Dolls still rockin' Band's popular tunes break barriers By Kristi Singer - For The Sun News They break many barriers with their music. They're the Goo Goo Dolls, and they've been doing it since their inception in 1986. From pop charts to pop-rock to rock radio, the Goo Goo Dolls have been a music-lover's favorite with radio hits like "Name," "Iris," "Slide" and "Here Is Gone." In fact, the Dolls currently hold the record for "Most Top 10 Hits at Hot AC Radio in History," with their 12 radio staples. The Goo Goo Dolls (singer/guitarist John Rzeznik, bassist/vocalist Robby Takac and drummer Mike Malinin) will make a stop at the House of Blues on Tuesday in support of their most recent release, the gold-certified album, "Let Love In." Kicks! caught up with Goo Goo Dolls' Robby Takac for an animated phone interview from Los Angeles: Question | So where are you today, Robby? Answer | I'm in Los Angeles at the moment. I live between Los Angeles and a little broom closet in a recording studio Johnny and I are working on in Buffalo. I've been spending a lot of time back there. In September/October, we're talking about starting up our new record in the studio we're building. Q. | Wow, lots of stuff going on with you guys. A. | Always, always - you wouldn't believe it. Q. | Tell me more about this Goo Goo studio. A. | Back in the '80s, when John and I began first playing together, I was an intern at a little recording studio in Buffalo, which was built by this really famous guy named John Stork. He built Jimi Hendrix's studio and Bear Tracks up in Woodstock, N.Y., - really famous places back in the '70s, '80s. I was an intern there. We did our first couple of records there and left to pursue Goo Goo Doll-dom, whatever it is that we've been doing here for the past 15 to 18 years since we left there. Just recently I acquired this space again through an odd series of events. I was back in the space, and we spent about six months in the record cycle writing in Buffalo and really seemed to enjoy the freedom from the rest of our life that occurs here in Los Angeles. All that going away and spending time just focused on making music seemed to be a pretty cool thing. So, we took advantage of the fact that we had the space and brought John Stork back 30 years later after he had built it and had him come and do a redesign. We're going to install our studio gear and start to work on our next album in our hometown, which we haven't done in an awful long time. So, it's a big full circle and we're pretty excited about it. Q. | That's awesome. A. | I know - it's an interesting story. We started there when we were just little rats, and now we're rebuilding the place. I like to tell it. Q. | Definitely. The "dream" came true. A. | Well, parts of it. The dream involved a castle and a Rolls Royce, but none of that happened. But that's all right. I'm happily married - that was in the dream. I've seen a lot of the world - that was in the dream. So, lots of the dream came true. But, the castle in France didn't happen. I was a little bummed about that. But anyway, I'm thankful for what I got - a studio in Buffalo. Q. | How do you feel about having your own recording space, versus recording in other studios like you have over the years? A. | I'm going to enjoy not having to buy more equipment for other people, which is what I've been doing for 20 years. Now we buy more equipment for us, which is a cool thing, to be able to perpetuate what we do. Q. | Back to your next album - I always like to look ahead. Can you tell me any more of those plans? A. | The studio's built, we're on tour now, and we're doing our best to keep our minds on that but at the same time prepare ourselves for the next inevitable step of this - which is to start gathering some ideas together. One of the things we're trying to do this time is as we're coming up with ideas, use those ideas for the record as opposed to doing what we used to do - which was set up a couple of microphones and do demos. I don't know if we're going to 'do demos.' I think we're going to write songs for this record and record them. We've never really done that before. We've always done seven versions of every song before we hit the studio. This one, we're going to try from the very beginning to have recordings that are good enough to be representative of what we want to do in here as a whole from the beginning. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------- Goo Goo Dolls with Copeland When | 9 p.m. Tuesday. Doors open at 8 p.m. Where | House of Blues, Barefoot Landing, U.S. 17 S., North Myrtle Beach How much | $35 in advance, $37.50 day of show Details | USA Harvest will have collection containers at the venue. Concertgoers are asked to bring canned foods/goods that will be distributed to area families. 272-3000 or visit www.hob.com http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/113/story/44603.html

It does. And they keep talking about this album they plan to start in the fall. If they actually do it and take very little time off that will be awesome for us fans who are used to waiting 2+ years between albums.

It would be so great to have new goo material so soon instead of waiting for what seems like forever!
