see it.

Specifically, "Control Freak" sucked in the audience, never letting it go from the beat, the lyrics and the meaning. With Copeland, you get a downtrodden feeling that comes when you realize a band has finished playing, when you realize that it may be long before you see them again, and that you have to go back to reality.

By far from all the shows I have been to, Copeland has been the best opener; it has true potential and plays real music. It will not be long before bands are opening for Copeland.

After Copeland readied the audience so well, the much anticipated Goo Goo Dolls arrived on stage. From the onset of the show, the Goo Goo Dolls played with passion and appreciation for its fans. Since they have been in the mainstream music scene since 1986, I would hope they love it.

Guitarist and vocalist Johnny Rzeznik, bassist and backup vocalist Robby Takac, and drummer and percussionist Mike Malinin make up a band that is as honest as they come.

Rzeznik sincerely thanked two fans, one who held up an appreciation sign and another who gave him a card. Rzeznik showed his down to earth side when singing "Iris." The stage lights went off and he admitted to missing a cord. Comically, Rzeznik dedicated one song to Alec Baldwin's daughter.

Despite the mishap during "Iris," the lighting also made the show that much stronger. It completed the peaceful, dreamy, loving-life feel of the show, as it brightened the stage with different colors at perfect points in songs.

The Buffalo, N.Y. band played all its songs off Let Love In, as well as the songs it is most recognized and cherished for, including "Slide," "Here is Gone" and "Give a Little Bit."

The show was so well performed and the interaction with the audience was so genuine that it was nothing but sad when the show came to an end. You know a concert is spectacularly performed when you are riveted to the band and the music. All you can think about, all you can feel, is the music. It overtakes you and delivers you to another world.

The Goo Goo Dolls show at Twin River did just that and more. While I was watching the show, I knew that the Goo Goo Dolls were a true band that loves music for the art of music, not for the money. Rzeznik's lyrics are from the heart, and not the band's wallets. The Goo Goo Dolls really let love in during the show at Twin River.
